Well, also, if you actually look a little into it, there's no real indication they thought the world would end at 2012, just that we may enter a new time period (like transitions from BC to AD). In fact, I believe I read on their calender they actually did have dates marked pasted 2012, they just haven't actually fully charted them out at the time.

First of all the Mayans did not say that the world was going to end in 2012. Their calendar just ends on December 21, 2012 and their civilization didn't make it past to update it.
