Probably because despite DC having a universe they really don't. They will have a new Superman & Batman which is their Cap and IM. No AquaMan 2 yet, was WW2 a in the past movie? do they have any movies post JL? Shazam I didn't watch. Suicide Squad 1 was a joke, I did watch 2 and enjoyed it a bit but felt like a one off.
Marvel you know will connect to previous movies even with an out of the blue character like Shang-Chi that has no real history of being in video games or cartoons.
We know Dc is all over the place and at this point, doesn't care much about 1 having universe, especially with the release of Joker and The Batman.

That's why I didn't bother with Suicide Squad even though I didn't think it looked bad at all. I just didn't know what to make of it. I watched the trailers and all I could think was "What is this supposed to be?".

It confused me when it took place. Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is the second to the last movie I've seen in a movie theater. with only 10 DCEU movies released, we already have 2 Dc movies that doesn't seem inline with the dceu, so personally I don't feel likeits a must watch to watch every upcoming Dc film. Unlike the mcu. While the Sony Marvel movies (Venom/Morbius/Kraven) are easy to ignore/see they aren't in the mcu.

I think at this point the Marvel Studios brand is recognized by the general audience.
Yes it is. I also don't know any blockbuster franchise that is as consistent as the MCU. I feel like with the MCU, you have both quality and quantity. I feel like most franchises that have at least four movies, that i have seen, already have a real stinker. Mcu already has 25 released film under its belt - the movies are still well reviewed and doing well at the boX office. Even Tdw isn't as bad as the worst Harry Potter/X-Men/James Bond/Alien/Spider-Man/Star Wars/JP/MI/Fast Saga movie.

I thought TFA (NOT The Force Awakens) was one of Marvel's most underrated movies; maybe THE most underrated. It also flows well into the subsequent movies. Steve grows, but never loses who he was. Terrific character and a terrific job by Chris Evans; who, by the way, turned out to be quite the good actor.

While not the best "superhero origin" movie ever, TFA does provide a textbook example of how to properly introduce a genre character to an audience that knows nothing about the subject matter.

Also they’ve improved since those early days. The ratio of great to good to bad is higher now and a TDW at this stage would really stand out.

They are trying a different direction which is fine but it means they don’t get the same universe support for smaller films. You can have Aquaman and Joker break out to an unexpected billion but the next smaller DC films can still end up with low numbers jeopardising their own sequels. I think the MCU is going to be one of the few safe franchises post pandemic until the recovery is much more certain.

Methinks Scarlett Johansson had a very enjoyable weekend.

We have a new meme god.

Industry estimates are between 91 and 92 million for the four day Labor Day weekend

Actuals are in, 94.4 million over 4 days.

‘Shang-Chi’ Wowing With $90M Labor Day Weekend Box Office Record – Deadline (ignore the title, the story is updated)

First goal was a great first weekend, it definitely exceeded just about everyone's expectations. Next goal for me is 200 million. I think it's already in the bank, just depends when. Final goal is probably not going to happen but I hope it will, reaching at least 250 million.

Wow. Very little drop off from Sunday points to really strong word of mouth and bodes well for a great hold next weekend. It’s reminding me more and more of GotG.

Spoke with Charlie....

My comparison with Aladdin falls off starting Tuesday, as Aladdin came out at the beginning of the summer period so weekdays were stronger. Instead of dropping around 50% today he thinks it will drop around 70%. So don't be alarmed by a much smaller number today. All normal.

I think most people having Monday off helps with the Sunday hold. One extra day to do stuff you’d normally do on a Sunday.

Yes, true. The Sunday plays more like a Saturday when people know they have the day off after.

Yep, this is usually how Monday holiday weekends go (aka MLK Jr. Day weekend, Presidents' Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend, Labor Day weekend).

I knew that would be the case since summer break is over. So I'm hoping for better weekend holds to balance it out. Would be great to see it under 50% but anything under 55 would still be pretty good to me.

If it's close to 60 then we're getting the usual blockbuster trajectory we've see in plenty of MCU movies already.

On that note, question for you guys all in the US:

When does school start there? Or is it different by state? I know here in Canada Labor Day weekend isn't that big because, despite it being a holiday weekend, most folks are preparing for school, which always starts the day after Labor Day. Some families here obviously will use it as their last chance for a trip but growing up our family didn't bother. We just laid low and got into back to school/back to work mode.

Yeah exactly. Me too. Word of mouth here is the X-Factor. Most people are expecting about a 55% drop but some movies defy that and have huge 2nd Friday and Saturday increases, making for a great 2nd weekend drop. We'll see if that's the case with SHANG-CHI.

@JB33 All the schools around me (Ohio) started in mid-August.

Okay so yeah, school is already in full swing so Labor Day weekend really feels like its own holiday weekend, rather than the last leg of summer holidays like it is here.
