Shazam Shazam! Box Office Thread | Early Predictions

R/Boxoffice is being very depressing so imma just spend my time here. I didn't know Shazam doing poorly in 3 markets meant that its OS haul will be dead.

I’d really like this to be a big hit.

Not only because it’s a fantastic film and I want to see a sequel, but because I also want to see WB be brave enough to do characters like Boostee Gold, Blue Beetle, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Zatanna, etc.

*sigh* it’s never not stressful being a DC fan

They're being purposedly negative too.
After searching for the source in France, I saw that the estimative for the weekend is 40% of Aquaman. Aquaman made 27 million total in France. 40% of that is 11 million. Wonder Womande made 16 million there.
Maybe it's bad, but not really end of the world bad.
I'll just wait and see. I disagree that this movie hasn't been marketed overseas. I'm from a 3rd world country and it's been advertised more or less the same as many other superhero movies.
It also seems like France dislikes the movie which is not the case of most countries. My country loved it.

This is sad... Is the marketing not as strong? Where is it going wrong?

"Stronger than Superman, richer than Batman, and is more beautiful than Wonder Woman" is an actual marketing line from a TV spot where I live... On screen you have Shazam doing faces..

This should tell you they don't know how to market it.

This year's Bumblebee...
I'm contributing by seeing the movie tonight. I'm actually really pumped from what I've read in reviews. Jeremy Jahns also loved it, who I tend to have similar taste with more often than not.

I hope this doesn't end up like Into The Spider-Verse with stellar reviews and a lacklustre box office.

I think Avengers: Endgame is affecting many movie's Box Office collections worldwide, I think all movies like Dumbo, Hellboy, Pet Sematary, Shazam will earn less than what they would have earned had their respective Studios released them more then 3/4 weeks leading upto Avengers:Endgame.

This year so far, WB have 2 prominent well received movies that don't seem to set BO on fire (the other one is Lego Movie 2). While of course Shazam won't do worse than LM2 (it's not even first weekend yet), WB needs to push their marketing game better.

In other place, it's really doom and gloom bordering to fake concern. :funny:
I already saw a familiar name that I shouldn't mention.

Shazam should have been released earlier IMO. Endgame is going to break it's legs... Although with a smaller OW than expected it's multiplier will be decent.

We don't know how this movie will do in the long run, that's where it will get the money, we will see.

Yeah that tag line sounds more like a superhero parody than anything.

I agree. What was wrong with pushing it up around during it's advance screenings? Captain Marvel had a good 3 week run for big numbers.

Now the shoe is on the other foot and AEG is giving Shazam 3 weeks to make it's money. Seems like WB was caught in between a rock and a hard place.

King's It may be placing unrealistic expectations on Pet Semetary. Get Out, Us and even Halloween remake are around 250M WW movies.

Even though the 1st 2 Hellboys came out pre Avengers/TDK and were more fan hits than audience hits, it's still not a definite that it could find the same success as the more mainstream comic book movies.

Dumbo didn't have the critical ratings and personally, while Alice in Wonderland did well and probably is maybe closer in style to that movie, don't think it has that type of appeal.

And other people have brought it up regarding Aquaman, Aquaman doing well didn't necessarily mean Shazam would. I just don't think Ant-Man numbers should be considered bad.......

Honestly didn't Disney move EGs release date up a week?? Or was it always coming out April 26th. All this talk about WB picking a bad spot, but they did originally give Shazam 4 solid weeks to itself.

Yeah, Endgame got bumped up a week.

But it was an expected bump given that the Mouse had already pushed up last year's Avengers movie.

Yeah, my only other thought on this, was that WB didn't see, given the low-budget, any reason to bump Shazam up as to them it wouldn't make much of a difference?

I think this is a reality check. Wonder Woman and Aquaman had mini-ads in BvS and Justice League. And without a strong DC brand, Shazam is looking like a phase 1 MCU movie.

Shouldnt that be exactly what it is though? No one complained about the Phase 1 films or how much they made (outside of Hulk) so shouldnt all of us be happy if this does something similar with a character no one knows? (honest questions not attacking you)

The studio may have been unnecessarily concerned about Dumbo's potential appeal.
But it probably didn't matter much anyway. Outside of a complete box office cratering, the rave reviews and connection to the broader DC cinematic universe should pretty much guarantee a sequel.

Yeah, Phase 1 Marvel is fine! I believe CA:TFA actually lost money for the Mouse during its theatrical run. And it worked out ok for old Cap (at least for the next few weeks).

2012 stared the shift in the genre with how much CBMs made. I think a solo Hulk movie could do 800M now.

TFA cost $140 million and made $370 million WW. Depending what ratio you use to figure out how much the movie made it could have made $90 million (double the budget) or $20 million. (2.5 the budget)

That should put things in perspective for people.

Maybe but it seems something about the character doesnt connect with the audience outside of team up films. Not sure why...personally I loved Incredible Hulk it is one of the few MCU movies I really enjoyed when I saw it.
