Sam Mendes WWI drama ‘1917’

I'm glad to see this movie get so many tepid, mildly positive reviews. Can't wait! :woo:

I cant believe they didnt release this Thanksgiving weekend. It's going to get buried by star wars's hype and press onslaught.
Frozen is gonna take everything to school this weekend again anyway, hence why nothing that requires a huge budget was released this week.

One movie doesn’t dominate all if people are also interested in other things. Two even three things can be big.

Avatar dominated but Sherlock Holmes and Alvin and the Chipmunks did extremely well.

Star Wars was huge. And so was Jumanji.

Frozen II is killing it. But Knives Out just had a big Wednesday.

Sherlock and Alvin have long established brand recognition and nostalgia. Jumanji does as well. Sherlock had RDJ and Jude Law and McAdams. Jumanji had the Rock.

This film has no brand recognition, or even a catchy title, and the leads are not big well known actors. The supporting cast are quality actors that are better known than the leads, but they arent on RDJ and the Rock's pop culture level.

What was the budget of this film?

Oh yeah I forgot about Frozen.

It probably wont do well in the states because it's a war film that doesn't have any Americans, but overseas it'll make its money.

How did Dunkirk do here?

$188M... but Mendes doesn't have a cult following like Nolan and it's not being released in the summer.

Was I the only one who kept getting bombarded with the trailer ad for this on Youtube for months?

RT is getting weirder...First top critict with a negative review...at his score is a B-

Since when a B- is negative rating?

Double Toasted gave it a perfect score.

Me and my girl just got out of it before we hit this new year's eve party I don't want to go to. The cinematography is excellent and it gets pretty horror movie at times the way it's set up. The one subversion I didn't expect was
Blake dying like halfway in.

That spoiler doesn’t surprise me. I noticed even in the previews a suspicious number of scenes where
George MacKay seems to be by himself

This film pretty much deserves all the awards at this point, besides the female performer categories of course.

ANd that's why I don't watch previews anymore really

Saw this a couple hours ago. I thought it was really good. Of course the cinematography was crazy nice. George McKay I thought was really good. I'd give him a nod, but I doubt he'd get it.

Don't really have any flaws in it except that sometimes it was a bit hard to understand what they were saying. But that could've been the accents.

Will be picking this up on Blu Ray and watching again

Heading off to see this for my ‘birthday’ watch on 22nd Jan, really looking forward to it, was very impressed by the trailer.

Here’s to more WWI movies!

The last one was what? War Horse? (Wonder Woman not counting for obvious reasons).
