Skyforge : Anomalies - High End Adventure

Posted May 17, 2015

The latest Skyforge developer diary has been published that details anomalies, high level adventures for up to five players. Each player will need to be a god, though not necessarily in a Pantheon. Party assembly can happen in a place called Tessa's Sanctuary where teleportation to an anomaly happens.
Once there, players are given a series of celestial quests that guide them to fight specific enemies that fuel the anomaly, all the while picking up rewards along the way. It appears these rewards are some form of currency that can be used immediately or over time. As the journey through the anomaly progresses, monsters become more difficult and yield greater rewards until ultimately the deepest depth is reached where the most dangerous enemies reside.
According the blog, the fight will take tactics and the careful use of resources. Find out more on the Skyforge site.

Skyforge : New Zone Revealed in Panoramic Image

Posted May 20, 2015

The Skyforge site has been updated with a new interactive panorama that features a look at the Veines zone. Similar to Google Street View, users can move the camera around a static point on the ground to get a look at the area.
Veines was once a peaceful town nestled in a valley surrounded by scenic dense forests and mountaintops. Now the settlement is ravaged by the merciless forces of the Reapers of Death, including the disgusting, rat-like Virds, which emerge from an underground network of burrows to attack the unwary and Immortals alike.
Check it out on the Skyforge site.

Skyforge : Dev Blog Outlines PvP Battles

Posted May 28, 2015

The new Skyforge Dev Blog shows us the game design behind Celestial Temples. This new PvP update will allow players to fight over several different battle ground designs.
sf_pantheons_screenshot_001.jpg

The Celestial Temples which Pantheons fight over, are complex structures, filled with enormous reserves of magical energy. Immortals have learned to collect this energy and use it to increase their own celestial powers, improving their stats and gaining additional bonuses to their might. However, these temples are sparse on Aelion and over the ages controlling the temples and thus, its magical energy, has turned into a competition between Pantheons, with all of Aelion’s young gods thirsting for knowledge and power fighting in these battles.
The topology and gameplay objectives of the battlefield depend on your role (Temple defender or attacker). 50 PvP players from each Pantheon will be divided between three PvP maps, grouped by type of gameplay: Capture and Hold (15v15); Capture the Flag (10v10); and "King of the Hill" (25v25). Both the PvP and PvE components of the fight determine the overall outcome of the war. The gods that join forces in these battles will have access to infinite power. But keep in mind that proving your strength only in one activity (for example, in the battles against other players) will not be enough to gain all the resources required to achieve victory. A Pantheon must be truly strong in both PvE and PvP to be victorious.

Kinetics are ranged damage dealers with a high mobility rate. They can deal high amounts of damage with powerful AoE attacks or take on a more supportive role with strong crowd control abilities. Not considered a strong class overall, the Kinetic's abilities work in harmony with other team members to rain havoc on the battlefield.

Skyforge : Community Manager Hints at July Open Beta

Posted Jun 09, 2015

According to a forum post on the Skyforge forum, it is very possible that open beta will hit sometime in July. According to Community Manager 'Spunky', there will be one more closed beta event prior to the commencement of the open beta.
Moderator Alanor wrote:
We've not received any official information on the subject. With the timeline we currently have of CBT4 this month and OBT sometime in Summer, I'd place my bet on OBT coming after CBT4 instead of a CBT5.

Keep an eye on the News section for more official information on future beta tests.
Community Manager Spunky responded to the above by saying:
Barring any unforeseen complications, CBT4 will be the last CBT event before OBT. That being said, the time difference between CBT4 and OBT will depend on how well CBT4 goes.

Skyforge : Next Closed Beta Event Dated for June 23-29

Posted Jun 11, 2015

My.com and Obsidian Entertainment have announced that the next Skyforge Closed Beta event will run from Jun 23rd through June 29th. Players will gain access to two more classes: The Knight and the Alchemist.
Players will be able to see in action several major changes made as a direct result of player feedback in previous closed beta tests.

