So close

Connery IS Bond. That being said, I loved Craig.

Imagine how much more of an overt badass connery would be if, in his prime, he made the movie with today's more liberal movie making style, in regards to sex and violence.

You don't have to change my mind. The proof is in the pudding so to speak.

Ian Fleming based James Bond on a young Hoagy Carmichael.

Daniel Craig:

Bond is cold and ruthless, but he is very far from the pugilist look of Craig.

But these Spies don't exsist anymore in this mordern world so thats a bad comparison.

I thought Craig was a great Bond acting-wise but yeah, looks-wise he's kinda average with a good body. But still, he was fabulous and pwns Brosnan, Dalton and Moore.

Casino Royale brought me back to the old days.

I love it.

Well connery does call woman *****es in his movies plus, if i remeber right, he slapped a few. Does anyone wanna see Craig's Bond doing the same thing, routinely?

He slaps, as does Moore, but I don't think he says, "b*tch." That wasn't a common insult in the 60's.

I specifically remember Bond calling a woman "you stupid b*tch" in Dr.No when they were abroad the oil tanker/rig/boat(?).

Well, 007 has done some crazy stuff.

Didn't Moore's Bond technically sexually assault Octopussy? Not to mention he tricked Solitaire into giving up her cherry to him.

The only time I could see him as Bond would have had to be at the end. Intentional? I dunno. But that's me.

I agree I think it was supposed to be like that. Bond is a noob 00 agent in this one at the end he is the Bond we all know & love

ConneryBond calls Tiffany Case that in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. Fleming's Bond used the word more frequently.

No we will not see Craig be more like Brosnan or Connery. He will be different than in CR-less reckless and arrogant to the point where he messes up, but he will still be Craig's Bond.
Yeah. People are overstating the whole "he's not Bond in CASINO ROYALE" thing. That was James Bond, people, and that's how Craig's going to approach the role in future installments. The character arc of him becoming Bond had to do with his emotional hardening, but not any serious personality modification. For all intents and purposes, what you saw is what you get with Craig, take it or leave it.

I loved Daniel Craig.
IMO, Connery was great, but Craig IS Bond, now.

Anyway, Casino Royale was a masterpiece.
It was finally the Bond movie that I as waiting for. IMO, it trumps Goldeneye, big time. Casino Royale might well be my favorite Bond movie. I haven't seen Goldfinger, so I am not too sure yet.

DA Harvey Dent said:
Let me preface my CR review by saying that Goldfinger with Connery as Bond is my #1 Bond film of all time. IMO Connery was the prototypical Bond. He had it all - the good looks, the charisma, the ruthlessness.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:

CR was a great film and it had everything a Bond film should have - simplified dialogue, gratuitious violence, wide shots of Bond with his trademark "blue steel" expression, torture scene with and F-you manner from Bond, wrecked Aston Martin, easy women, etc.

But alas, CR was lacking one thing - namely James Bond himself. Now I was never a fan of Craig from the beginning. But I gave him the benefit of the doubt going into seeing CR. Given the positive reviews I figured while Craig may not have the good looks, he must have the charisma and ruthlessness of Bond. Well, He DOES have the ruthlessness. But he has ZERO charisma and lacks the good looks that epitomize James Bond. Le Chiffre, Le Chiffre's assistant, M's assistant, heck even the chinaman with the ponytail at the poker table looked more like James Bond than Daniel Craig.

Now, I know some of you may say, "Harvey, this is a reboot, Bond isn't established yet and thus he's rough around the edges." I can see that view, however take for instance Batman Begins. This was a reboot of the franchise and although it was grounded in reality, Bruce Wayne/Batman in Begins was never far removed from his portrait in the source material. Even without Bale's skilled acting and dedication to the role, he still LOOKED the part whereas Craig does not.

Ulitmately, CR does succeed in setting back the dial on the franchise but not completely. The franchise has a new direction, all it needs is a new bond. Close but no cigar.

Agreed.

i'll gladly say that i would never want Bond to look like that...

...and i'm sure Flemming changed his mind (probably more than once) about how he envisioned James Bond to look since he commisioned an artist to make this sketch based off of his description of Bond.

225px-Fleming007impression.jpg

this sketch looks a heck of a lot like Mr. Craig, imo.

at any rate, Flemming originally didn't want Connery as Bond because of his looks, but saw that Connery represented his character well so he went along with it. this shows that even Flemming didn't have a set idea of what Bond's face should look like.

i'm glad you liked the movie, DA...but i've come to the realization that bias too often gets in the way of our sight and unfortunately clouds our judgement. there are people who can prejudge and still see the light and there are some who prejudge and don't WANT to see the light (always looking for the negatives). in the case of Daniel Craig, i'd say you were the latter.

i'm not saying there's anything wrong with that. it's just that most of the people here who either gave Craig a chance or admit they were wrong about Craig WANTED to like Craig. i don't get that same feeling from you.

You know who I immediately saw in that sketch when I first glanced at it as I scrolled down this page? Roger Moore, of all people. Fascinating stuff. Thanks for sharing the sketch.

no problem, it's on wikipedia. oddly enough...i DO see Roger Moore in that sketch also. probably because Moore has a long, thin face and so does Bond in that sketch. but his eyes and angular facial features definitely remind me of Craig as well.

not me IMO its goes "too far" you have to have that balance of all the bonds

connery-cold
moore- humorous
dalton-strict but a romantic
brosnan- "just wanna have some fun"

although craig called vesper a bloody idiot and called her a B!tch.........oh nvm anymore -_-

I feel so bad for you, man. You're gonna be so disappointed when Craig's 2nd film is released. You have to understand that this is an origin film of sorts. Bond was different in his first mission. He learned a lot and that will shape him into the Bond we all know and love. In Craig's 2nd film we'll see a Bond similar to that of Connery and Brosnan. Just wait and see.

Secondly, Connery was a badass. You just think he isn't cause he wasn't beating people up in a bathroom or chasing someone through a construction site.

Connery was a badass in his own way. Simple as that.

I don't know if the next film will be as close as some people think to past movie Bonds. From what many people and reviews have been saying, it seems that Craig's Bond is the closest to Ian Flemming's book version (which really makes me want to read the books) namely because Flemming's Bond (from what I've read on other sites) was more ruthless, and lacked the gadgets and was more realistic then the movies. All of which I like, because I've never liked the other Bond movies, because they seemed too unrealistic to me and focused too much on the gadgets then having a firm plot, in my opinon anyways.

But my point being, if this series is steering more towards the being like the book Bond, the next few Bond movies may be more different then we think.

I just got back from the gym and a really hot girl that works there mentioned the movie and I started listening to her and she said and I quote, "he looks like an old guy in the previews, but man is he soooo hot".

So I think Craig does have something going for him.

Ya, lots of girls at my school are saying the same thing.

So Close sucked. I think it was you who recommended it to me a long time ago, and I actually went out and bought it. It was a waste of $25. Your taste sucks and I was an idiot for trusting you.

Anyone who says Craig is better than Connery should never speak again.

I've read that too many times today.

With that said he was an excellent Bond and while IMO not quite as good as Brosnan, he has time to refine his portrayal and smooth the edges, because afterall for over half the film he is just a thug though.

Connery's Bond was hard to watch during the fight scenes. Looked like an old man blindly throwing punches.
