A bit of an introduction before I start:

This is my second attempt at a fanfic here at the Hype, but hopefully this one will be a little more successful than 'Hoods' (which I still plan on finishing one of these days).

I was a fan of the old Sonic cartoon from the 90s (the one with Sally et al, better known as SatAM), and the Archie comic was the first series I collected. While I eventually outgrew it, I still had a soft spot for the character (even if the new games weren't that good), and played him for a bit in the tragically-short-lived Multiversers Unlimited RPG. It was pretty fun, and wanted to continue writing him in some fashion or another.

I'd been kicking the story around in my head for a good bit, but didn't get the wind up to start writing it down until reading Morzan's original take on the Mario Bros. characters. I figure if there's enough of an audience for video-game fanfics, I might as well take a shot at it.

Basically, it's a fleshed-out 'Ultimate' style retelling of the first four Sonic games (Sonic 1 through Sonic & Knuckles), with characters and elements from the SatAM cartoon and the Archie comic thrown in, as well as my own particular tweaks. And a heavy-metal motif for all the titles, but that's just more for my own amusement than anything to do with the actual story.

Anyway, enough ado. Might as well get started.

ACT 1:
CHAPTER 1: RUN TO THE HILLS

He had been running all his life, and this day was no exception. The world blurred around him, the trees of the Great Forest running together into emerald streaks as he flew past them. The sky was bright and clear today, and the lake glittered in the ever-shrinking distance. Going this fast, the sights blended into a kaleidoscope of colors.

He had to admit, even after all this time, it was still the greatest rush in the world. Here he was, going at speeds that ought to turn his body into paste, and instead, he was smiling as he went.

At this speed, he barely noticed the ground passing under him, the wind whipping at his face...

...or the laser beams exploding behind him.

"Ah, that's my cue," he said to himself with a grin. He skidded to a halt, making a quick about-face to see who was giving him a few minutes' worth of entertainment by shooting at him.

Just as he'd suspected, he was being followed by one of Robotnik's buzz-bombers, a sleek violet wasp-shaped machine blasting its turbine engines in an attempt to keep up with its target. Now that he was still, the buzz-bomber slowed so that it could adjust its stinger and aim for a killing shot.

"That's it, ugly, just fire away." He was in the mood to have a little fun with this one, so he'd let it let off few pot shots before taking it out.

The buzz-bomber squared its laser beam and fired. Even with his incredible speed, it was still impossible to outrun something going at the speed of light. Fortunately, by the time the machine fired its weapon, he was already on the move.

He sprung into the air, cartwheeling to the right as the bright red beam cut into the ground underneath him. Before the robot could check its aim, he darted forward, sliding underneath the buzz-bomber and kicking up a cloud of dust to obscure its vision. To counter this, the robotic wasp fired its jets and rose higher, turning around to find its target.

At that point, he was already aiming to bring the buzz-bomber down. While the bot went airborne, he leapt towards the nearest tree, planting his feet on the trunk and springing off into the air. Moving too fast for the buzz-bomber to track, he curled himself into a ball and began to spin, bouncing from tree to tree while the machine fired wildly in his direction.

Finally, he spun downwards, bounding off of the ground and launching up directly towards the buzz-bomber. Before it could react, the bot was torn apart from the spinning blue ball that slammed through it.

Coming out of the spin, he touched down as the remains of the buzz-bomber scattered down around him, and he raised his hands up with a fluorish, showing off to no one in particular.

"Ladies and gentlemen, another stunning performance by yours truly! We'd like to thank the contestant for playing, but hey, they can't all be winners, can they?"

He kicked what was left of the buzz-bomber's head and watched it tumble down the path.

"Now that I'm thinkin' about it, though, what's one of those little jerks doing all the way out here? Robotnik doesn't like to send bots out by themselves. Buzz-bombers are usually flyin' escort for something...bigger..."

He quickly climbed up another tree to scan the horizon. And sure enough, the buzz-bomber he'd been playing with was far from alone. Behind him, the blue sky was darkened by swarms of the mechanical insects, and the trees shook back and forth as more robots scurried on the ground beneath them. These smaller bots, however, were just the escorts to the massive warship that hung in the air.

One of Robotnik's Wing Fortresses, the flying battleships that he and the other Freedom Fighters avoided at all costs. And now, one of them was heading straight for...

"...Knothole. Gotta get back there and warn everybody!"

The mechanical fleet bearing down on him suddenly lost their target. Back on the ground, he was rocketing along as fast as he could. He had to put as much distance as he could between himself and Robotnik's force. There was no way, no way, he was going to let the fat man get a hold of his friends.

"Sonic the Hedgehog," he said with a sigh, "this is going to be a l-o-n-g day."
