Ant-Man So, I'm a casual, why should I be excited for this?

No worries bro I'm with you. :highfive:

Yeah, because its not like casting Robert Redford worked out for TWS.
Oh wait..

I just get a kick out of big star vs little star vs whatever.

It's marketed now as "Marvel's" blah blah. Because they want good actors for the roles, no matter where they have to go. RDJ was washed up, Hemsworth was a nobody, Evans was the Human Torch, ScarJo was ScarJo, SLJ is a badass to be king of badasses, etc. There's no real care for big name or little name -- as long as they do the character justice.

*Christian Bale voice* Right. Just make the bloody movie!

What Culture did a five Reasons To Take Ant-Man Seriously article.

Here are a few of the highlights

Infinite Arsenal
23076.jpg

People often forget that the source of Ant-Man’s powers is a chemical known as ‘Pym Particles’, which can shrink ANYTHING, not just Ant-Man himself. As a result of this, Ant-Man often carries a number of useful items with him inside a device called a toolbot, shrinking them to microscopic size so that he can keep them close at all times.

The amount that Batman holds in his utility belt may seem unrealistic, but Ant-Man can hold ten times more equipment than that without even noticing the weight. In the comics, Hank Pym has used the shrinking Pym particles to store items such as a ship, a minicomputer, chainsaw, tent, guns and even a freaking energy sword which are all readily accessible for any given situation. That’s pretty impressive, but there’s certainly scope to be even more imaginative with this ability, both within the comics and the movie.
Imagine the possibilities…

This infinite arsenal could contain literally anything the writers can come up with. A nuclear bomb could be carried safely within his pocket. Sure, it sounds risky, but you never know when a WMD may come in handy. Bet you’d think twice before facing a miniature superhero with a weapon of mass destruction hidden in his pocket…

Surprisingly Powerful

Ignoring the fact that the original Ant-Man could also grow to the size of a house and literally step on his enemies, the ability to shrink is far more powerful than people give it credit for.

Ant-Man’s ability to shrink down to the sub-atomic level potentially allows him to change things at the molecular level… that’s a god-like power right there! In a particularly inspired story, Lang once used this ability to cure the Hulk of a disease by entering his actual DNA and replaced the sick genes with healthy ones taken from the corpse of the Hulk’s father, Brian Banner. Ant-Man basically cured an incurable disease by re configuring a persons DNA. The possibilities are mind-boggling…

But let’s think in comic book terms. If Ant-Man could alter the Hulk at the molecular level, what is there to stop him from killing the Hulk using the same method? Even without shrinking to a sub-atomic level, Ant-Man could just enter the Hulks brain and pulverise it from the inside. That’s right loyal readers. Ant-Man could kill the Hulk and there would be no way of stopping him if he shrunk small enough to avoid detection.

The upcoming movie adaptation is unlikely to explore Ant-Man’s powers to quite this extent, as Marvel Studios prefer to keep their films family friendly, but the potential is certainly there for Ant-Man to take on almost any super powered character and win. Even if the filmmakers decide to limit his powers so that sub-atomic shrinking is no longer possible, Ant-Man could always just shrink his enemies, grow back to full size and then grind them under his shoe like a bug… somewhat ironically. Hilarious or troubling? You decide.

Personally, I'm less concerned about a character's abilities than a character's character. What makes him interesting as a person and as a hero, not "can his powers let him do cool things."

They had a page on the characters but I thought I would post about the powers because some people didn't really get how they can make the shrinking powers interesting/useful.

As Edgar at one point said, it's a power that should look fantastic on the big screen - much better than in the comics.

As a casual, if you want to know the TRUE story of Ant-Man, I suggest you read the comics or at least read the Wikipedia article on the Ant-Man mythos beforehand. Because they are changing ALOT.

If you're just reading wikipedia, it might make sense to wait until after. You aren't getting the enjoyment of a full story like you do by reading a comic and it could affect your enjoyment of the movie by giving preconceived notions.

But no harm to wait until after and read it then.

After Guardians I'm pretty sure that this movie will do good on it's Box Office for a starting franchise.

Probably something around 350M+.

I've never been a huge Ant Man fan either but I'm VERY excited for another film from Marvel about a fresh new character. I can't say I was a lifelong fan of things like Thor, GOTG, etc. either, but now I'm more excited about them than things like X-Men and Spider-Man thanks to the films. Never thought I'd say that.

Another reason Ant Man needs to do well is so they continue moving forward with other new characters like Dr. Strange, Black Panther, Ms. Marvel, etc. The world needs to continue to evolve to stay alive!

So, Marvel lately has been hyping up everyone, from this years Captain America, TWS, to Guardians of the Galaxy, released a teaser for Avengers, Age of Ultron, then had a special press release where they pretty much named movies for Phase three. But, they didn't say a damn thing about Ant Man, which is supposed to come out after Avengers AOU. It seems to me that they don't have much faith in this movie either. If the studio itself isn't hyped up about, excited and whatnot, how the hell am I supposed to be excited for this. Face it guys, this movie looks to be their first flop.

I'm not excited but I am curious how they do the SFX for Ant-Man, and hey Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas are good actors and plus it could be fun

They did mention it, and reiterated that the event was more about the movies they hadn't announced yet. There was a bunch of focus on it at SDCC, now they don't have any faith in it because it wasn't the focus at the event for unannounced stuff?

They had SDCC to hype this movie. The press conference was for Phase 3 with a scene from the very next movie (which has had more filming completed) included for good measure. If this announcement had been made after AoU aired, they probably would have used Ant-Man instead (although it's unlikely that scenario ever would have occurred).

I don't find much about the SDCC stuff. When they did announce it, the crowd wasn't exactly enthusiastic about this. Sorry, I just can't see this movie breaking out. The concept sounds stupid, I just see this movie as being the first flop for Marvel.

You're combining two completely different things to make one criticism. The complaint was whether or not Marvel cared about the movie not whether the general audience cared. SDCC demonstrated Marvel cared. Focusing on Ant-Man in a Phase 3 presentation (when Ant-Man is now Phase 2) would be superfluous.

Whether the general audience will be interested will depend a lot on how it is marketed. They aren't going to be able to market it until they get enough footage to make a teaser trailer. That's when I expect to have some idea how to gauge it. Marvel's actually pretty good at getting them timely released, but it's still going to be a little while (at least two months, but I suspect a bit more given the delay).

As someone else said, they did a lot at SDCC, which they couldn't do for the rest of the future films. This announcement event was for them. Also, keep in mind that Ant Man will be out in less than a year, so you'll see a LOT about it in the coming months. Especially between May and July, that's all you'll see anywhere you at all, in any place, in virtually any corner of the world or galaxy. Marvel knows how to promote and believe me, they will promote the mess out of this movie to the point that you will be annoyed with it.

As far as attracting the casuals go, I think Paul Rudd could be their not-so-secret weapon. He's one of the most charismatic leading men Marvel have been able to acquire, I really like him as an actor and will watch most stuff he does. He definitely has the skill to do for Scott Lang what Chris Pratt did for Peter Quill: take a character who wasn't necessarily the most popular of heroes and, through injecting his own personality into the role, turn him into a fan favourite.

I mean is all the hype and presentation going to make that big a difference to the box office? Yeah it was cool of Marvel to unveil its phase 3 slate but that wasn't really to excite the general public it was for the fans and investors.

I also can't believe we're still on the "It will fail because they didn't respect the source material" arguments.

This is going to be a big change for Marvel compared to their previous films. I am not expecting a guy that can shrink to tiny size start in a massive epic. :) It will be "smaller" in scope compared to other Marvel films.
