Should everyone in America have to learn spanish?

QWERTY Keyboards are the ****.

  • Yes, espanol should be taught from grade school on up

  • No, this is America...one language is enough

  • It's for ones personal benefit in this dog eat dog world

  • Not spanish, some other language

Why is this thread sporting the goofball, ridiculous question still alive?

How absurd would it be, in an alternate reality, if the American economy went super-bad, but America was a neighbor of France where the economy was neat, so tons of Americans fled to France, and then decided that since there are so many Americans in France, and that the Americans were disenfranchised by the language barrier, all French people should learn English?

Preposterous.

Yeah, initially I didn't notice that it was another "just when you thought the depths of dumb had been all plumbed out" Spawn thread.
I thought it was some blooming 12.5 year old thinking he was bustin' it live in your face with a thought-provoker. :csad:

Still, too long-lived.

No, everyone in American should learn english, damnit.

I'm sick and tired of the damned foreigners coming into the store I work at, and then getting fed up with me when I can't understand them.

I've had easier times with the deaf customers, for God's sake.

Seriously, half of the people born and raised in America can barely speak English. I'd like it if THEY learned how to speak it properly as well as long as we're at it.

They are taking our best jobs too like, landscaping, dishwashing, picking our fruit. :cmad:

I didn't start this thread thinking it would be thought provoking...although it hit two pages in seven minutes as I recall.

And it if makes you feel better calling me dumb Scream, more power to you.

People in America have the right to choose whatever language they want to learn...unfortunately we are a culture that believes this right to choose means not choosing to at all has no effect on us.

I know all that nonsense about us not having an "official language".
That's just to keep the immigrants happy.

We do, and it is English.

I can relate to your statement. I have to deal with a lot of Hispanic customers who don't speak any English and they have brought their 7 year-old to work as a translator. While I appreciate the effort, the kid just doesn't know enough of either language to help. Now I have broken down and learned enough Spanish to explain what I'm selling, ask a multiple choice question, and understand the answer. Outside that, I'm lost. And I have to say, I am also fed up with customers who seem to feel that everyone should speak Spanish for them.

No English - No Job

What good are they if they can't speak the Lingua Franca anyways?

Exactly my point.

It's pathetic that we try to "keep everyone happy" by not claiming a single language.

We're an english-speaking country, no question about it. We're known around the world for being the ignorant ones who only know English.

Seriously, the French are required to learn AT LEAST one additional language in grade school- but they still call French the national language.

The U.S.A. was founded by english-speaking Brits, and in many schools, the U.S. now requires at least a few classes in grade school involving learning a foreign language. But what do the majority of us learn growing up? ENGLISH.
