The first episode was a bit of exposition overload.

Ben Barnes found his niche as charismatic villain with performances Dorian Grey, Westworld, The Punisher and now this.

Strangely enough despite having never read the books I could still tell the author of the books was female just by how the relationships in the story are written.

Overall the show was ok.

I liked this overall but there were a few things that I think could’ve been handled better. As much as I like actress, Alina as a character suffered from being another one of those naive protagonists who needs to be told what to do. I liked her in the first episode where seemed to be taking initiative but then when she finds out about her powers, she becomes less proactive until much later.

I also felt her romance with the Darkling was a little underdeveloped. I feel like we didn’t see them interact all that much before they kissed. Maybe I’m biased because I like Mal more . And the Crows were all great too. Looking forward to seeing more of them. Having read Six of Crows, I get what the Nina and Mathias stuff was leading up to but it still felt very disconnected from the rest of the storyline. And you could see the writers stretching their story out because they would have like one scene and then disappear for entire episodes.

I hope it gets renewed. Hopefully an announcement is coming soon because this does seem to have been a success for Netflix.

i have re-read the Crows Duology and King of Scars twice. I've only read the shadow & bone trilogy once. sometimes i think about reading it again to remember what i've forgotten.

Anybody start Season 2 yet? I was originally planning to only watch like half of the episodes yesterday and ended up pretty much binging the whole season which honestly went by way faster than I thought it would.

For me this is still one of the best fantasy shows out there and probably my overall favorite right now because outside of GOT/HOTD I'm definitely enjoying it more than both ROP and The Witcher.

I love the worldbuilding and they definitely know how to balance a lot of characters while also making sure to give each of them their moments to shine and I can't wait to see more.

Hopefully, it doesn't get cancelled but knowing Netflix it probably will.

last i heard they were already talking about spinning off Six of Crows, which was far more interesting and rich to me imo. Ketterdam > Ravka to me lol
