Batman - loved it when i was younger, but probably more an action film than a batman film. Also, however, a Tim Burton, and he has fantastic style. 3/5

Batman Returns - uber depressing but very very good. 5/5

Batman Forever - camp and unbelievable, but not awful. Tommy Lee Jones is awful, incredibly! Actually, though, its quite well written. 3/5

Batman & Robin - at the risk or being comlpetely unoriginal, I'll say it's terrible. 1/5

Batman Begins - definately got the most heart of any Batman film, and Bale is superb in it - slightly weak third act 4.5/5

The Dark Knight - definately got the most brains of a Batman film - i think it's the closest thing a Kubrick comic book movie. - 4.5/5

So:

TDK
BB
BR
BF
B
B&R

My opinions are constantly changing these days, as of late the films stand at:
Batman (1989) - 5/5

Batman Forever - 3.5/5
Batman Begins - 2/5 (Sorry, I just cannot stand that film)

1.) Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (can't decide.)

2.) Batman/Batman Forever (again, can't decide.)

3.) Batman Beyond Return of the Joker

4.) Batman Returns

5.) Batman and Robin

Don't care about any of the others listed.

- Batman, Mask of the Phantasm, Batman Forever, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight are the Batman films I most like. Be it nostalgia, hype, or just the movie itself, those five are the best in my eyes. Batman started it all. Love the whole "Batman vs. The Joker" approach that the film takes. Set the bar for "dark" Batman films and inspired the greats we have today. Love Keaton as Batman (IN THIS ONE) and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Watched the VHS repeatedly. Summer of 1995 was a great summer with Batman Forever. It was as hyped up as Batman. Like the new look and villians. The indivudual character posters were cool and I just really enjoyed the movie. Good popcorn flick with a touch of fun, light, darkness, and psychology. Never took itself too seriously and was never horribly corny.

Mask of the Phantasm was/is fantastic. Got the same feeling I had with the previous live action films. The fact that it was BTAS just really did it for me.

Batman Begins was just unexpected, totally unexpected. I went in with this "oh a new Batman film that seems boring" attitude and totally came out surprised. Went in not knowing a THING about it and came out pleased. Fantastic, simply fantastic. It's not just a Batman film like the others, no, it's a ****ing FILM.

With The Dark Knight the hype and obsession before the film was actually better than the actual film. Don't know if that's disappointing or not. Joker was the best and most perfect thing about it, not sure about some of the other stuff though. 2007/2008 was the best time of my life because of the movie. I'd be lying if I said I thought it was flawless and perfect but at the same time I'd also be lying if I said it was bland and boring. It really messed up my head and taste from when it was announced to now. Mixed feelings of hype, greatness and confusion which is by no means negative judging by its rank.

- Return of the Joker is good and not a bad film by any means but I'm a hardcore B:TAS nut so I'm not that into Batman Beyond, Justice League, or The New Batman Adventures. It didn't do anything for me.

- Batman Returns is nothing like it's predecessor, Batman. Don't buy that it's considered "canon". In sequence, yeah it's a sequel but in terms of story I can't buy that it's the sequel to Batman. The only sequel that works for these films is The Dark Knight to Batman Begins.

Like Walken, like the Penguin and Catwoman/Selina Kyle is decent in most parts. Like the design and also enjoy the faint sexual inneundos I didn't pick up on as a kid, but now as an adult I get. Decent but doesn't touch my top listings. Still watchable.

- Batman and Robin is stupid and funny as hell. NOTHING like the films BEFORE or AFTER it. Truly a monstrosity in and on it's own right. Parts I like. This is mostly towards Ahnuld though. I love Arnold. His bad puns on top of the fact that, unlike most actors, he could walk away from the film and not be tainted make Batman and Robin a bit entertaining. I also like how RIDICULOUSLY INFAMOUS this film is. For as bad as it is we have to all admit. Batman and Robin gets talked about almost as much as, if NOT MORE than The Dark Knight. Eveyone pans the hell out of this movie and EVERYONE knows and talks about it. Also have a good bit of nostalgia. I have it with all the Batman films. Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. I was excited a for it before it turned into the **** fest it now infamously is.

Oh and just like Returns, I don't care how many people tell me otherwise, this is not related to Batman Forever. Only similar qualities is that it was directed by the same director who became GAYER (if that's even possible) the 2 years between his first good Batman film and his atrocious second/LAST film and it's basically the waste of Batman Forever. Batman and Robin ripped off Forever's plot, villians, and gimmicks that worked and took the crappiest parts and magnified it times 10! Sucks that poor Forever gets paired with B&R. Just not fair IMO.

The others I don't really care about. I saw the 1966 Batman as a kid, Meh. I appreciate and respect it and all but it's not my thing. The 60s Batman is okay, whatever. As for the other animated Batman films, **** em. I hate Sub Zero. I don't know what they were going for with the "3D animation!" gimmick. Also hate some of the anime looking animation. If I want a good Mr. Freeze story, I'll watch my BTAS Heart of Ice episodes. Mystery of the Batwoman and World's Finest can also go light somewhere. I just don't care about them as much as BTAS and MOTP.

I know it's not a film but the best medium for Batman in MY mind is, you guessed it,

url

That's where it all hits home for me. Best interpretation of Batman in my opinion. Not even The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Batman or Batman Forever can ammount to the feeling I get with The Animated Series.

