Should it still be called a racial slur?

Wha...?!?! How could anyone think I meant what was said in the "qoute"? That was my comment on how society is, I thought that was clear. I think any form of racial abuse is disgusting, I was just pointing out that in society a white person calling a black person a ****** is deemed much worse than a black person calling a white person a cracker. Is that right? No of course not. But is it true? Yes, yes it is.
It wasn't clear at all that you didn't believe that.

If someone does not know you....then reading you post You can't call a black person a ******!! But it's perfectly acceptable if a black person calls you a cracker!!" would tend to make them think that you believe it.

It's always been my decision that if I post a statement made by someone or about something (and I do not agree with the posted statement)....then it is best to make note that I do not believe or endorse that statement....because someone will read it and think that you do.

Well I see what you are saying, but that's why I put it in the little " marks. To show that wasn't my opinion. I'm white anyway.

But it is true. If I went up on stage or on TV and started ranting "****** this and ****** that" I wouldn't make it home alive. But if a black bloke started going "Ohh cracker this and cracker that". Nothing would really happen, it wouldn't cause the same controversy as someone using the n word. Now, I'm not condoning the use of either. I'm just saying it the way it is, unfortunately.

We live in a double standard society.

It's still a racial slur, depending on whether it ends with "a" or "er," and the context it's used in. I've pretty much given up on being offended when Filipino-Americans say it. I don't say it, myself. I don't buy the whole "using it affectionately robs it of its power" thing, especially since we still take offense when white people try to say it in the same inoffensive context.

I swear we get the most random references

Hoy, man. I heard Filipinos say the N-word all throughout high school. I even hear it today. I went to a friend's birthday party last week, and one of his friends (we'll call him Fernandez) said the N-word around me the whole night like it was the thing to do, not realizing I might get offended by it until he finally started to sober up.

I used to have to lecture a Filipino about what the N-word means every five minutes when I was a kid. I'm sorry, but every time I've heard a non-black person say the N-word in person, it was someone of the Pinoy persuasion.

I guess I'm not surprised. There are plenty of those types of filipinos in the Bay Area. As our karaoke obsession somewhat shows, we're a people of imitation.

those filipinos you guys are talking about... me and my friend have no idea what to call em, but they are the ones that hang around for youtube fame and try to be ABAP (as black as possible)..... i think of them the same way white people think of guidos.

i know im hatin on my own kind, but goddam sometimes these clowns deserve it.

Sometimes you just gotta draw the line at Dante Basco. Anything "blacker" is just offensive.

Yes the N-word is a racial slur...I can't believe anybody would ask this question. Ofcourse it freakin is!

And you may not like it and see it as a double standered but if you are white you shouldn't be refering to any black person as the N-word. End of Story. I'm not saying that black people should use the word but they have more rights to it than white people because um....SLAVERY!

And the general oppression that still thrives to this day. Saying it's not as bad as some black people think, still doesn't change the fact that it is real.

So, because of what our ancestors did (not us, keep in mind), we're entitled to verbal beatdowns by the other races? They have no more right to it than we do. I'd prefer not to be harassed because my ancestors owned slaves. I don't believe in racism in the slightest- black, white, yellow, brown, whatever, I'll befriend 'em, I'll date 'em, I'll give them the clothes off of my back.

With that said, the same treatment will go for all colors should someone assault me, whether verbally or physically. You trash-talk me, I'll trash-talk back. You attack me, I'll smack you up until you either leave me alone, or can't fight back. I don't care what color you are, and to tell me that I'd have to allow a black person to berate me because of something my ancestors believed but I cannot stand in the slightest is just ignorant and stupid.

idk about that. i keep hearing about how that guy has urban flavor and i never got that vibe. but it also depends on where youre from. there are some asians born and raised in urban cities. those are the ones that dont try to act all hard or wear "abercrombie and hip hop" if you know what i mean. the asians you and me are talking about are the ones that are really from some safe little suburban neighborhood and try to act edgy when they are really just being corny.

(and this is all minus the N-word stuff we're talking here. asians should never ever use that. ha so cheesy when i think about it. its worse than when they say "sup mah chinks!" or "sup wit mah brown people in da house!")

saw your post and i think you quoted the wrong guy or wrong post. spidey was saying no one should use the n word, that black people have more entitlement to it if it comes down to it, and that the n word is definitely a racial slur. i dont think he said the double standard meant that it was ok to call someone a cracker but not the n word. i'm not getting which post you got that from.

i think mostly because there is an obvious difference between the manner the two people were using them. kramer was clearly being malicious about it. chapelle uses that term light heartedly as part of a comedy routine, people know its just a joke (thats not me condoning it, just saying). but i think whats clear is there's a bias, not only in the media, but in the general public. most people dont equate cracker as a racial slur, or at least nothing like they do with n***er.

Firstly, they were both used during comedy routines. There's no evidence in my mind that Kramer wasn't being light-hearted he just took it too far.

Secondly, there is a bias and that bias is, as far as I'm concerned, racism.

No he meant for it to poke fun at black people. Like Dave Chapelle pokes fun at white people.

Am I the only one who's noticed that a great percentage of black comedians concentrate a lot of their material on making fun of white people nowadays? I'm not offended by it, I just don't get why they do that so much, and then wonder why they never make it on HBO. A lot of it just isn't even that funny.

And it's not because I'm white... Hell, I think a lot of the jokes that Dave Chappelle and Chris Rock crack on white people are hilarious.

well they make fun of their own people too. but a lot of popular black comedians make fun of white people... when a big portion of their fans are white. i dont get it either.

I don't think it's that they make fun of their fanbase as much as it is that when white guys say racist things, it's overtly racist and aggressive... When black guys say it, it's [not] hilarious.

White guys can get away with racial humor without offending anyone. Bill Burr does it.

Yeah, to a certain extent... I hear these boundaries being broken more rarely by us whities than I do the black comedians... Especially without retaliation in some way.

yeah for some reason its ok for comedians. they are safely guarded by security.

if you're black: try calling a neo nazi in the south a "cracker" and see what happens

if you're white: try saying the "N word" to someone from the bloods, in the slums and see what happens

area and context are all important.
