So I just bought the long halloween

I've kind of wanted to read arkham asylum but alot of people claimed it was bad storytelling. I guess I'm going to have to give in and find out myself.

Arkham Asylum is great. Great story by Grant Morrison and the art by Dave Mckean is...out of this world. Here's a sample...

I'm really liking the look of it. I think if everything in the book looks that unique that I might buy it for the art alone. I've been told that it's actually somewhat disturbing at parts as well and that interests me. I don't think I have to worry with this being sold out like I do with Dark Victory as there were about 20 copies of arkham asylum when I bought haunted knight so I'll definitely be getting it next time I'm go up towards borders (it's about 2 hours away so I don't get to go much.)

It's probably the most disturbing Batman story I've ever read. It's more like a horror tale really.

I recommend that new readers to Batman start out with TLH also Dark Victory and Year One.

I'd second that. Batman Begins reignited my love of all things Batman and shortly after I picked up the comics you mentioned along with The Killing Joke. I also picked up Arkham Asylum: A Serious House On Serious Earth, which remains my favourite comic book ever. Not saying it's the best by a long shot, but my personal favourite.

Arkham Asylum was good. It's not really in keeping with my personal style but at the same time I think it's in a class all it's own.

In art schools where they focus on story telling teachers have used Arkham Asylum as a template of how NOT to tell a story.

That artwork for Arkham Asylum looks awesome. I need to check that one out too.

I haven't been out to borders but my cousin let me borrow his copy of the man who laughs. I just finished it and really enjoyed it. I didn't read the second story included so I don't have anything to say about it but the man who laughs was great and makes me really want to get the killing joke now.

Maybe because half the time(thanks to Mckeans out of this world art and Grants storytelling crazier than Naked Lunch) nobody can understand what the hell is going on. That was my only problem. Thank god they included a script to the anniversary edition.

You have to love Two-Face's story arc in Arkham Asylum. That is just a great book all the way around.

Here are some of my personal favorites for Batman trade paperbacks/graphic novels (in no particular order):

The Dark Knight Returns
Year One
The Killing Joke
Year Two
Son of the Demon
The Cult
A Death in the Family
Arkham Asylum
Night Cries
Gotham By Gaslight
Holy Terror
The Long Halloween
Dark Victory
Batman/Dracula: Red Rain
Blind Justice
Strange Apparitions
Hush
Poison Tomorrow
Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams Vol. 1,2,3
Batman Archive Editions
Dark Knight Archive Editions
Showcase Presents: Batman/The Brave and the Bold Editions

There are a ton more, but these are a nice start for anyone getting into Batman. I always look for good writer/artist team-ups like Denny O'Neil/Neal Adams, Frank Miller/Klaus Janson, Mike W. Barr or Jim Starlin/Jim Aparo, Alan Grant/Norm Breyfogle, Jeph Loeb/Tim Sale, Steve Englehart/Marshall Rogers, and of course, Bill Finger/Bob Kane.

just bought n read TLH and its true.. it reads like a movie.. very very good stuff... so DV next huh???
and why is Year One a must read?

I just received Haunted Knight in the mail today, and can't wait to start reading it. I've grown very partial to Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's Batman stuff. TLH will do that to you. :woot:

On my way to go buy Dark Victory and it BETTER be good! lol

I love the Loeb/Sale collaborations. To be honest, the only graphic novels/comics I own are their three Batman pieces -- TLH, DV, and HK. Haunted Knight isn't at the same level as TLH and DV but you'll still enjoy it.

It's great. It's the second half of The Long Halloween.

well i thought TLH was VERRRRRY good.. but i went through it pretty fast.. i hate that..lol

It's a great read, but it lacks the depth in storytelling that made TLH and DV so memorable, but that's probably because Haunted Knight is three short stories that have little to do with one another.

but the feeling i get from posts on here about HK is that its a pass.. is it really sappy? any good page caps like how ppl post pics of TLH or DV?

If you guys like Loeb/Sale Batman stories, you guys should definitely pick up Superman For All Seasons.

I heard I should get all Seasons, but I really really don't like Superman. I did love Red Son though
