  • Valentine's Day

    Happy Valentine's Day, Guest!

People need to learn how to speak English in America.

No, because then I'd have to deal with people doing the wrong dance all the time and I'd have to give them a beat down (while dancing, of course) to make sure they knew they were wrong.

Better make that 6 then.

Tagalog isn't even a real language. That's like "speaking in tongues" only with less religioniness.

Can you imagine if we couldn't see our words on here, but heard all the clicks from the keyboard instead?

I also speak the language of the aliens from Signs.

With the logic you just laid out, wouldn't it make more sense to say that if you move to America, you have to learn American? And, exactly what IS the American language, anyway, but an amalgam of many, many others? If you're going to live in England, THEN maybe you should think about learning English. ;)

jag
You get the point, if you want to live in a country that speaks a language other than the one you speak, you should learn that language. And I feel ANY country has the right to require you to learn their language if you are going to live there. Tell me, why is it wrong for any country to require immigrants to learn the language???

I remember some of my fake speaking in tongues I pulled off when I was little and we attended a church where they taught that if you never speak in tongues you aren't saved.

Part of it was "AndalaSHAndolokiandokaniaso"

I was good, for a kid.

Required equals forced. Nobody should be forced to do anything but following the law.

Clarification. I get the point you are trying to make. I do not agree with it, however. But let me illustrate, if I can, what makes your idea so unpalatable to me: "Welcome to America! Home of the free, land of the brave! The place where you can be anyone you want to be and accomplish anything you want to, all on your own terms! You will experience freedom like you have never known or appreciated here in the United States of America. However, if you do not learn American English then you will be required to leave and return to wherever the hell it is you came from."

Hypocrisy much? :) Besides, I sure as hell don't want my tax dollars going towards enforcing something so ridiculous, nor do I want the government to get any bigger than they already are for such a purpose.

It's not forcing anyone to do anything. It's requiring someone who is moving to another country of their own choice and free will to have respect for their new home to learn it's language. If you don't want to learn the language, fine, go to a country that already speaks your language. Tell me jag, you don't want your tax dollars going to pay for enforcement of learning English, but you're fine with them paying to reformat the government forms into Spanish, to change all the phone systems at the IRS to accomidate Spanish, to paying bi-lingual government employees extra. And you call me a hypocrite!!!

What part of "Land Of The Free" just doesn't work for you?

If youre requiring, youre forcing. Its just a nicer word to use.

"Land of the Free" works just fine for me. But just because you are free, doesn't mean you don't have any resposibilities to yourself and your country. Freedom is far from free.

What part of "Tell me jag, you don't want your tax dollars going to pay for enforcement of learning English, but you're fine with them paying to reformat the government forms into Spanish, to change all the phone systems at the IRS to accomidate Spanish, to paying bi-lingual government employees extra" hit a little too close to home for you??

Forced: the power to coerce, persuade or convince, to compell by phyiscal, mental or moral means

Required: Asking by right, demanding or ordering to do something.

So you were forced to go school through your childhood, you've been forced to get a driver's licence, you are forced to pay taxes, your own body body forces you to eat, you are forced to pay money for the things you want to buy in Wal-Mart.

Actually, no, because that would be using my tax dollars to ensure that people can continue to remain free and make their own choices about what languages they will choose to learn and use in this country. Your plan would use my tax dollars to force people to do something, just because you don't like anyone speaking a language you don't understand. So, yeah....what part of Land Of The Free doesn't really work for you?

Yes.
Mal'Akai said:

No, a driver's license isnt a right, its a privielege and one that people can live without.

Mal'Akai said:
you are forced to pay taxes,

Uh yeah?

Mal'Akai said:

Eating is a necessity to live, speaking english isnt.

Mal'Akai said:

Yes, if not, its called stealing.

Did you have a point?

Are we counting American Sign Language as a language because that would be my fifth langauage. English, Spanish, French, Pig Latin, and ASL.

Just a note to a number of folks in this thread... using censored words in Pig Latin counts as by-passing the censors.

Everytime I see Tagalog, I think of Girl Scout Cookies.

Kidding :woot:

Please don't ban me. :csad:

You know what, this is pointless. Both of you are way to naive to understand anything. Jag, you think everyone in this country should have frredom with no responsibilty to their country or its established way of life. Darth, you feel no one should ever be required to do anything ever at any time, excpet by laws. And maybe I am a bit stubborn when it comes to catering to people who won't do things my way. But I still feel that your ways of thinking are way, way, too liberal. Liberal to the point that you will tolerate anything, no matter what. All under the guise of "Land of the Free."

Haha! Yeah, that's exactly what I said. :whatever:

I think it's naive to expect that making English the official language will actually change anything at all, but hey, whatever floats your boat.