  • (During the test only) Exclusive instant access to two high-tier classes, Knight and Alchemist – Players will get a chance to try two high tier classes available only in the upper ascension atlas: the Knight – a powerful tank class armed with a shield and spear, and the Alchemist – a half-mad scientist support class with mastery of corrosive chemical compounds and invigorating elixirs.
  • Client Optimization – The data collected during the previous CBTs helped to improve the game’s optimization and provide support for more configuration types. The maximum frames per second are now 30% higher than when beta testing began.
  • Orders and Followers – Since this is one of the most important parts of the game, the development team has put a lot of effort into improving the user experience and as a result, managing followers and their resources has been improved.
  • PVE and PVP adventures
    • Big changes were made for different aspects of gameplay. The difficulty level of adventures now can be chosen by the player after they’ve unlocked them. There will be no more prestige limitations between players who want to participate in adventures as a group, with players receiving rewards based on the range of the group’s prestige.
    • Grouping with others for adventures is now easier than ever, with recently vacated spots being automatically filled with new players during the adventure. Players can now automatically search for others interested in tackling PVE adventures, so if players don’t have a group they can choose to be matched with others automatically. For 5-man group adventures, pre-formed groups can now enter regardless of class makeup.
    • In PvP, the matchmaking system has optimized how players are grouped for battle in order to make it easier to find matches.
  • Ascension Atlas – The Ascension Atlas has been changed in order to promote a more streamlined experience, allowing the upper portions of the Atlas to be unlocked by players sooner, enabling them to more quickly progress towards other classes. The interface of the Ascension Atlas has also been changed to be much cleaner and easier to look at.
  • Classes
    • Along with the addition of three new classes, progression through each class has been streamlined to enable players to progress while still progressing through the upper layers of the Ascension Atlas.
    • Outside of the initial talents and abilities, classes now use their own unique class sparks to progress. This way you no longer need to choose between advancing one class or progressing towards others.
  • Pantheons – Pantheons are now available, allowing players to create their own or join others. Many of the features Pantheons provide will not be accessible in the timeframe of the closed beta test. Those will be in the upcoming open beta test!
  • Equipment – During previous closed beta tests players showed an interest in being able to acquire additional pieces of equipment. With that in mind, Amulets and Trophies have been added to the game to create four and two new equipment slots respectively.
  • Portal – Skyforge’s new, all-inclusive web interface, the portal, provides integration with the game, including a forum, chatting with players that are in the game, viewing player items or equipment, a talent calculator, managing your Order, and more. While not all of these features will be readily available during closed beta testing they will be made accessible during open beta testing.
  • UI – A large portion of the UI has seen changes to improve readability. Some of these changes include the Skill, Order, Equipment and Options menus.
  • Chat – The chat system is now more in line with the chat systems found in other games, resulting in a much simpler and user friendly chat experience.
  • Character creation – Character creation has seen many additions and general fine tuning for personalizing your character. Some of these additions include the ability to select a voice for your character and choose from a variety of facial tattoos.

