Shane Black Directing Predator Sequel! - Part 2

Also one of the best things about the first film is that, Arnold was scared!! Like that must have been something to behold for movie fans in the 80's. Badass muscle-bound action hero Arnold in his prime, not only going up against something that was just toying with him and throwing him around like a ragdoll, but Arnold really selling the fear that Dutch was feeling at that point. And it was played straight in the climax.

This film, has none of that tension and suspense, it's just not scary.
Good call on the original film. It's my favourite Arnie film of the lot.

Which is really ironic. Since Black's excuse for the Upgrade was, that he wanted to make the Predator scary again. And apparently the only time you feel any suspense and the characters show true fear, is when Munn's character hides from the regular Predator.

Yeah to Munn's credit she was the only one who was able to make the Predator feel remotely scary or intimidating in this film. The rest of the time, they come across as, well stupid and sloppy to be honest.

If you are agreeing that nothing can tell you whether you will enjoy a film (and by your one liner I'm guessing you might just be confused), then you have no reason to complain about people posting RT scores as your same argument applies to everything else (every bit of news, speculation, every set photo, trailer, magazine article, interview, twitter reaction, even fellow fan reviews) too. Do you protest about those just as vociferously? What exactly are we supposed to post about if nothing can tell us whether we will enjoy a film and we should only post things that tell us whether we will enjoy a film? Is this the end of the Hype? :(
To me, discussion is about arguments, perspectives, etc. Not about "post "bla bla XX%, ble ble YY%" /post".

Posting bare RT numbers is essentially different to posting trailers, interviews, fan reviews, etc. I ranted about RT enough already, I don't want to sound like a broken record, anyone can find all that in this thread.

Noone's asking you to like those RT posts or talk about them. But if you want to tell people to stop doing things (things that are held up as ok by the majority in the forum) you will need to keep making your point for each new person that you come across doing it that you want to stop. All of those things mentioned are a discussion point to someone which is why they all get posted for every big CBM, even though there are people who don't care about set photos and interviews, others who don't want to be spoiled by watching any trailer footage, some like you who don't want to hear about results from aggregator sites and others who don't want to hear twitter reactions (I find them a waste of time myself as they seem to always be very positive - but I don't ask anyone to stop posting them). The burden of proof is on you every time on this one friend, it's a hard path I know. ;)

The first film also was more clever than many give it credit for. It's almost a subversion of 80's action movies and machismo. You have this team of muscle-bound, macho, gun-toting 80's badass action hero's, who spout one liners and ooze "masculinity" who are then picked off one by one by a foe that they're firepower is nearly useless against (hence them firing off into the jungle for like a minute straight with everyone that they have and only managing to slightly wound the Predator) and can kill them with relative ease.

Heck the most stereotypically "macho" one (Blaine), who chews tobacco, carries the biggest gun, and is a one-liner machine (his "sexual Tyrannosaur line, or "it's payback time," or "I ain't got time to bleed," etc), gets taken out SECOND, with a shot to the back instead of getting a "heroic last stand" like he might have in other action films.

And Dutch starts out as an uber-confident, sunglasses wearing, cigar smoking, Arnold badass that cracks one-liners during fights and is in-control. And then as it goes along he gets more and more freaked-out scared, so by the end the one-liners are gone and he mostly "talks" in animalistic yells/roars/etc. And all of his weapons are gone and he wins by essentially employing "caveman" fighting, being clever, and just plain lucky as well.

AND despite technically "winning," the last shot of him in the helicopter at the end implies that he might be mentally and emotionally broken/exhausted by his ordeal (plus he lost his entire team along the way as well).

Predator 2 kind of does this with Cop clichés as well (although it's not as prominent there TBF).

This movie WISHES that it was that clever and smart.

Wonderfully said.

Damn, now I'm in the mood to watch it again. Time to dig out that blu-ray. XD

Predator 2 is also uses subversion as the Hi-tech crew with Hi-tech equipment (hi tech during that time anyway), and a special Cop team, gets taken down pretty quickly and it's upto ordinary Cop with little equipment to fight the predator using his instincts.

Now I want to see the original ending with the friendly predators, cant be worse then what we got

You sure? Would you like to see genetic failures like 3 legged and even Spider Predators on screen? Or another 2 Predators that are getting wasted by the CGI Predator?

I'm rewatching AVP:R for the first time since it was in theaters. It's frequently in poor taste, the human characters are cardboard, and it really is astonishingly darkly lit. BUT. I think it's a better constructed film than THE PREDATOR. It's not great, but it kinda works. I can at least follow it from A to B. I especially like when it let's the Predator be the protagonist. And I can't believe I'm saying this because I hated this movie when it first came out.

The score is actually a pretty nifty pastiche of Silvestri and Horner.

Not multi legged predators but to see 2 already working with government in a goodway would have been a better twist then the bland ending we got. Might have made more sense with the fugitvie predator coming here because the cut in theaters makes zero sense currently. Also for once them working with humans would make sense story wise unike avp

Heh, I'm re-watching Predator at the moment. Fantastic as always, but damn, I forgot how much the characters look like wax figures in the blu-ray release. It's so distracting. ='D I haven't watched in a long time, so I don't remember if it was only in the beginning or if that issue pops up later again.

I heard there was or is going to be a 4K release? Does anyone know what the quality is like?

This is what I read in the script.

AvP: R was horrible. One, as others have said, it was literally way too dark to see what was going on. Two, it actually made AvP look even better in comparison. (And I sorta liked AvP as a pure popcorn movie)

Why didn't John McTiernan get another shot? He seems blacklisted.

The man gave the film world two classics with Predator and Die Hard.

I got curious about this myself, so I went to his wiki and holy crap, he was busted by the feds for illegal wiretaps (on a producer of one of his films), lying to the feds, perjury and has legit felony convictions. No wonder he stopped working, who would produce a movie for him after he did that to another producer?

John McTiernan - Wikipedia

He seems super broke now. On the plus side, if he does have a comeback, we know what story he should tell. :funny:

Read that the producer he wiretapped is Charles Roven. lol

Yikes.