Best stories, best animation, best music, most nostalgia, **** yeah!

But yeah my tops MOVIE wise are,

1.) Batman Begins/The Dark Knight/Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (can't decide.)

2.) Batman/Batman Forever (again, can't decide.)

I love the place I'm at too. I have knowledge and taste on both sides of the spectrum and can totally trash on the strange, weird, emo/goth burton nuts as well as the conservative, annoying, extermist "Nolanites" and their strange fetish with "realism".

Best of both worlds.

I've been watching the six Batman films on bluray back to back over the Christmas period so this is my ranking for them while they're still fresh in my memory:

1. Batman (1989) 5/5 - By far my favourite Batman film.
2. The Dark Knight 4/5 - I like two-face in this, he is much better than Tommy Lee Jones' version. But Nicholson still remains the true Joker for me, and Burton's Joker was actually funny which is how I feel the Joker should be, rather than just plain callous and hardly any elements of humour á la TDK's Joker.
3. Batman Returns 3/5 - Not as keen on this one, Burton's portrayal of Penguin puts me off, but I love the Catwoman in this.
4. Batman Begins 2/5 - Found this one quite dull actually. But it was good to see Scarecrow on the big screen.
5. Batman & Robin 2/5 - It wasn't as bad as I remembered, but I hadn't watched it in over ten years. If you watch it as a plain old summer movie without taking it seriously, it has the action and cheesy one-liners.
6. Batman Forever 1/5 - I use to like this, but now I find it too headache-inducing and actually prefer B&R over this. It just has far too much neon, I honestly felt nauseous at the end of this movie (probably the bluray because I didn't notice this as much before on SD). And two-face's makeup is just ridiculous.

The Dark Knight's Joker is very much based on the very first two appearences of the character, in which he is not funny. At all. You see, that's the point of the Joker. Dramatic irony. You have a man who looks demonic, dressed as a bat and with horns, who is actually the good guy. You have a man dressed as a clown who is supposed to bring harmless joy and fun, who is actually a terrifying killer.

In addition, Ledger's Joker actually did a lot of funny things. He did some old-style slapstick with the champagne glass and tripping over the wire after his truck was flipped. Also his lines, "Can you please just gimme a minute?" and others are clearly moments of humour.

Good point. But I still like the Joker who laughs and thinks that everything evil is hilarious. So, I feel like Nicholson's Joker was the better written one. However, Heath Ledger definitely gave the best performance.

Don't forget Cesar Romero; he laughed constantly at his villainous schemes. He was a great Joker as well.

1. the dark knight
2. batman begins
3. mask of the phantasm
4. batman returns
5. batman (1989)
6. batman forever
7. batman and robin

Yeah, but Romero's villainous schemes were pretty ridiculous. Nicholson was actually killing people and laughing about it.

Romero didn't write the scripts though. His Joker was still perfect except for that.

Hmm... the first time i watched TDk, i hated it because the Joker was so different from the 89 version... but after repeated viewings i noticed the "funny" parts in TDk Joker... like "Hello Beautiful" and stuff... i dont know, its up to the individual's interpretation i guess and thats what makes the Joker so interesting.

6. Batman Forever And two-face's makeup is just ridiculous

yea thats what killed it for me... :csad:

It bares further investigation, it really does. The comedic bits are easy to miss and not highlighted, and yet they are done with perfect comic timing by Ledger and there are moments of perfect old style slapstick. When the Joker trips over the wire and fires his gun, is it deliberate or accidental? The bit with the champagne is deliberate. I love those blink and you'll miss them touches.

Us irish audiences must be quicker to pick up the comedy moments, because all of the audiences I saw TDK with, they all reacted to the comedy moments from the get-go. Not just with Joker, but all the other ones like Bruce arriving at the party with a bunch of hot women on his arm, or when Batman tossed Maroni off the balcony, or when Lau was delivered to Gordon with the 'Please deliver' sign pinned to his chest etc.

Joker's ones were the best though. Right down to little things like:

Gambol: "You think you can steal from us and just walk away?"
Joker: "Yeah"

It was all in Ledger's superb delivery.

1) Batman Begins
2) Dark Knight
3) Mask of the Phantasm
4) Return of the Joker
5) Batman Forever
6) B89
7) Batman and Robin
8) Batman Returns

I dont really care for "Mystery of the Batwoman" and its been a long time since i've seen "Sub Zero" so i cant rate it.
And yeah, i think that Returns was a biggest pile of crap then B&R, because you can have fun watching B&R and think of it as a live action Brave and the Bold movie. Returns isnt even a batman movie. Its a typical grimdark Burton movie with Batman characters running around.

I rated Forever above B89 because when i was first introduced to Batman was the time BF came out, and it made B89 pale in comparison. Sure it was cheesy and over the top, but i was just a kid, and the batsuits were better, the action was better, the story and setting wasnt so damn grimdark, the Kilmer looked more like a superhero than Keaton, and so on. B89 was already aging badly at the time Forever came out. Of course Forever is the worse film, but it has a better replay value and a better production quality.
Batman Begins was forgettable? :cmad::cmad::cmad::cmad::cmad::cmad:

Batman throwing maroni off the balcony was not supposed to be funny, it's supposed to be shocking. A sign that Batman may be going too far.