Skyforge : How to Unlock New Classes in the Ascension Atlas

Posted Jul 10, 2015

Skyforge is now in early access for its Open Beta, meaning throngs of people who paid for founders packs are now playing what’s essentially the launch version of Allods Team’s and Obsidian’s Free to Play MMORPG. And if there’s one thing Skyforge does different from its predecessors, it’s the class system and its accompanying Ascension Atlas. Today, we’ll explain how and when you’ll unlock Skyforge’s many available classes.
Read on for the rest of our Guide on How to Unlock More Classes in Skyforge's Ascension Atlas.
[YT]5z1BvlMh3XY[/YT]
There are three base starting classes in Skyforge: the Lightbinder (support), the Paladin (tank), and the Cryomancer (DPS). If you’ve purchased a founder’s pack, you also get the Berserker and Gunner (both DPS) unlocked early so you don’t have to work towards them in the Ascension Atlas. And while you can unlock the upper level of the Ascension Atlas playing any class, you can only progress towards the other classes from one of the three base starter classes (Lightbinder, Paladin, and Cryomancer). These serve as the “core” of the Atlas, and where you spider out to unlock the game’s 10 other currently available classes.
Best advice? Pick a class from the three (or five if you’re a founder) you like the most and stick with it for a bit, at least until you unlock the upper Atlas level. When does that happen? At a point in every base class progression tree (see video below), you’ll unlock a node called “Path of (Class)”. Once you hit this node on your first class, you’ll unlock the upper Ascension Atlas, and the ability to progress towards all the other classes.
From there, it’s just a matter of time and choosing what node to go toward next. You can even handily right-click any class you want to aim for and hit "Find a Path" and the game will use a dark blue dotted line to show you how to get there.
Each class seems like miles away, but as long as you just keep playing the game, you’ll wind up getting enough Sparks and Badges (for class specific progression) to keep things moving. I’ve only just begun to delve further into Skyforge, as I avoided the beta due to the myriad performance issues and not wanting to spoil my review period and I’m glad I did. Obsidian’s and Allods’ new game is proving to be a pretty fun experience and I’m happy I missed out on the earlier less-content filled beta periods that everyone talks about. I’ve still had to repeat a couple of instances to progress the story, and the jury is out if this becomes a trend moving forward, but Skyforge is already a damn sight better than any other new MMO we’ve been treated to in 2015.

Skyforge : Review in Progress #1

Posted Jul 14, 2015

Skyforge is a bit of a dark horse. While I doubt the game will come away with accolades and throngs of fans attending cons to praise it, Obsidian Entertainment and Allods Team have doubtless crafted a unique and engaging MMORPG. I’ve been playing for about 15 hours so far, and while some things worry me, the most important part is there. Skyforge is accessible and fun, with loads of goals to work towards.
Read more of Bill Murphy's Skyforge: Review in Progress #1.
The cynical crowd will dismiss Skyforge as just another theme park MMO. Yep, it is. But look… you can play what you’re given and find the fun, or piss on everything and spend your days waiting. I’ll do the first one. Then, if they’re still bad, I’ll piss on them (metaphorically). Skyforge is indeed a content-driven theme-park MMORPG. But it does plenty different enough to spark my interest and keep me going a dozen hours in.

It should be noted that our founder’s packs have been provided by My.com, and I’m grateful, because I do think that Skyforge is a game where you’re going to want to pay if you plan on investing significant time. Let’s get this straight too: Skyforge is not pay-to-win (P2W). It’s pay to progress faster; simple as that. There are caps for every single player on how many sparks (essentially XP as a currency) you can gain, and paying customers will wind up hitting those caps faster. Subscriptions are optional, as is the purchase of the RMT currency Argents, but if you buy either you’ll be able to progress your character faster than others.
Does this translate to power? Yes, but it’s the same as buying an XP potion or skipping levels in other games. You’re not buying gear or permanent advantages. You’re taking a shortcut in progression from “level to level” (though there are no levels in Skyforge). It’s purely my opinion, but I see nothing wrong with this. When my founder’s time wears off, if I feel like seriously devoting time to Skyforge, I’ll likely become a “Premium Member” and subscribe for the very helpful boost in progress. I can’t comment what progression feels like without Premium status, but I’m betting it’s a little more sluggish and will require a good bit more repetition of content.
sf_kinetic_screenshot_01.jpg

The Kinetic is one of the game's many unlockable classes.
The game itself has proven to be really fun so far. In a lot of ways, Skyforge reminds me of Destiny if Bungie’s game were more MMORPG than Shooter. You have a hub world where everyone hangs out and coordinates (or spams chat with nonsense), and then you have larger open world zones where you can quest as you would in a traditional MMO. Though it’s worth noting there are no hubs or exclamation points, everything instead is handled sort of like Guild Wars 2’s events, though with more traditional “kill this or collect that” tasks. In between all of these, you’ll be spending your time in more small group or solo dungeon-like experiences. These are fairly straightforward early on. Kill trash, fight boss. Get loot and sparks (XP). But by the mid-2000s in prestige level (effectively the game’s way of rating your progress and overall godly power) you’re fighting some pretty intense boss fights. Solo they’re hard, and since they scale with the 3-man groups the game auto-matches you with, they’re still hard there too. The Paladin class or the Lightbringer can live longer, but don’t deal nearly as much damage, so you have to know what you’re best at playing and dive in.
One such boss is part of the storyline in Thais Temple. You have to learn his patterns and be quick with your dodges and know when to attack or you’ll die again and again. There’s a Mantide boss that calls rocks down from on high too, and unless you hide behind these when she charges an attack, you’ll get one-shot. It’s nothing intensely mind-wracking, but it’s really nice to be forced to play well and pay attention in an MMO. It’s been a while since that happened.
SF_Gunner_Screenshot.jpg

The gunner is unlocked for paying founders, but must be unlocked by free players.
Speaking of classes, it’s a really nice system that Obsidian and Allods have thought up. While you can eventually learn every class, at first you start with only a handful: support, tank, and DPS available. You can switch at will out of combat, and all of your gear except your weapons and amulets (obtained later on in the game) carry over. This effectively ties your power to your gear, not your class. You’ll want to keep your weapons up to par, which you can do by evolving the jewels tied to each weapon slot (not the weapon itself). So while you might not have the best sword on your Paladin because you haven’t played him in a while, you can still take care of business until you get a better weapon.
The only things you’ll miss out on when swapping classes are new skills and the stat bonuses that come from class specific atlas trees. It’s not been hard to keep my Prestige level at or around the same level when swapping classes between Paladin, Gunner, and Berserker.
There’s a big emphasis on story in Skyforge, but I’d say that it has been the game’s weakest link so far. There’s an invading force on Aelion (the planet you’re from and the planet you protect as an Immortal/aspiring God), and you’re trying to get to the bottom of it. Cinematics are done in-game, but are very basic and rely on the same few camera tricks. Likewise the voice acting is pretty bland and often-times doesn’t match the subtitles nor the characters’ lip movements (a result of Russian to English translation I’m sure). It’s not a bad story, and does what it needs to, but it’s certainly not why I’m playing.
Character creation was pretty impressive too, but once in-game I’m surprised to see how few outfits there really are. Since costumes do not effect stats, I was hoping to see a few more options, or the ability to really choose my own dyes and coloring. Instead it seems you’re beholden to the classes’ main costumes, some pretty lame “Aelion-inspired” clothing, and different shades of each. And yes, before anyone asks, there are jiggle-physics here too. Though at least the men have a butt-slider alongside the females’ breast slider. And really guys, do you all NEED to put that slider at maximum? Surely those things would get in the way of swinging your weapons.
SFCBT4.jpg

Skyforge definitely has its own style, that much is certain.
I’ve still got quite a lot to explore, from the Followers (basically your own Cabal of religious types who worship you and go on quests for you, a la SWTOR or Neverwinter), to the more organized PVP and Pantheon (guild) dynamics. Right now I’ve played solo a lot, grouped equally as much due to the simple and easy group-finder from the game’s overworld map, and done just one FFA PVP match… which I lost, badly.
I also want to touch on performance. I have a pretty great rig at home (see below) able to run Witcher 3 on Ultra, and my laptop isn't too shabby either, able to run Arkham Knight and Witcher 3 on Medium to High. But while I can run on High (not Max) via the game's recommended settings, I only get somewhere between 20 to 40 FPS. If I'm in a solo instance, it can climb higher, but it's very unstable. On top of that, I've had quite a few crashes on the desktop (though none on the laptop). In short, while Skyforge has become far better in terms of performance since early betas, it's still got a long way to go. It's a sexy game, but when you see folks with 980Ti's and new i7's complaining of 20 FPS in chat, you know something is up.
MMO gamers looking for something revolutionary or more open-world sanboxy won’t find a lot to enjoy here. However, it’s ideal for short-session play but can be delved into for hours as well. I’ll be diving in for loads more over the next few weeks and hope to have a final review done before the end of July or at least early August. So if you liked Neverwinter, or Destiny, and enjoy pretty games with loads of progression, I’d give this one a shot when it hits Open Beta officially on the 16th. It’s too soon to say how long I’ll enjoy myself, but it’s definitely the best of the recent batch of F2P MMOs (excluding Trove, whicj came out in my book back in 2014).
System Specs:

  • Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2500K CPU @ 3.30GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.6GHz
  • Memory: 16GB GSkill DDR3 RAM
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68X
  • Storage: Samsung 840 EVO SSD 500GB

Don’t get me wrong, Skyforge is a pretty fun game, but it’s obviously flawed in so many ways. So much so that my desire to keep plugging away at the Ascension Atlas, repetition be damned, is something that boggles my mind whenever I click play.
Read more of Michael Bitton's My Love/Hate Relationship with Skyforge.
I’ve developed a sort of love/hate relationship with Skyforge as of late. The game piqued my curiosity when I first saw it a while back, but as I played through the various beta phases, my interest waned. Oddly enough, once open beta rolled around and I could play in confidence without fear of my progress being wiped, the game somehow dug its hooks into me in a way I didn’t expect. Don’t get me wrong, Skyforge is a pretty fun game, but it’s obviously flawed in so many ways. So much so that my desire to keep plugging away at the Ascension Atlas, repetition be damned, is something that boggles my mind whenever I click play.

Maybe it’s my obsessive compulsion to want to complete everything. I don’t know. There are plenty of games on the market that do what Skyforge does and none of them have held my interest. Hub based games full of repetitive dungeon runs such as Vindictus, Dragon’s Nest, Warframe, and the like are all fine for a certain subset of the MMO playing populace, but these have just never been for me. Yet here I am, running the same crap over and over trying to ensure I’ve hit S-Rank so I can get the most out of the resources I can acquire each run. Bill did a great job at highlighting some of the game’s myriad issues earlier this week, but I wanted to follow up with a few of my own, and what the game’s developers can do to address them.
Better Tutorials
Skyforge is needlessly complex in many ways and the game doesn’t really do a good job at introducing you to it all. There’s so much to digest in terms of how gearing works, the bazillion different stats and currencies that affect your character, the nuances of progression, and the importance of your Order, that it can all feel fairly overwhelming. If you aren’t committed to doing your research and making sense of the jumbled mess of a game, you may be in for a bad time.
Elite: Dangerous is another game with some fairly complex systems, but the folks at Frontier Developments often put out tutorial videos that do a great job at helping you get acclimated with the game’s more granular features. I feel like some heavy handholding and videos would go a long way at helping players understand some of Skyforge’s more obtuse quirks and features.
SFCBT4.jpg

Itemization
On the surface, it looks like there’s a lot going on with all the complex statistics (Tactical Sense and Solidity? Really?) and choices, but once you really dig into the game, you realize it’s all pretty simple, and in some cases, broken. For example, you might start gearing your character looking for items that boost your Prestige (Skyforge’s best approximation of your “level”), but this isn’t actually optimal. Bonuses to skills you use and a fairly universal trifecta of Strength, Luck, and Critical Chance are really all you need to look for on gear no matter what class you’re playing (except for tanks, who value Stamina for obvious reasons).
Prioritizing the Might and Prestige of a new weapon you’ve picked up over other things will actually hurt you. Might is essentially a useless stat right now, but it’s often put front and center in the game. There are a huge number of stats in Skyforge and it’s nothing if not ironic that most of them are seemingly irrelevant in a game that focuses on choosing your path on a giant grid of stat bonuses and different classes. The developers could stand to condense the ridiculous number of stats and improve the major ones such that making choices is important from class to class and on the Ascension Atlas.
Visual itemization is also a bit lacking. I don’t mind the costume system too much in terms of determining your overall look, but it’s fairly disappointing to pick up new weapons and offhand items that mostly look alike.
skyforge_gamescom_wrap_archer_t.jpg

