Just be happy WB won't go the vampire route. I hope.

I am very excited for this movie.

Good God, no. No more vampire movies.

Although I must confess, I'd love to see a series of films where Holmes tracks down some of the famous horror figures of the era, like Dracula and The Phantom of the Opera. But it's probably best that never happens.

Just curious (since we're probably a long way off before any concrete news comes about) how does the the latest Sherlock Holmes film stack up against your other Holmes favorites? I honestly think I'd have to say that this one is my favorite. I won't rank the Rathbone films simply because I haven't seen them since I was a kid and I don't remember very much of them. Here's how I'd rank my Top 5:

1. Sherlock Holmes
2. Young Sherlock Holmes
3. Murder By Decree
4. The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes
5. Without a Clue

Honorable Mention: The Great Mouse Detective

i hope they make a sequel...

though it seems like the kinda sequel that will never happen

Downey dropped out of a movie Favs is directing so he could make this. It's happening

LOL someone seriously thought this? :hehe:

Well, you know, the murders were never solved...

I watched a show on television where this guy thought Jack the Ripper was a mortician. Apparently, this mortician (can't remember his name) worked in a mortuary located near all the murder sites, he had the knowledge and tools needed to commit the murders, and (kinda creepy) he testified at some of the Jack the Ripper inquiries and processed some of the victims. Something like that. It was actually an interesting theory.

Have the Elephant Man and Jack the Ripper ever been seen at the same place at the same time?

Nobody knows who Jack the Ripper was, so it's kinda hard to tell. :yay:

They delayed Harry Potter by 9 months so holding onto Sherlock Holmes until December 2011 due to The Hobbit's delay seems likely.

Don't think it is a delay.
It would've been a delay had they released Holmes somewhere in 2012.
I was just checking WIKI for info on the first movie. They began filming in oct of 2008 . That's basically a full year before release. Given the fact that a movie like SHerlock isn't very FX heavy , i think WB is readying the sequel for a dec 2011 release date.

This man speaks the truth. The public dug Holmes, drops-offs/word of mouth has been solid and its about to officially hit blockbuster status (i.e. $200 million gross). Don't see how the sequel doesn't hit Christmas 2011.

I really enjoyed this. It had its weak points but the overall feeling I left the theater with was overwhelmingly positive, especially after having read some of the books so recently. I like RDJ, but I actually thought Jude Law was every bit his equal, if not better. It's hard to create that kind of dynamic between two actors, but here it felt entirely natural. I look forward to seeing where this goes. Personally I want to see more, smart, small time detective work, maybe some trans-continental travel and more of the classic literary Holmes.

Hmmm... do you guys think that in part 2 we'll get to see a climactic battle between Holmes and Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls? I sure hope so.

I just reread that story the other day and it's really pretty funny how close Guy Ritchie's film does stick to Doyle's works. The only real difference is that in the stories, the action tends to take place off-page. But in that story alone, multiple attempts on Holmes' life are made and it ends in a duel on top of a cliff. Thus I think that anyone who complains about the action in the new film really is misinformed.

"Sherlock Holmes" played second fiddle to the aliens of "Avatar" at the box office, but the Victorian Age sleuth just beat out another extraterrestrial -- director Guy Ritchie has set aside the planned "Lobo" film to clear his schedule for a fast-tracked "Holmes" sequel, according to producer Joel Silver.

"Holmes" has pulled in $389 million in worldwide box office since its Christmas Day release and looks to add to that with overseas releases still pending in Germany, Japan, France and several other markets. The role of the famed literary detective also just earned Robert Downey Jr. a surprise Golden Globe, suggesting that the actor might still be in play for an Oscar nomination next week.

Silver is a producer of "Holmes" as well as "Lobo," which would adapt the ultra-violent antihero from the pages of DC Comics. Ritchie, who burst on the scene with "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" in 1998, has his biggest commercial success with "Holmes," and Warner Bros. wants to parlay that into a franchise as quickly as possible, Silver told me this afternoon.

"I don't think he's going to do it now," Silver said of Ritchie directing "Lobo." "The studio wants us and Guy to focus on making another 'Sherlock Holmes.' So I think we're going to be doing that. But we're seeing what happens with this. Everybody is analyzing everything. It's all kind of happening right now as we talk. 'Sherlock' is sitting at just about $400 million in worldwide gross and showing itself to be pretty effective and pretty strong. So we're trying to see if we can do something quickly with another 'Sherlock Holmes' movie. We have some ideas and some good story points."

Does that mean "Lobo" will be postponed until Ritchie is free, or is the plan to move on with a new director?

"I would guess a dfferent director," said Silver, who is producing "Lobo" with Akiva Goldsman and Andrew Rona. "It's all happening at once now. Everybody is talking about everything .... It's an ongoing conversation. Downey loves the experience of playing Sherlock and would love to play him again, and I'd love to see him play it again. Jude and all of them will be back and it will be great."

Our sister blog 24 Frames brought you the news earlier this month that Downey had dropped out of Jon Favreau's "Cowboys and Aliens" and the guess was that move was made for a Baker Street reunion. Now "Holmes" has knocked a second interstellar comic-book story off of its plan.
Silver said "Lobo" remains a viable project. In the 1980s, the character was a wickedly funny parody of the antiheroes Wolverine and Punisher, characters that now have a combined seven film appearances to their credit.

"It was created as a rebuttal to the Marvel characters and his vest said 'Bite me fanboy,' " Silver pointed out. "It was very much a response to Wolverine and Punisher and the other characters and I think now that makes it fresh [for moviegoers]. We're working on it now and it will be nice to put it together and make it happen."

And what about that rumor that Brad Pitt (who memorably worked with Ritchie on "Snatch") would be in the "Holmes" sequel as Professor Moriarty? Silver sounded less than optimistic about that one: "Well, I mean, we talked about that at one point, but you know as of right now we're not sure what we're going to do. We'll see what happens."

^I'm so glad Richie's coming back. Uncertainty about his return was one of the few things making me nervous about the sequel.

Can they please not make a sequel. the first movie bored me enough. I actually fell asleep near the end a few times. Wish i could get my 15 bucks back :(

You don't have to watch it if you didn't like the first one.

This movie made over 300 million worldwide; they couldn't care less about your $15.

Great to hear Ritchie back. That was one of my concerns. Now we need to hear Brad Pitt as Moriarty and I'm ready to ****ing go.

Glad to know Ritchie is coming back.

I always kinda figured Lobo would get scrapped anyway. I really don't think that's a character that would work in the movies. And if it didn't, it could destroy Guy Ritchie the way that Batman & Robin destroyed Joel Schumacher. I hope Ritchie sticks with Holmes and we get a trilogy.

Loved the first film and had no issue with the story or the action in it, however now Holmes and his methods are fully introduced a more labyrinthian mystery can be brought to the table.

I'm hoping Moriarty doesn't come face to face with Holmes until part 3 at least. I loved that he was in the shadows.

Yeah I loved the way they handled Moriarty, I reckon he will be fully involved in the sequel but perhaps pulling the strings and never actually facing Holmes, I also don't think there is any need to cast a big name actor in the role.

Irene should still continue working for Moriarty. If she doesn't I don't know why she'd even be in the film. She should double-cross him to help Holmes, however.

I liked her so I hope they bring her back, she could be trying to bring Moriarty down herself and cross paths with Holmes in the course of doing so.

I see Pitt is a popular choice for Moriarty. Who else would you guys want to play him besides Pitt?

Johnny Depp.
