Scream 5 in Development

Out of all the slasher franchises, Scream is the one that I feel held up consistently through the sequels with Scream 4 being my favorite outside the original. So I definitely have high hopes for this one.

I can't believe it's been almost as much time between Scream 4 & 5 as there was between 3 & 4.

Completely agree, there’s no other franchise that comes to mind that hasn’t had a horrific follow-up and been around for almost three decades. Scream > Scream 4 > Scream 2 > Scream 3 are my order of preferred films, so I have high expectations for Scream 5.

That is my ranking is well

I think there were some press screenings today. I have a lot muted words on Twitter to avoid spoilers but I saw a reporter that was gonna watch it tonight.

There were screenings yes.

Twitter is raving about the first screening.

They are. Taking it with a grain of salt but it’s hard to contain excitement for the positive reactions out there. It was my introduction to horror as a kid, ugh I love this franchise so much.

The first two seasons of the MTV series is on Netflix. Is it worth a watch?

I have my tickets booked for Wednesday the 12th! It comes out a day early in Australia I guess? I am so excited! I’ve never seen a scream movie at the cinemas because I was a kid in the 90’s and didn’t even know there was a scream 4 until months after it released.

I have a really good feeling about this movie and I cannot wait to finally see Sidney, Dewey and Gale on the big screen. So glad we are getting this movie

It's crazy people can instantly call something a dumpster fire with no inbetween. Like, some guy was telling me "the first was good and the rest were dumpster fires" while laughing at my comments. We're all entitled to opinions, but Scream is easily one of the most consistent slasher franchises out there so I find it funny someone with a Halloween Kills background on facebook thinks all the sequels to Scream are trash. I like Halloween Kills, but I'd still take any Scream sequel over it any day of the week. This is some of the issues I do have with some hardcore slasher film fans. Each Scream sequel, in some form or another, was smart and original. Even if you don't like them, calling them a dumpster fire is just weird.

Btw, I'm one of the few who prefers Scream 3 over Scream 4.

Pay no attention to such nonsense my friend. There are lot of people out there with no taste and/or an urge to get a rise out of others. :yay:

But also, I've just come to accept that some horror fans simply don't like Scream and the meta take on the genre. Some people prefer something supernatural in their horror, others just like their slashers schlocky and simple. That's fine, it doesn't have to be for everyone. I think some have it in their head that Scream thinks it's smarter than the genre and miss the fact that it's also a love letter to the genre.

All the amazing reviews are making it hurt more knowing I can't see it when it comes out:csad:

I hope it's a big success continues to lead the slasher genre into a bit of a resurgence:up:

Looking forward to seeing everyone's reactions. I'll try to stay as spoiler free as I can. Won't be easy lol.

This is true. I have noticed that horror fans, particularly slasher ones, are pretty protective over the kind of slasher movies they love, no matter how campy or B-movieish they are. Which is cool! I mean that's fine. As I get older, I admit that I'm not really into run of the mill slashers anymore. I still love Halloween and such, but I don't really have a huge desire to see another Friday The 13th (but you know I'll watch if there is one). Scream, for me, has aged so well and each movie has perfectly suited the times they were released. I just love how smart they are.

I completely agree. Me liking Scream has nothing to do with thinking I'm above B-movie slashers or anything like that. Nothing wrong with enjoying those. Murder mystery mixed with horror is just a great formula, and it's just cool to have an iconic franchise where the whole history of the genre itself is canon within the movies. And then a core trio of actors who have been there from the beginning adds to the emotional investment. There's a lot of layers in it that make it such an enjoyable series beyond just the kills.

The Scream films are unique in terms of horror franchise because there really is a through-line in all the films in terms of story and character development. We've been lucky enough to not only have the same main characters in each film, but the same actors also. It's been cool to see how Sidney develops as a character at different stages of her life as she faces different tribulations, but also the same can be said for Dewey and Gale. This is something the Halloween franchise is only now attempting to do with these new series of films following Laurie and her family in each film.

Each film is also story and mystery/suspense-focused, rather than other slasher films where the main purpose of the sequels is to have higher kill counts and much more graphic, over the top kills. There are real twists and real turns, along with real emotional stakes -- not just a mindless zombie killer dispatching victims. Even the side characters are usually better written and add some nice touches to the films compared to other slasher franchises. And beyond that, each film does at least try to have something to say about the state of horror or cinema in general.

The production value has always been consistent and top-notch for the most part, with Scream 4 being the exception that at least looks the ugliest and cheapest. This is something that would always go downhill in the old days of slasher films, which each sequel budget getting smaller and each film looking cheaper. They mostly all look and feel like real movies with good cinematography, set pieces, scores, etc.

I'm a horror nut, so I have soft spots for most of the ****ty films and franchises of the past. Nightmare, F13, Halloween, etc. The Scream films are similar to those in some ways, but different and better and others. We really haven't gotten a Scream film that was completely garbage. It also helps that we're only about to have the 5th film in the Scream franchise, rather than the 12th or 15th. It's helped prevent the series from getting too played out.