Balance
Game balance is an ongoing issue for just about every game out there, but the issue is highlighted in Skyforge for a number of reasons. For one, unlocking classes is gated behind a huge grind as Bill mentioned recently, so finding out that the class you picked sucks can be a real downer, especially if you disliked playing as the three starter classes in order to get to it. On top of that, some classes appear to have dramatically different experiences in content than others.
Playing a squishier class like a Witch or Slayer, I expect to take more damage, but the survival disparity between playing these squishier classes vs. playing some of the tougher ones is often incredibly punishing. Slayers, for example, are great in PvP, but if the game offers me a mission where I can get a double or triple resource bonus for playing the class in a PvE mission, I will often decline and choose something worth less. Why? Because I could likely complete that mission three or four times before I’d be able to finish it once on some of the squishier classes.
To make matters worse, I get the feeling that the game is OK with this sort of dynamic. I feel as if the design is trying to tell me that some classes are better in certain activities than others and I should be OK with the notion that I might want to switch to X or Y classes for a particular piece of content. While I appreciate the game’s flexibility in allowing me to do this, maybe I only want to play one or two classes because those are the classes that interest me. However, if those classes aren’t so hot in what I’m looking to do, I may be SOL if the developers lean on the game’s class flexibility to band-aid over the issue.
Oh, and for the love of god, remove executes from PvP. They’re ridiculous.
Alchemist.jpg

Performance
Performance leaves much to be desired in the game right now. The game is poorly optimized or they have a memory leak going on or perhaps both, but framerates tend to nosedive pretty quickly in most areas even on powerful systems and this needs to be addressed sooner rather than later.

Bonus: Consolidate the Currencies!
The amount of currencies in Skyforge is simply obscene. There are at least 23 different currencies! I thought about listing most of them here, but my mind began to melt as I began typing it out. Let’s just say you will be beyond confused when you first lay eyes on the game’s Currency tab. If you thought you couldn’t make sense of the 20 or more stats for your character, you’re gonna have even more fun mousing over all the various currencies to learn what they are for. Most of these currencies have weekly caps, too. And when you hit those caps, you earn entirely different currencies in their place until the caps reset.
The game doesn’t need this many currencies. Simplify it.

Skyforge : Obsidian Says Spark Limits Are Not the End of Progression

Posted Jul 22, 2015

A new blog post has been published on the Skyforge site to give players insight into how they can effectively double the weekly spark limit by accessing the Order, a source of player strength as measured by Prestige. According to the post, Order is often overlooked by players, but that it is essential for its many statistical bonuses.
Adept missions are divided into three distinct types:

  • “Yellow” for Gathering Resources (Supplies and Ammo)
  • “Blue for spending Supplies to bring in more followers and earn charms
  • “Red” for spending Ammo or Supplies to gain Gifts from those you’ve helped
To send your Adepts on more rewarding missions it is necessary to obtain resources from “Yellow” Gathering Resource missions followed by spending them on “Red” Combat missions or “Blue” Order Development missions. However, the resources you earn from Yellow missions will become scarcer the more Blue or Red missions you decide to take on, requiring you to obtain more resources from outside the Order. To help cover this difference players are capable of completing Adventures in exchange for Ammo and Supplies after reaching certain resource limits.
Developers are actively monitoring threads about weekly spark limits and simultaneously creating a more intuitive and easily-understood interface to ensure players are taking advantage of the Order mechanic.

Skyforge : Server Upgrades to be Implemented to Fight NA Server Issues

Posted Jul 23, 2015

The Skyforge team has posted a brief note to let North American players know that they are aware of server load issues, queues, drop outs, and "significant lag". To fight these problematic issues, server maintenance has already been completed and new upgrades will be deployed over the next several days.
Until these upgrades are complete, players may experience occasional queues while attempting to sign into Skyforge. After these issues have been resolved, we’ll be awarding everyone with a special in-game gift to thank players for their ongoing patience and understanding as the team weathers these growing pains.

