Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel! - Part 1

I don't know what is expected of a Predator trailer at this point to be honest.

I never did quite get that comic; why would Predators fight (what essentially is) Skynet? Predators are in for the hunt; Terminators are mere machines that want to end biological life (generally). What purpose would a Predator have fighting a well oiled machine?

Not particularly something I'd be interested in watching either; I like the blood and gore in the Predator films (among other things); not really something you can properly emulate with Terminators - especially the liquid-metal kind.

Makes a kind of sense. Predators are known to be drawn to "hot zones" where there's a ton of conflict, so the Skynet War would certainly tickle their fancy. Also, as a species of hunters, Earth would be a playground between hardened human soldiers and the machines that have nearly wiped them out.

Best left in the comics though.

Is that a joke?

Because I just read the new batch of test screenings reactions...

Do you have a link? I can't find anything about new reactions, just the old ones from last year.

Its a re-make of the first

Go on then, I'll bite. How do you possibly back that claim up?

Yeah this looks next to nothing like the first. Heck that's one thing that I'll give it, it doesn't really look like any of the previous films. It looks like it's it's own thing at the very least.

Not a joke at all. When the ****'s a movie directed by Shane ever scored remotely that low?

Even the films he's only written and not directed, the lesser-loved of his stuff, is heads and shoulders above that on RT for the most part. You're hating this because you want to hate it.

Controversial movie with the fandom due to choices made? Sure, maybe. Even probably. It's not going to be a "40 out of 100" movie with critics and general audiences though. That's crazy talk.

Well, Team of numb-nut squaddies have to group together to defeat Predator, cue testosterone flying a plenty, then....ooooh a twist, an even bigger Predator exists so it's a fight for survival. I saw that in 1987 thanks.

'Cause the original film was set in civilization, had three predators, the government having caught one and experimenting/studying it for a while. It had legacy elements and crazy people and an autistic kid.

REHASH!

Gotta love you guys.

Alright then, let me put it another way, I have zero interest in this film, based on what's been presented thus far.

The 87 group were already a team.

Apparently in this script they are forced together and known as "the loonies" or something.

That's all superficial gubbins. If you make a film about some people fighting a Predator and then a sequel about some people fighting a Predator BY DEFINITION it's a rehash. A skilled filmmaker can disguise that by mixing up the genre. For example, Aliens is essentially a big budget remake of Alien but by shifting the genre to action from horror that accusation is rarely leveled. Similarly, Terminator 2 is big budget 'rehash' of The Terminator but again, the genre is shifted to action from stalker/slasher movie. It remains to be seen what Black has done with this one but you can't pretend it's this massively original and progressive piece of art based on (albeit what little) promotional material we've seen so far.

Yeah, and people were claiming that Deadpool 2 was a complete mess, in deep trouble and undergoing a major last-minute rehaul in order to save it. Neither of which is true. The theatrical is virtually the same as the one tested in March. Which tested very well, despite people's claims of the opposite.

I can already imagine this being as controversial as Iron Man 3, which is still the best movie Marvel Studios has ever done IMO.

Jeremy Conrad claimed it. And he is notoriously wrong. This is a lot of different people saying it after multiple test screenings.

I want Boyd Holbrook to make it and be in successful things. I love KKBB. I love The Nice Guys. Until the trailer and many, many reactions from screenings I was rooting for this one. But sure I wanna hate it :funny:

There were at least 2 screenings since then. I'm not linking you to my PMs on another board but I'm sure they reactions aren't hard to find

Jesus, man. If you look at things as broadly as this, everything's a rehash of ****in' everything.

Aliens isn't a goddamn thing like Alien, what are you even talking about? One's a tense, slow-burn horror flick that pans out differently everyone at the time would expect, the other's a big brash rip-roaring rollercoaster thrill-ride with guns blazing.

But I guess since both feature Xenomorphs and are set in space, both broadly fall into the R-rated horror-thriller classification, Cameron was just ripping off Scott. Good to know. :whatever:

Terminator's a little more similar in that both use the chase mechanic, just with the antagonist inverted, but even then it's hard to make a "rehash" argument with a sequel by the time guy who had them be similar intentionally.

Also, last time I checked nobody said d*ck about Black's movie being "massively original". Just that featuring a squad of soldiers and a member of the same antagonist species as the original is hardly grounds for it being a rehash. We don't know crap about how this thing plays out.

That's where my money is. From what I've seen a lot of the Predator fanbase seem to be part of the humour-is-bad brigade. It's got to be grim and seriousorz.

All I can find is some reddit threads with a handful of melodramatic man-children taking umbrage with the idea of there being humour and a kid in a Predator film, and acting like it's now some sort of "soccer mom" Disney comedy.

One fellow in particular, goes by the name "Predator-2", seems to have made it his personal mission to go into every thread and s*** all over the film for those reasons. A very self-serious chap, can't seem to take a joke at all.

So yeah, I'm not seeing anything compelling really.

What seems to me over the years is that fans have a harder time with more tones than a singular one. It just seems more difficult for them to comprehend. It's a reason I think why so many people love Nolan and his singular toned films than maybe a Raimi who work in a variety of them. Tone is more blatant and surface level and easier to get for many people. So when a franchise film is working in more variety or even different to an extent, especially a pre-established with preconceived notions of what it is, rather than what it can be (fandoms commonly have this problem too) it's why these people go insane. It's too outside that familiar level.

This film seems to be like that.

When did these movies have varying tones? They seem to be consistent.

I mean this film seems to be working in varying tones and influences. Versus the last films, especially the first which is an action movie.

Apparently there's gonna be new trailer tomorrow https://***********/trailertrack/status/1011294527636803585

Cogent argument.

Again, Aliens isn't a damn thing like Alien as a screenplay, confined spaces & xenomorphs aside.

For all we know The Predator breaks away a good deal from Predator, too. We don't know d*ck about this in context.
