Brad Pitt is easily one of the best actors in Hollywood now. I don't think I've ever seen Jared Harris in anything but he looks pretty creepy so I'm pretty pumped to see his performance.

I have to admit, I too am fairly disappointed it wasn't someone like Pitt or DDL. I had actually also hoped for someone like Liam Neeson (his name was thrown around and I really thought he would have fit as someone who was a physical as well as mental challenge to Holmes).

However, lots of people are saying this guy is a great actor, so I'm excited to see what they come up with.

Meh, I'm sure he'll be fine, but I just wanted someone of RDJ's stature that would have made the interaction between the two even more epic. Brad Pitt would have fitted that bill, Oldman too. I really didn't want a relative unknown to get this role.

Harris is really good actor! He was great in Fringe, and amazing in Benjamin Button.

Frost of collider.com confirms the casting AND the film shoots next week! That's out of no where!

So this confirms that WB and Cuaron have delayed Gravity. Bummer
Anyway good to hear hat shooting is about to begin.
Plus Harris's publicist confirmed the news. It is indeed official

UPDATE: The Wrap got a confirmation by Harris' publicist that he will indeed be playing Moriarty. There ya go.

Great casting choice, he's going to do a splendid job as Moriarty.

Brad Pitt is actually a damn fine actor. It's such a shame that the pretty-boy looks and now the tabloid-friendly relationship with Angelina Jolie have always prevented Brad Pitt getting the credit he deserves.

But back on topic, Jared Harris is great on Mad Men, and made for an impressive villain in Fringe. He should do well as Moriarty.
Brad Pitt's looks have nothing to do with my distaste for him as an actor. I've never liked his acting, ever. It has nothing to do with Tabloids, I just simply think that he is a s**tty actor. Deal with it.

P.S

It's my opinion that he can't act I never stated it as a fact. You are free to love his acting till the cows come home but I'm not changing my opinion because you, out of nowhere, made up a reason why I don't like his acting.

Thats the last I speak of this because I am off topic.

Ya Brad Pitt would have been cool to see but I think Harris is even better. Is Harris confirmed to play the role.

Harris is a chameleon, while I was excited for Pitt having him I think will be better as he will be Moriarty.

He went from season two of The Riches to season one of Fringe to season three of Mad Men. Each role completely different from each other and played them so wonderfully.

Was the other actor in the clip from the first season of Dexter.

I forgot how goddamn great he was in Fringe.

This is brilliant casting.

That man basically IS Moriarity.

I must say I shudder at the mere thought of Pitt playing him (even though I love him as an actor)

I think Pitt could have played a very good Moriarty. I was really hoping for someone who would have looked like a physical match to RDJ's more physical Holmes. (Though for that angle, I would have wanted Liam Neeson, even though he was never rumored as the villain.)

It's true that Pitt would undoubtedly have put up an imposing Reichenbach battle.

That's what I was thinking. I'm not saying this actor couldn't give us good action. But it would be of a different sort. Pitt could be much more physical and imposing. This guy could surprise us with his knowledge of fighting tactics. He would be more finesse and skill.

However, ever since hearing Liam Neeson as an idea way back when, I've been in love with that idea. I mean, Pitt would have been imposing, but holy **** Neeson would have looked awesome. And he could have easily pulled off the intellectual presence too.

I think Neeson would have been a way too obvious choice. He is pretty much suited to play every physically imposing yet shrewd villain. That's why he was cast as Ra's Al Ghul. And he could easily play Dudley Smith from James Ellroy's LA Trilogy to name one.

Neeson may have been obvious, but he's obvious for a reason. He's good at it. And the man has proven that he can pull off great fight scenes. Good actor, he can pull off the intelligent villain, and a physically imposing nature that lends himself to great fight choreography. That may make him obvious, but he's damn good at what he does. So I wouldn't mind it at all.

Though really, he was only mentioned once on these boards, I just hung on to that suggestion. Despite him seeming like an obvious candidate his name didn't come up all that often.

Any news on when this starts shooting?

Also, meet our new Moriarty.

Excellent clip. He reminded me of the brief glimpses we saw of Moriarty in SH1.

But Harris is taller than RDJ, so he ought to be a decent physical match.

That does help, but I was talking more in terms of the athletic presence. Pitt looks much more like a man who would be dangerous to fight. Neeson even more so.

However, after watching that clip, I like what I see. And he has a way of playing a menacing character well that will fit Moriarty.

My favourite moment of Jared Harris on Mad Men

Harris actually fits in more with Moriarty's physical description anyway. Pitt I think could have pulled off the brains but put an interesting twist on the character. I wouldn't have minded him also being a physical match as well.

Holmes owned Moriarty in the falls scene in the LXG comic. I wonder if Moriarty will be physical or not.
