Iron Wolf, an apparent codename for the next game in the Call of Duty series, has been allegedly leaked over Xbox Live.

The game is rumoured to be currently in development at Treyarch, which suggests it could be the 2012 entry to the series.

The leak came after an Xbox forum post went live yesterday, together with alleged screen shots of someone at Treyarch playing the game over Xbox Live.

You can check out the forum post and alleged images here.

The jury is still out on this one, as it seems unlikely that Treyarch would openly test the game on a retail Xbox console, and in public no less.

However, the codename Iron Wolf does fit into both the Call of Duty canon, and the Black Ops timeline.

Iron Wolf is a Lithuanian special ops unit that was formed in 1991, after the decline of the Soviet empire. The events leading up to the unit's formation were triggered by the cold war, an era that featured prominently in Black Ops.

This suggests that the alleged game will focus on the downfall of Soviet Russia between the end of Black Ops in 1963, all the way through the Nixon and Reagan presidencies and the final years of the Vietnam conflict.

I'll need more info before I believe this.

Does a codename really matter? It's not like a new Call of Duty is a secret.

Haha exactly. I think they should just go ahead and give the names and dates for the next 5 cod's, assuming the game makes it that far. This series will be the next Tony hawk or guitar hero.

I don't mind them teasing.

I actually think this series is safe from becoming the next Tony Hawk or Guitar Hero. Skateboarding for a long while. People love their FPS games.

CoD won't be the next Tony Hawk for at least another 5 or 6 years. Too many people just love shooting people online. But more and more people are starting to "hate" CoD. So it might be shorter than expected. Regardless, I hope each and every installment that they do something revolutionary. Black Ops was pretty close with a story that I really loved. It was goofy and weird, but it was a mystery all the way through and completely entertaining. Something CoD needs again.

Why can't CoD just die? I don't know how the first few CoD games were, but the previous few literally seem the same to me. Like those awful sports games (Fifa--, etc) that have hardly any change except for a new team kit, etc.

One of the main things that stopped me from getting a CoD game is the fact that they are very short, and the second that the new one comes out, nobody's going to be online on the previous one.

Seems like a waste of money to me.

Because each one sells millions upon millions of copies. You don't kill your golden goose.

If you want to take a reductionist approach and look at everything at the surface level, you can make those exact same allegations against damn near any video game franchise. Call of Duty is no more "the same" than Zelda games are. Or Final Fantasy. Or Halo. Or Tekken. Or whatever.

The only difference with Call of Duty is that it's super ****ing popular. And we all know how cool it is to hate things that are popular.

I think anything over ten hours is probably too long for the vast majority of shooters, but whatever, that comes down to taste and you made a fair point.

and the second that the new one comes out, nobody's going to be online on the previous one.

Simply not true. Unless Activision has shut the servers down, there are still people playing Call of Duty 1 and 2.

I actually jumped online in CoD 2 not too long ago and was surprised how quickly the match filled up

For those games that basically do what Call Of Duty does, putting out an almost interchangable game on a 7-12 month basis, Why wouldn't you? I criticize games all the time for being too similar, even from developers I like. Valve Dice It seems fair game. Because a core set of gamers might want "more of the same" doesn't mean I necessarily should. Or at the very least expect even a teensy weensy little bit of innovation.

The other thing as well that people don't seem to be touching on the price point. I really have no idea what the price is in the US but here in the UK, the game is sitting at £10 more than the average price of a game. With (what was in Black Op's) a 6 hour single player. With basically, nothing new and a bunch of map packs at £15 pop a bang. Being the golden goose, whatever Activision want to pull (and get away with, which they will, forever) others will follow. Because the gaming industry seems to be mostly run by opportunistic *****bags who have no real love for the crap they are putting out. Eventually games will be sold in a Mcdonalds bag. Hell man, they have already reached the point they are on a Mcdonalds carton. Capitalism ho!

Eh the games industry is fine. There are plenty of fantastic titles out there.

Just make a full game out of Zombies mode. That's the only reason people play WaW and BLOPS anyway. :p

Zombies is popular but MP is more popular.
