So I'm gonna start reading Twilight.....

I usually hate reading two books at the same time, but I may have to switch between this and The Sirens of Titan over the next couple weeks.

I just made a new mythos about vampires and I am going to write a book! Vampires in my book can walk out in the sun, they have normal strength and speed like humans, and they don't have to drink blood! I am an author just like Stephanie!

To be honest in the original Stokers Dracula he was able to go into the sunlight. However he was weakened . Seriously I hate it when authors say "oh they can drink animal blood...". Dracula was written as a sexual story in victorian times. Unlike today one could not simply write erotica so it had to be disguised. I grow tired of these little teen authors watering down the myth of vampires. You lose alot of the sensuality of vampires this way. Its all about seduction and damnation, eternal youth at a high cost.

I love the Anita Blake series because not only are they great dramas but they also hold fast to that angle of seduction. Granted after book 8 it becomes more porn than romance, but I think the author did a great job in taking a type of vampire similar to Dracula and put him in todays society and boom look what happens to poor Anita. For most of the series she refuses to give in to her desire for Jean Claude and Richard, But when she does she becomes an entirely different creature. She is not really human but has a Vampires hunger and can only feed using the Adour.

Don't get me started on the "glitter fab" vamps please.:whatever:

The movie looked like total trash. They washed out the film so much everyone looks like a vampire with a drug proble:csad:. I understand that the card board... I mean characters are supposed to be pale but come on, these actors (for lack of a better word) make albinos drug users look tan.

In short, its a good story, the vampire characters are the most compelling
BUT
Bella is whiney, Jacob is overly aggressive to be the 'nice guy' and Stephanie Meyer is a bad, BAD writer. (be prepared for the same adjectives to be used multiple times about the same object)

well twilight is a sexual story, its about absinence. He can't get close to bella because he might 'eat her'. It therefore follows a vampiric tradition. But Meyer was right when she said as long as they drink blood they can be vampires because the 'species' is so diverse in myth going back to the ancient world. 'Vampires' didn't start with stoker

I'm about to read Twilight for the sake of my girlfriend and my best friend. Except for the movie, which looked wholly uninteresting to me, I know absolutely nothing about this series of books. I've heard several arguments both ways, mostly down gender lines, as to the awesomeness or suckiness of this book. So, is it worth reading, or a total waste of time?

Don't do it!!!!

Isn't the main dude like a pedo? He's like a hundred years old and she's like 16 years old...so isn't that like a hundred year old man goin out with a 16 year old?

Who knows how many times he's done this. This dude should be seriously locked up.

But he looks 17! It's much like Rose/Doctor shippers proclaims that their ''love" is natural because while The Doctor is 900 something years old and alien, he looks like a young human male.

several of the werewolf characters 'imprint' on babies. Basically claiming their territory. Paedophilia is all the way through those books

and **** bill, the doctor and rose were awesome together ;) You could say the same for Buffy and Angel, she was 16 and perhaps even 15 when they met. (Angel saw her in LA months before and claimed he loved her from that moment)

Not really the same when said old person does not physically age. At that point it's not even comparable.

True Vampires didn't start with Stoker. However Stoker was the one who helped shape the vampire mythos to what it is today.

The whole absinence thing is what kills this for me, and dare I say she ripped off Buffy with that idea ( ie Angle wouldn't get with Buffy for basically the same reason.) It also kind of kills the idea of vampires as seducers and corupters of the soul.

I would like to thank you as this is one of the better conversations I have had on literature since I quit working at a book store.

Now here is a question that my boss has posed to me after reading this series as well as Anita Blake and The Black Dagger Brotherhood " Does sex with a vampire count as necrophellia?" My answer was yes. because technically they are dead and just reanimated bodies.

I do agree that Edward is a bit of a pedophile ( I know the argument that he looks 17 ,but If I looked 17 and was dating a 16 year old I would still be arrested.)

So far I've gotten 100 pages in, and all I can say is that its fairly unremarkable. I thought Edward was going to be some brooding *****e based on the movie trailers I've seen, but I'm glad to see that he has a sense of humor and is not. Bella is super-whiney though.

I've been a fan for quite some time now. Read Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse, started on Breaking Dawn last night. I'm not mentally ill, I'm just a one-of-a-kind 15 year old because I don't like violence.
It's better then Harry Potter, worse then comics.

Wrong...

Here's the thing, when I read that part where Edward was so afraid of killling her and Jacob is so afraid of brusing her to death or whatever, it didn't make me think of absinence, it made me think of Anita Blake whose suitors had the same problems. Of course Anita got around that eventually, but my point is, these books are simply ripoffs of similar themes in books older than Meyer's own. There is nothing original in her stories at all. It doesn't make them bad, just a bit boring to a well read person.

I don't find it to be well-written.

I was dragged to the movie, and gave it 2 1/2 stars. I do like Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, but the whole "thing" doesn't interest me enough to read the books.

You might like Midnight Sun better. If you want, quit now, and read the 12 leaked chapters on the author's site of Edward's point of view. I only read the first chapter and it's actually a lot more interesting considering he gives detail after detail about how he wants to kill her or a whole classroom with her in it for that matter.

They were just not in a romantic capacity. It's weird for some time and space traveling 900 year old dude to come to Earth pick up some fresh 18 year old poon tang then fall for her. Soooo very wrong. Especially considering how his character was set up before that.

I'm so excited for this book. :hehe:
