Scream 5 in Development

Mathew Lillard is a pretty underrated actor IMO and I'd love to see him return to this franchise along with Neve Campbell. There is so much potential there for some cool, unresolved drama/tension between Stu and Sidney to watch unfold after all these years if that's the direction they're going in.

It wouldn’t.

How so?

That in 3 sequels Sidney never once mentioned about Stu being in jail when the murders start again? That would be the first person they'd talk to.

I get it. He's "dead" in 2-4. They can retcon it anyway they want with this one. But then we're getting into some Star Wars sequel trilogy, the Emperor is actually still alive, territory.

I don't expect Stu to return but i wouldn't be opposed to it.

I wouldn't be opposed to Stu returning, but it would be kind of random and hokey.

Exactly.

Scream 3 would stand out the most when the new Ghostface was claiming to have killed Maureen. Detective Kincaid was bending over backwards to talk to Sidney about it, when Stu who was directly involved in Maureen's murder is supposedly alive, and they never thought to question him?

What a load of rubbish. I hope Stu stays dead.

I dunno...I guess I don't take the mythology that seriously. It's still a slasher franchise at the end of the day and by nature it has to deal with slasher tropes even if it's poking fun at the same time. I think seeing Matthew Lillard back could be a lot of fun if they executed it well.

They could play it off like he was comatose for years after the first film but at some point he finally woke up, just as one example for how they could handwave his absence.

But regardless it's just a tweet and it could just be Mathew having some fun with nothing behind it.

I don’t hold Scream 3 in high enough regard to say they can’t bring Stu back because it would create a plot hole situation.

If the first film had ended with a definitive “Well, they’re BOTH dead!” then sure, don’t go there. But 3? **** 3.

Is Scream logic basically Home Alone logic?

The original Scream 3 idea was brilliant. I was okay with Stu being alive for that twist because it really furthered the themes from the last two and deepened the world.

That’s intriguing. Excuse me while I go google what the original plan for 3 was.

Mathew Lillard is pretty great though. And super underrated. I wouldn’t mind him coming back if they can make it work.

I could see them doing some kind of commentary on how Hollywood is remaking new official sequels to horror/movies and dismissing the old ones. This kind of thing could allow for Stu to come back and have him rant on about it before he is "killed" again.

Stu coming back as the killer would be stupid but I also think there's room for it do be done in a clever meta-way of winking to the audience because we've seen this happen in other films, the Halloween reboot/sequel being a good example. Plus, Matt Lillard is good and his performance in the original was a lot of fun so on that level alone it would make for some fun.

I agree with some of the comments regarding Stu. I remember when Matthew Lillard said he was meant to come back for Scream 3 originally and even then I said "surely that would have been mentioned when the killings in Scream 2 started." he would be the first person they would talk to. Especially during Scream 3 when they have reason to believe a 3rd killer was involved in Maureen's murder. As much as I love Stu, leave him dead (imo)

The only way I'd be up for Stu being back is if they use him in a clever, compelling way for the narrative. Not so much as him being ghostface at the end. More so to critique people's strange fascination with true crime and serial killers. Something like to that extent.

What was the original idea?

That’s actually an interesting thought. We’re all thinking of ways to comment on scripted horror, but maybe the most pervasive thing right now is true crime. I don’t really know what they could do there, but I’d be intrigued to see it.

What was the original idea?

Stu was orchestrating the murders from prison as the mastermind behind a cult of killers. The twist would have been executed where all of the supposed dead victims would have risen to reveal themselves before Sidney when she walked into the room, revealing that they're all in on it. I thought the idea of going from a couple killers to a whole network was a great escalation and natural evolution of the themes of the first two. And I think it would have been a great twist. Williamson was always great of playing upon expectations of the Scream movies by knowing what it means to make a great sequel.

But it was axed due to Columbine. Williamson carried this idea over into The Following.

I for one am 100% down for Matthew Lillard getting high profile work, no matter how many logical hopes have to be jumped through. Dude is one of the most under-utilized talents in Hollywood IMO. And the True Crime angle that was mentioned would be a great way to take this, with or without Lillard/Stu.

True crime interest has been around for a long time before Scream first ever came about. I think to change to meta focus from horror films to true crime would be too much of a change plus the fun of horror films is the cliches and tropes they use throughout the years and the people in the horror movies trying to figure them out as they experience it.

In fairness, Halloween 2018 used our obsession with true crime as a way into their new story with those documentary filmmakers.

Scream has always touched on this subject to an extent, with Gale writing her true crime books about the murders, the Stab films, etc.

Some cool ideas I'm hearing here! If he was included, it definitely wouldn't have to be as straight forward as him simply being the killer or orchestrating the killing ala the original Scream 3.

Imagine Sid having to go visit Stu in prison to try and gain some insight on the case, ala Silence of the Lambs. Could just be a cameo. The true crime aspect could definitely be interesting to explore a bit more, it's always been present to some degree in the series. That's not to say this still wouldn't be about horror and pop culture. True crime docs and podcasts just have a higher profile now than it did before. I mean, even the MTV Scream series went all-in on that.

I dunno. Every Scream sequel and even the original has basically been about ghosts of the past that keep returning to haunt Sidney. Stu's character would be one way to actually put a human face to that idea instead of just Ghostface as a concept.

I just feel like whatever it is, this movie has to go something big to not come off like it's Scream 4.5-- a reboot of a reboot. Cause so far this already has a young cast and a Woodsboro setting. It's got to have some major things up its sleeve.

This is my concern too. Like I said, I think Scream 4 was a bit ahead of its time. Though remakes and reboots were the subject of the fourth, the idea of bringing the original cast back so many years later with a new generation of characters is something we see a lot of now.
