300 director Zack Snyder has set up the first project at his new company, Cruel and Unusual Films - an action fantasy titled Sucker Punch.

Snyder, who is eyeing the project as a directing vehicle, will produce with partner and wife Deborah Snyder. Snyder will co-write the script with Steve Shibuya, adapting it from his own original short story.

Set in the 1950's, "Punch" follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

"A while ago I had written a script for myself and there was a sequence in it that made me think, 'How can I make a film that can have action sequences in it that aren't limited by the physical realities that normal people are limited by, but still have the story make sense so it's not, and I don't mean to be mean, like a bull***** thing like "Ultraviolet" or something like that?' " Snyder said. "And also, I was really inspired by the worlds of movies like 'Moulin Rouge,' which is modern but at the same time timeless."

Snyder described the world as "an 'Alice in Wonderland' with machine guns," blending such elements as dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels. Music will play a key role.

"In the end, it's about this girl's survival and what she needs to do to be able to cope," Deborah Snyder said.

Snyder is in pre-production on Watchmen, the adaptation of the Alan Moore-Dave Gibbons graphic novel. Watchmen is eyeing a late summer start.

if you are a Snyder fan then this is not true. if you are not a fan then you belive the story.

These test screening can be a lot of crap though, they chaged the ending to 'I am Legend' because it did not test well, and the original ending they changed is superb. the ending they replaced it with is so bad, I am quite angry that is the version people will see every time it is shown on television(they put the original cut on the 2 dvd set).

and Superman was a rushed script, so i am not surpirised they are still working on the third act.

The article does seem like it is looking for reaons to give a negative spin on the golden boy, i mean, from most reports i read, his cg owl movie was very good, it did alright at the Box Office even though it did not become a cultural phenomenon. and they are making out like it was a failure.
Watchemen was a good adpatation of the work too, he put a lot of work into that and fought for it to retain the 85 setting, he will do well with Superman.

Slashfilm is tring to give it a negative spin? no way.

and the Owl movie did not good at the BO since it was a kids movie and in 3D.

Reviews doesnt affect Snyder-films. They are always awesome!

exactly i dont care what some critics say watchmen got some lukewarm reviews and a 64 RT Rating and it was my favorite film of 2009.

i am going in expecting a balls to the wall action/fantasy film and that is what i am gonna get i am not going in with some pre conceived notion that this is gonna be some deep character drama with a extremely smart narrative and riveting dialogue.

i just want an action movie and snyder is promoting it as such and that is what i believe i am gonna get

It made money right? It was not a flop, and it got good reviews. they say nothing at all about the actual quality of the movie, just a vague description of it 'flying silently into the distance.', meaning it made no great impact on the BO.

That is what makes me feel like it is deliberately looking to put a negative spin on the guy for the sake of a story, as in, 'everyone is expecting great things from this, guy, but we have the real scoop, he is getting crap!' lol
If they had said, the owl flick got good reviews, but did not do as well at the BO as expected, *then* it would have been a balanced look at his career, and not gave off the vibe of doommongering for the sake of a story.

edit: and another thing, a lot of superhero movies have weak third acts/last acts, X2's is not as good as the preceding 2/3rds, Batman Begins too, and they are two of the best sh films ever made. Again, i am not surprised the Superman script, which was rushed, has some problems in that area, but they can be fixed in time.

.
if you make 50 cent you also made money. they didnt make enough money.

there is no way that the Owl movie cost under 100 million. no logic. there is no way that it was under 120.

I don't know the numbers offhand, but i read them a while back , can't recall.

In any case they did not talk about the quality of the movie itself as a work of art, and that is probably more relevant than BO, because a Superman movie will automatically get more attention than some CG Owl movie, and make BO profit automatically(just as the boring ass SR did). So the question is really about Snyder's work as an artist, not as a money making machine, as the article takes the spin of 'is this guy really right for the Superman movie?'. That is what they should have focused on, the artistic quality of the owl flick, and the fact they said *nothing* in regards to that makes it seem like a doom-mongering article, and biased against him.

and as for the test screening....as project said, this will be an all out action movie, it will probably be like an adult cartoon brought to life, ott craziness and fun. The suits at WB may not 'get it', so to speak, and who knows who their source is, that could be biased exageration too, or going by the tone of the article, they could be biased and exagerating what the source told them as well. Anything less than an all round, 'this movie was amazing' on their very first viewing, could be spun into, 'the execs did not like it much.' Or it could be a rumour, or one vague opinion given, that has spun out of control, and is not a true reflection at all. In any case, the guy has made three of the best action movies of the last decade imo, and I highly doubt he has made anything that will be less than fantastic. That article does show lots tell tale signs of being highly biased against him.

Sucker Punch strikes me as a movie that would test poorly whether it was good or bad. It seems way too out-there for the GA. It appeals to a studio on paper, because it feels like it was written by an adolescent boy who just hit puberty, and that's kind of the appeal. But I can't imagine that a movie defined by it's refusal to make any sense would test well.

Considering the treatment that the GA gave to Scott Pilgrim, I've come to the conclusion that they are idiots and that Sucker Punch will bomb because it's just too good for them to comprehend.

^I have a feeling it will do similar to Scott Pilgrim, which was a little gem of a film.

I am feeling Watchmen deja vu, but this movie is based around a bunch of hot young actresses. Hello Vanessa...call me.

Might do better than you all expect.

Exactly... this looks like one awesome f***ing movie... with hot girls kicking ass, dragons, samurai demons, futuristic cities, castles, orcs, zombie nazis and giant robots. What could be more awesome than that?

Not everything has to be some Oscar nominated slop.
