Shazam Shazam! Box Office Thread | Early Predictions

Yeah, I'm surprised at how much Sandberg was able to include in his movie despite having small budget, the flying effects, the magical transformation effects, CGI creatures, the sets of Rock of Eternity Cave, Carnival, and so many on locations shoots across Toronto, the superhero costumes and many actors who played character roles apart from main cast. Well done.

I would think the ad budget would rise a bit as well.

I can't help but feel that a sub-400 WW total is kind of a disappointment. I get the lower budget and all, but with the red hot audience and cinema scores and the general superhero movie climate, I thought it was going to breeze to 500 million WW

All that matters is WB feels justified to give it a sequel which I’m 98% sure they will. The response has been resoundingly positive and I think WB knows Endgame took some wind from their sails which isnt Shazam’s fault. I think the heads know that a sequel in a better release date could make them much more money. Shazam was essentially Batman Begins, well received, modest box office but earning good will for a bigger sequel.

What you thought doesnt much matter though...all that matters is what WB thought and I would bet everything I own they are happier than hell with it.

I know the sequeal will do so much better tbh

Another thing about the budget is really about the cast. Take Suicide Squad for instance. Does it look like the +75M (without counting the reshoots) bigger budget went mostly into the production? The effects and set pieces were on the same tier I'd say. And they also shot it mostly in Canada, didn't they? But the cast was clearly the most expensive part.
So if Shazam 2 doesn't bring in any big name actors, the budget doesn't need to balloon up too much.
All in all I could see the budget for the sequel being 120M tops, without restricting too much what they could do.

Shazam did fine. It wasn’t expected to be a tentpole. The production budget was modest compared with modern CBMs and they spent about as much on marketing as I have loose change in the cup holder in my car. It will turn a modest profit theatrically, make even more on ancillaries and set up a franchise young audiences will grow up with. Personally I’m bummed it didn’t do better but I knew the character BITD and a lot of people didn’t. I don’t think there’s anywhere to go but up with Shazam.

All of those movies would have underperformed no matter where they were. It isnt like if Dumbo came out in the Summer it would be better liked by people. Pet Semetary was a snoozer and I am not sure anyone liked Hellboy at all. The movies were placed where they were because the studios knew they had bomb written on them and at least no one will care after next week.
Pet Semetary is doing ok all things considered.

The release date didn't help the movie, even if we forget about Endgame (and CM a month before that), WB still set up Shazam to compete with movies like Dumbo, which was targeting same demographic (family audience and kids), luckily Dumbo didn't get good reviews as the movie was not that great, but nobody could have predicted that, WB took a risk with Shazam when they released Shazam a week after Dumbo.

So.... howw much are the predictions for this week until Endgame?
Can S! make at least another 30M WW? Will it die with Endgame? :argh:

WB's Rampage (2018) was released on 13 th April and Avengers: Infinity War was released on 27 th April (2 weeks after the release of Rampage), how did Rampage perform after IW's release ?

Week, Date, (Weekly Gross/ %Change)

1st week, Apr 13–19 ($45,600,066/0%),
2nd week, Apr 20–26 ($25,225,491/-44.7%),

3rd week, Apr 27–May 3($9,338,753/-63.0%),
4th week, May 4–10($6,200,353/-33.6%),
5th week, May 11–17($4,558,666/-26.5%),
6th week, May 18–24($2,171,686/-52.4%),
7th week, May 25–31($1,396,194/-35.7%).

Infinity War didn't have much impact on Rampage's Box Office.

Another $30 million WW shouldn’t be a problem. But I don’t see a lot beyond that, maybe another $10-20 million if all the stars align.

You should watch it instead of listening to what people said about it.

There’s no formula for why people like a movie they either do, or they don’t.

While A4 hype is definitely a great propeller, the 'A' Cinemascore did indicate that audience enjoyed it.
I don't watch it yet, but if I don't like it, well. Every movie has people who dig it or not. :D
Especially in CBM category. You could find some calling this or that movie 'trash' or 'masterpiece'. :funny:

But TBH I did surprised about the unusual amount of lukewarm or even negative reactions to CM that I found online in my country. Worried for a bit but the BO is great though, so it's all good business.

You can say that's is a testament of how huge A4 hype is. Or how great Disney is at handling many of their movies, making a new big movie as 'must see'.

Yeah, Captain Marvel's rise this time around, feels more calculated than Black Panther. But it's working for Disney! So hats off to them for this strategy.

Let's see if WB could follow through. This year, their 'higher budget' movies didn't blew up in a way that some might anticipated.

Lego Movie 2, a sequel of a beloved and praised movie, couldn't even get $200M. Shazam! managed to save their face with performing better than tracking, get #1s and churning profit but didn't perform in a way that some expected. That's why you could easily find few loud internet voice who really trying to sell a narrative that it bombs.

Detective Pikachu and Joker have enormous hype though.
