Scream 5 in Development

This is my concern too. Like I said, I think Scream 4 was a bit ahead of its time. Though remakes and reboots were the subject of the fourth, the idea of bringing the original cast back so many years later with a new generation of characters is something we see a lot of now.

Yeah, I see that. Wes Craven directing aside, I kind of wish we never even had the fourth. If Scream 3 had been the last until now, 20+ years later with the original cast returning hype would be even higher. It would feel a little more special.

I suppose, but then again, ten years between is still a long wait and enough where it would be special. What I liked about the fourth was it came out on its own terms because Williamson had an idea. I get your point, but I'm glad they didn't wait for any particular symmetry. Scream 4 I thought came out at just the right time, even if it was a flop. A few years too early, it would be outdated, and later, well, I think the fourth would have been beefened up even more for today's standards with the legacy sequel instead of the reboot and remake angle. And there is cross pollination between those two. I think it's more on these new filmmakers to really come up with a cool, fresh idea. Because this has the chance of being similar to the fourth with some minor differences.

Something I just realized, out of all the killers throughout the films, Stu was the only one that died in a way aside from being shot or stabbed(though the latter did happen to him, but he didn't die from that).

You could have Sydney come back after releasing a new book, something that she considers to be the most true account of the incidents after she has grown up and really had time to think about these life changing moments more. Have Stu return and say something along the lines of "you just released a "new book"...im back..doesnt this all seem a little familiar to you Sydney? Are we in the 12 sequel or is this the Hollywood do-over?!" obviously written better than that but the general Jist

Who wants to bet Dewie and Gale are divorced and Dewie is with Hicks now? Seems like a pretty safe bet with her coming back. And they already planted the seeds of Gale feeling bored and purposeless in Woodsboro in 4. Obviously would have a bit of a nod to real life too.

Yeah, honestly I think it's good that the 4th one already kind of dealt with the remake/reboot thing. I think if that movie were to come out now, it would feel a bit more predictable and a bit late to the party.

This film seems like it will inevitably have some cross-over, but the film honoring 4's canon by bringing in Hicks gives me confidence that the filmmakers are well-aware of what 4 was doing and wouldn't want to simply repeat that.

Been watching the series again recently. I'm willing to bet the Stab series will get rebooted in the next film. I also would love it if Sid sought out the new girl, and tried to help her out - in an attempt to prevent the new girl's life from becoming as unfortunate as her own. I think that'd do great service to the character of Sid.

It's easy to make this Scream 5, while also just naming it Scream. We all know what matters.

Syd's mom got killed... her boyfriend and his best friend killed people one year later... Billy's mom tried killing Syd at college... Cotton died [nothing else is important from 3, lol]... then her cousin wanted to be famous by replicating the Billy/Stu murders.

Yeah, but that's still carrying over a fair amount of baggage and story points (along with at least 3 major returning characters) compared to something like H18. With H18, the only important storyline carried over was the original killing spree from H78 which Laurie survived. Laurie and Michael were essentially the only two major characters from H78 to return in H18, with brief passing mentions of Loomis and what not. I do think a major reason that H18 was so successful was because there was NOT a lot of baggage carried over from all the previous entries in the franchise. It was a lean, back-to-basics approach that only needed to refer to the most iconic entry in the long-running Halloween franchise (H78), and featured a compelling story that was a natural extension/follow-up to the original film.

For this new Scream, I don't necessarily want them to ignore much of what went down in from Scream 2-4. Thankfully, the Scream series is not as convoluted or as ****ed up as the Halloween franchise was (H78 thru H20). There's no need to go into this new Scream film with a "blank slate". However, I also want this too feel fresh and not too bogged down with the events of the past films. The general audience might not remember or care about all that happened in the previous films.

That's why I keep saying it'll be interesting to see how they approach this, and I have faith that they'll come up with something cool.

Going in with a blank slate ala Halloween 2018 would basically be like having Randy return ignoring his death in 2. That won’t happen but I do hope he does get some kind of shoutout considering he’s one of the best characters in any slasher film.

Maybe the fact they're calling it Scream is a jab at these horror reboots starting over. I hope it is. That's the only way I can accept it. Maybe they're gonna make a Stab sequel and call it Stab in the movie.

Hicks is in the movie so we know they're not actually ignoring canon. Def could be a hint to the angle the film takes though.
