It's pushing the idea that you can keep recycling the same game with some tweaks and make a ton of money. It increases profit but reduces developers desire to push the boundries of creativity.
YES, EXACTLY. The money behind the developers want that same success, so naturally they want studios to clone the idea. It stifles creativity because no one is actually forced to develop something new and interesting to make a profit...they can just step in line like the other clones instead and make the cash. The consumer is the one that loses.
None of the others have really emulated that crazy level of multiplayer success & long term loyalty very well though. Battlefield is a different proposition and not following the CoD formula (& benefiting from not doing so). Halo is making significant improvements with main numbered games. What other multiplayer shooters are played consistently on consoles by a big community?
