Iron Man So Quiet. Has Marvel given up?

I agree
TDK is getting a lot more of peoples interest than Iron man is...
I personally prefer the iron man movie, but marvel isn't promoting it as well as it should

Well of course TDK is gettin more press It's a sequel to a succesful movie, it's the Joker and WB has a lot riding on this franchise after basically screwin up with Superman Returns.

Iron Man is a lesser known character and this movie is Marvel's studios first. Even if WB kept absolutely quiet about TDK and didn't let ANYTHING reach the press, it would STILL get more attention.

I have this naive image of the Marvel studio, like they are the only film studio to actually give a crap about fans and are more interested in making quality superhero movies than making tones of money (though the money comes from quality is what I always thought). Like I said, I'm an idealist.

Iron Man is a lesser known character and this movie is Marvel's studios first.

Iron Man is not that lesser known. If somebody puts up his picture on a public board, he'll get noticed sooner than any individual member of the F4 except for the Thing (a tie) or any individual member of the X-Men except for Wolverine. Basically his distinctive Red and Gold armor gives him away as one of Marvel iconic characters although Marvel hasn't put that much of a publicity until lately.

You know what Marvel's issue is for Iron Man? Marvel has too many characters that it wants to show off. There's the usual suspects like Spider-Man, the X-Men and Wolverine. Legends on pedestals like Captain America, F4 and Namor. Badass Supremes like Thor, Silver Surfer and Hulk. Readers favorites like Daredevil, Moon Knight and Iron Fist. And many others I'm not mentioning. DC only have to think about Batman-Superman as this pair's fortune can't go below the others. Marvel always has this stop and go spotlight on each of its heroes. For instance, early this year it's Ghost Rider. Then Spider-Man because of the movie. Afterward, Hulk with World War Hulk. Then they have the X-Men on spotlight. On and on until it's Iron Man turn near the movie opening day.

I'm waiting for the Comic Con teaser. It's almost a make or break for Iron Man as it is the first piece of Domino of all Marvel studio film. If it falls...

^No. Every member of the Fantastic Four is more well known than Iron Man, before or after the films. Iron Man is about as famous as Daredevil or Ghost Rider was before their films.

1. The Dark Knight is the 5th movie in one of the biggest film franchises ever.

2. Batman Begins in generally considered one of the best if not the best comic movies by the public.

3. Batman is about 20 times as well known as Iron Man.

4. The Joker is about 20 times as well known as Iron Man.

Those expecting a lot of stuff right now- 9 months to go- are in for a surprise...this is a franchise starter. For these to due well, it's more about blowing up the marketing in the final 4 weeks then it is releasing stuff this early.

Be patient, guys! It'll all come!

Iron Man isn't as well known as you may think. Sure, you show his pic on a comic book board and people will know him....but not the general movie going public. All they will care about is how cool the trailers look before the movie is released.

No, I beg to differ. Iron Man is known more to people than members of the F4 minus the Thing, except children of the 90's. If you're a young guy who were brought up to like Wolverine and the rest of the X-Men, maybe. I grow up in the 80's and I know Iron Man. Tom Cruise and RDJr know Iron Man.

Please don't equate Iron Man with Daredevil and Ghost Rider. That would be ridiculous. Both characters are not in any self-titled cartoon. Heck, they're not in the Marvel vs Capcom or any coin-ops arcade. Iron Man is a Marvel Icon. DD is a semi. Ghost Rider is not.

Maybe.

Iron Man's famous level = Green Lantern's famous level.

To be fair about Marvel vs. Capcom, Shuma-Gorath is in that game, and how many people even knew he existed before that? I didn't.

I don't think Marvel has given up, this is the first movie they are doing and they have a lot riding on it, I just think that they are waiting until CC to show us something good, we have seen some images and posters, hopefully now we will get a teaser trailer and then watch the movie hype go into overdrive.

Fantastic Four had a very popular cartoon series and has had 2 blockbuster movies. Dont even try it. Iron Mans in the exact same boat as Daredevil n Ghost Rider because they have had nothing outside of the comics.

You say "Marvel Icon"...too bad you don't saeem to know that dont mean jack**** to moviegoing audiences.

Character AWARENSS-not popularity-goes in this order...

1. SUPERMAN- Without a doubt, the most famous of all hero's. Spidey n Batman are defiently more popular, but I think MTV got it right when they made him the #2 biggest pop culture icon. 100/100 people would know Superman.

DISTANT 2nd-BATMAN-The 1960's Batman tv show was one of the most popular ever; and the original 1989 film was one of the most high profile movies ever made. The series is still huge. 99/100 people would know Batman.

CLOSE 3rd-SPIDER-MAN-and it is only close...because he has reached the level of Batman and Superman only recently. 99/100 people would know Spider-man.

4. The Incredible Hulk- WAY below the big 3 levels; but still in 4th, is ther Hulk. Again, huge tv show. The 2003 movie was very high profile, and was expected to be enormous, because the character is. 95/100 people would know the hulk.

5. FANTASTIC FOUR-their significantly below HULK..but theyve had 2 big films, and and a very popular cartoon series. 85/100 people would know the character belonged to the fantastic four.

6. X-MEN - very high profile films...but nothing else. Like The Fantastic Four, the fact that its more than one hero makes it harder to to tell....id say wolverine 90/100 people would know...all the other heros .... 75/100.

7. WONDER WOMAN...her tv show was huge. If they made a film version of her, shed come in fifth. 60/100 people would know her.

8 & 9 - tie between Daredevil and Ghost Ruder...these were heros who had nothing other then decent success as comics books, but since they were made into HIT movies...their awareness has gone up. I'd say 50/100 people would know them.

10-11 spots are toss up between characters like THE FLASH, AQUAMAN, ad GREEN LANTERN...Theyve had TV SHOWS or cartoons...but the shows werent big hits like supes, batman, n hulks were...or the cartoon werent popular like fantastic fours was.

and now, WAY behind the pack...is Iron Man. Why? WHAT DOES IT HAVE OUTSIDE OF COMICS? Sorry...but not many-in the 80's maybe 1/10, now probably 1/30 or 40- kids read comics. Look at the characters big in pop culture-Batman, Superman, Spider-man, the Hulk-what did they all have before their film debuts? BIG TV SHOWS. They had expanded into the public beyond their comic fanbases, and into mainstream America in an alternate form of entertainment...and found success. Thats their movies, when they were made...were so friggin huge. Their FAMOUS. WHAT DOES IRON MAN have?

Nothing. That is why he is gonna get compared to Daredevil and Ghost Rider...their the only 2 films that will be as high profile as Iron Man will be that are in its same boat: they had nothing outside of comics.

Of course...there are random hits like MEN IN BLACK...but Iron Man isn't the next MIB.

If you think Iron Man is more well known than the fantastic four, you have no grasp on the publics reality whatsoever. The only people who would know iron man would a percentage of comic readers....and seeing as thats like, 10 out of 100....a percentage of 10 isnt that great. Of course, this will all defiently change come next April and May, i'd say Iron Man would be X-MEN status....but not until then.

F4 is known as F4. No one knows about Mister Fantastic (hey they know Plastic Man more than this guy), Invisible Woman, Human Torch and the Thing that well until the movie. While Iron Man can carry his own comics, has distinctive armor, and what's stopping him from household names is that he never has a big screen movie. Guess what the movie has been thought about since the early 2000 with all the director issues,Tom Cruise thing, and maybe technological barrier.

Let me run down some of the things that Iron Man has but Daredevil and Ghost Rider don't have:
1. Long running standing comics and the character's chance to stand in almost every Marvel-wide story arc. He's the center of attention of Marvel universe now.
2. 60's and 90's cartoon series. There will be a new cartoon series in 2008.
3. Starred in many 80's/90's coin-ops game and videogames lately. Best character in Marvel Nemesis? Iron Man. Unlockable character in X-Men II? Iron Man.
4. One of the most sought after Marvel action figures? Iron Man with his many armors.
5. People wears Iron Man costume to halloween. Youtube has videos guys wearing IM costume.
Remember Iron Man never has that big screen movie.

Marvel icon might not mean a lot right now, but why the hell Marvel pick Iron Man to start his movie venture? Why not Hulk or Captain America? Why not Thor?

To be fair about Marvel vs. Capcom, Shuma-Gorath is in that game, and how many people even knew he existed before that? I didn't.

Is Shuma-Gorath a hero? Hey at least people know Mag and Dr. Doom from MvsC too.

Speaking of which I can't have Wolverine slashing move and Captain America shield throw in the game out of my mind now. ;)

I think guys knows more about WW than X-Men or F4 because of the TV movie. TV series seems to have more impact to character recognition.

I guess you're too DC Comics centric. Where's Captain America in your list? He's more known to people than Green Lantern and Aquaman. How about Thor? He's mentioned in the 80's movie "Adventures in babysitting" and cameo in Hulk.

And you're forgetting that Iron Man has a solo cartoon series in the 90's don't you?

It did? Must not have been popular...

It did? Must not have been popular...

It's as popular as that Flash TV series (at least I don't watch only the pilot in cable reruns) and more succesful than GL solo series, which is non-existent.

I've been telling everyone about the movie, but secretely trying to sabotage it by telling them its the first bi-curious Marvel hero with a drinking problem.

I agree with some of this, although i have to take issue with your F4 and X-men Placement. I'd put X-men higher than F4, of all the people I know they'd more likely know who the x-men are more than a f4 member.

Personally i would put Iron slightly lower than F4 but thats only because F4 has had two big films out and a new cartoon series. Iron Man's had a decent second season of a tv series and a new film but not much esle. I agree that when the film finally comes out people will KNOW about Iron Man and hopefully he'll at least reach x-men status

I'd rather have an underhyped great film than an overhyped turd.

I always love to see these topics for comic movies, most movies don't start the hype machine until 3-4 months before the movie, the month before is when the real hype begins, 1-2 weeks before it opens you'll be tired of seeing TV spots they'll be on so often, Iron Man's mug will be on tons of merchandise, but it won't happen this year, it probably won't start showing up until March next year. Batman has more hype because it's filming in Chicago's Loop, where thousands of people are going to work or touring the city every day, it's a huge production. Don't worry about the hype, it'll happen.

Please... Iron Man is a secundary character in the Marvel universe. It did a great year in Civil War, but its like Fantastic Four. Classic storys in the 60's with Lee, but not a classic character at all... Spidey is the marvel's front character like Batman is DC's. Iron Man is more like a Green Lantern or a Aquaman in DC. Sometimes cool, but most of the times bad. Thats why theres so much hype over the 6th Batman film than a new IronMan. The second in this trilogy, but is the 6th time he gets the silver screen. And another thing, 3 comic book adaptations a year is TOO MUCH. Somebody should stop this! Avi Arad is going to kill the superhero films. Believe me. I love comics, but its getting ridiculous, Whats next? Antman? Wasp? Teen Mutants? Or remakes after remakes like they are doing with Hulk?

Apparantly thats in production with the guy who made hot fuzz attached to write and direct.

This film will have to earn its audience by its cast and word of mouth. Jon Favreau is putting a lot of stuff in this film, political tones included. So whatever the end result, it has to stand on its own performance to win the viewers.