Skyforge : Party & Pantheon Features Coming in First Major Update

Posted Jul 27, 2015

The Skyforge site has been updated with the news that the first major content patch since the commencement of open beta testing earlier this month will be deployed soon. Of most notable interest to players will be the arrival of group play among allies and Pantheon members.
Pantheons will be able to find special "distortions" from within the divine observatory that will allow up to ten players to jump right into the action in the enemies' location. Players will face off against four foes, each one stronger than the last.
All players will be able to take part in Invasions where the enemy goes on the offensive against all of the world's inhabitants. These will be large-scale events that can take place anywhere in the world with multiple stages that allow "significant progress through the Divine Atlas due to rewards and bonuses" that our outside the normal weekly limits.
Anomalies will also be featured for up to five players in a large area. Multiple groups can also access the same anomalies, each with their own opportunity to score an Ether Resonator that can be turned in for Sparks or for Epic rewards.
Raids will allow up to ten Gods to take on the strongest enemies in the game that are designed to be the most significant challenge in PvE.
Players will also be able to unlock their Divine Form, a feat that will require around 30,500 Prestige.
Lastly, the update will feature Aelinet improvements.
There is no ETA on when the patch will go live but the team will get it into player hands as soon as possible.

Skyforge : Review in Progress - My Ascension Slows

Posted Jul 29, 2015

My epic ascension to god-hood slowed down this week. The reason was twofold. On one hand, I had to review Kyn (a fun little Indie RPG), but on the other hand I was actually very glad to take a break from Skyforge. After putting in over 40 hours since Open Beta Head Start, the repetitive nature of Skyforge’s content is starting to get to me.
Read more of Bill Murphy's Skyforge - Review in Progress - My Ascension Slows.
As many have reported on the forums before me, after several hours into the game, you start to realize just how much Obsidian and Allods Team expect you to repeat missions in order to progress. I’ve said before that Skyforge is like Destiny, and that’s both for good and for bad. It’s good, as long as you’re playing other games and just mixing Skyforge into your rotation. But if you’re playing only Skyforge, you’re likely to find yourself frustrated and smacking your head against the wall when you’re asked yet again to go back to Factory 501.
There’s no variation to the content of Skyforge, and that perhaps is the biggest flaw in its design. Repeating areas wouldn’t be so bad if there was some sense of random layout to them. You are given little minor “bonus objectives” each time you go into an adventure, but that’s hardly the kind of variation I’m talking about. No instead you’ll be spending countless hours running the same areas again and again, and often are tasked to play through places you might not enjoy to get the most out of your sparks-earning.

Wanna be a weirdo? Costumes allow that, if not much else.
I do still like the progression model. And while I would love a shortcut to unlock classes (seriously, I’m not the only one who would pay for these), I’ve settled into playing what I like and worrying about unlocking others down the road in the far future. With that ideal in mind, simply playing the game and getting one class more powerful is a joy. But there’s something I do wish the devs would address: why does every weapon look the same?
I can stand the fact that costumes are the main way to differentiate yourself visually from others, though I do wish there were more options here too. But as a visual person, and being used to visually appealing gear as a part of MMOs, it’s always a little bit of a letdown when I get a new weapon that looks just like every other weapon. For a game with such fantastic art direction, the team sure did skimp on the finer points.
I also want to mention that I really liked the Daily Login rewards for the first week, however broken that was. This little addition, basically free sparks, free currency, or whatever the day’s login reward was, made sure I logged in. And once I logged in, I played. It’s something a lot of F2P or B2P games institute, and I hope the devs bring it back for a more permanent feature.

SFRIP-2_t.jpg

This was like the nine millionth time I’ve killed this guy. Also, I think it’s important to mention that any MMO which needs a Reddit Thread like this to help people along is probably not doing a very good job at explaining its own systems.
Lastly for this week, Skyforge needs to find itself some more down-time activities. Adept Missions and Managing your order alone are not enough. These amount to a Facebook game, and while they’d be awesome to have access to while offline (like Neverwinter’s followers), they’re not the kind of thing you can really devote time towards. Skyforge doesn’t have any sort of crafting, and perhaps they don’t plan on adding it in, but there’s just so very little to do beyond queuing up for the next mission and killing things over and over again. One could argue this is true of a lot of MMOs, but other MMOs give you plenty of chances to stop and smell the roses. Skyforge seems hellbent on just keeping you grinding those sparks away, hoping you won’t realize there’s no real point to what you’re doing beyond raising that arbitrary prestige number.
And that’s the most difficult thing to change in an MMO. These games need to be good at disguising the grind. They need to give you as reason to fight, goals to work towards. And while classes and the eventual god mode loom above you, the story and repetitive nature of tasks wind up making me feel like I’m a rat in a skinner box. Of course, lots of RPGs and MMOs give this sensation, but for some reason it’s a more enjoyable experience in Diablo or even Destiny. That I can’t quite put a finger on: maybe I’ve just become too hard to please, or maybe Skyforge’s grind is a bit more obvious. Either way, it’s not something I willingly want to devote time to these days.
Wanna be a weirdo? Costumes allow that, if not much else.
And that’s a shame. Because I was looking forward to becoming a god.

Skyforge : Prestige Scaling Detailed

Posted Aug 04, 2015

The Skyforge site has been updated with a new preview post for the Crucible of the Gods update that is scheduled to go live later this month. of particular note is the topic of "prestige scaling" that will allow players to work together to earn prestige. Groups will scale down to the lowest prestige group member and awards all players appropriate rewards for prestige.
The method of joining an Adventure remains the same, however the Interface’s functionality has been slightly altered to accommodate this new feature. Selecting Join functions the same as its current form, allowing participation by a solo player or a pre-formed group but the groups will remain limited by how far apart their member’s prestige currently is. Additionally, the difficulty can be manually chosen. Selecting Group Finder allows participation with a random or pre-formed group of players. The varying prestige is not taken into account and lower prestige members will receive the enhancing effect and the difficulty will not exceed “Normal”.

Skyforge patch starts V-Day event, adds souped-up screenshot feature

February 11, 2016 3 Comments

Tired of seeing red hearts and pink frosting everywhere you go this month? Then you better avoid Skyforge with a passion, as the game is kicking off its Mysteries of Love event today. In it, players can earn event currency by dealing with an amorous dryad, play cupid, or hand out Valentine’s Day cards (aw).

The event comes hand-in-hand with the March of Knowledge patch, which has also gone live. This huge content update includes a really neat photomode that will help players take intense screenshots, a new hostile territory area, the laboratory feature, more pantheon wars options, an urgent call system for invasion, and legendary ancient rings. Naturally, you’ll want to read the full patch notes for all of the details.
If you’re not quite as weary of the lovey-dovey season (or harbor a secret fondness for it), you can check out Skyforge’s love story after the jump.

Check out the full arsenal of Skyforge’s Knight

March 2, 2016 4 Comments

Even in sci-fi realms, it’s near impossible for video game designers to divorce themselves from fantasy tropes. That’s why it’s surprising, but not really, for traditional fantasy classes like the Knight to be making leaps to games like Skyforge.

Of course, the Knight isn’t quite like your renaissance faire hero of old. It uses some high-tech gadgetry along with its suit of armor, shield, and spear, and seems to have a scary fire-falcon as a pet.

Skyforge is spotlighting the Knight this week in its own trailer, which takes players through the class’ various skills and abilities. If we can sell you on the trailer, how about some lore to go with it? There’s a new piece about the Tau Experimental Station that’s dying for some hotshot to dissect it for his or her Ph.D. thesis.

The Knight is waiting for you after the jump. Do you dare approach it?
