Yeah estimates keep going up. Can't wait for tomorrow. My showing is sold out for a Saturday 3:45pm Dolby. It looks like this could have great walk-ups. I was scared the MCU was starting to become too front loaded BUT I shouldn't have been scared since the BW front loading is very rare in the MCU and that opened with PA so of course...duh lol

Great that it’s doing well and a sign of confidence to the studio movie forward. We don’t need any more delays for the MCU release schedule.

Hopefully it can keep going strong for a while.

I wonder how much of this box office for the opening weekend are just MCU fans vs general audience though. I guess we’ll see for Saturday and Sunday.

According to the guys over at BOT, Friday+Thursday looks like 30.75M. Good stuff

I honestly could not be happier with these numbers and I hope it hits $70M+ for the 3-Day and ends up over $80M for the 4-Day Labor Day weekend which it easily should unless its really frontloaded.

This movie is going to have great WOM too and I can definitely see it making a run for $200M+ which would put it well over Black Widow which I know none of us would have seen coming a year ago.

I believe its more than a possibility though.

If it doesn't have a huge 2nd weekend drop like F9 and Black Widow then 200M domestic is guaranteed.

Over 200 m for Shang Chi are pre-pandemic numbers.

Incredible. And that's with Hurricane Ida.

Great opening. But really hoping it has long legs and doesn’t drop off next week when everyone who really wanted to see it already has.
The movie has a 99% verified audience rating on RT and a raving A Cinemascore. The word of mouth on this is strong. I think this will get to 200 million domestic which is great.

The 29M opening day is HUGE. It almost broke the weekend record in 1 day. 70-80M weekend looks likely. I said before that ANYTHING anywhere close to BW would be huge and that looks like exactly what is happening. Yay! Can't wait to see it, but it'll be discount Tuesday.

It has a very good corridor WRT new releases. I suspect strong word of mouth, lack of D+ release, and the lack of wide theatrical releases will lead to smaller drops than we're used to seeing; although you never know for sure how people will react in the pandemic.

‘Shang-Chi’ Wowing With $80M Labor Day Weekend Box Office Record – Deadline

Things are looking up! I loved the film btw. I think much of the GA will too.

I wonder if John Campea will talk about this tomorrow in his Shang Chi Spoilers Discussion thread or on his show on Monday if it holds true to form. He has said that he expects Shang Chi will make $45 million but also says that if it makes more, that's fantastic since he loves the movie and thinks it's awesome and he's hoping for the latter but expecting $45 million.

In normal times I agree. But a lot of people rightfully still have hesitation to be in a theater for 2 hours and no word of mouth is going to change that.

We’ll see next week. This is the first MCU film released since the pandemic happened to be a theatrical only release(albeit the window has shortened to 45 then it hits Disney+ afterwards) and we’re in untested waters here. Let’s see how this movie performs without a dual streaming release. I think films like Free Guy shown movies can be leggy even in a pandemic as long as they connect with an audience and people seem to really be responding to this film, so I’m very optimistic this will have a strong second weekend holdovers.

He should mention it as it looks like it’s making way more than that! So happy for the film.

Much better than expected numbers for Shang-Chi!

I had the opening day pegged for around $24M (3x the previews which is pretty typical for Marvel Studios films). The Saturday drop still isn't typical Marvel though, and is the indicator that we're still deep in Covid box office times. Usually with Marvel films the Saturday number takes a big jump from TRUE Friday. Projections for today have the Saturday number at -7% of true Friday (-34% from Friday total).

In normal times, we'd be looking at at least $80M THREE day based on the Friday number.

That being said, still a great result for Shang-Chi. Hopefully it's enough to convince Disney/Marvel to stick with their exclusive theatrical releases.

I think there’s at least a decent chance now that Marvel stick to their dates. With the original projection it felt like a domino effect of dates getting pushed back was most likely.

Yep! That, and I think movies like this deserve an exclusive theatrical window. I know that's what Feige wants, and I know everyone involved in big movies like this benefit from box office receipts way more than streaming (I'm on team ScarJo lol).

That's saying something too, coming from someone who after September 13 won't be able to see these movies in theatres due to the vaccine passport.
