The south has nothing to be proud of.

'Cept for Johnny Cash.

And Coca Cola, Chick-fil-A, jazz, blues, country and rock, Morgan Freeman, Laurence Fishburne, DeForest Kelley, Dr. Martin Luther King, Burt Reynolds, Jim Henson, Gladys Knight, Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Ray Stevens, Little Richard, Sidney Poitier, David Robinson, Ray Walston, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Hank Aaron, Brett Favre, Kim Basinger, Billy Graham, Carl Lewis, Sela Ward, Jerry Rice, Peyton Manning, Oprah Winfrey, Elvis Presley, Andy Griffith, Richard Petty...

I guess I could do that, but the Civil War was a war about state's rights. So I don't see why I would do that.

Yes, the states have the right to secede when they don't like the results of an election, or the states right to limit or otherwise suppress the freedom of speech of those who were for the abolition of slavery.

Those rights, correct?

You forgot Creole cuisine.

The confederate flag is like somebody flying their team's colors after they got blew out in the Super Bowl. Every ****ing year since their inception.

And soul food--whoever created cornbread deserves to be nominated for sainthood. :o

As for the Confederate flag--I'll grant that during the Civil War is stood less for slavery and racism and more for state's rights. But, ignorant, hateful a*sholes during the 60s waving it around and screaming at little black kids for going into previously whites-only schools f**ked them up to have that symbol stand for anything other than bigotry in the eyes of modern society.

Correct. Cornbread, beans, and crawdads (crawfish).

Biscuits, mashed potatoes, fried chicken, tea...damn I'm hungry

The British invented most of that.

States have the right to secede at any given time. regardless of reason.
since i get the feeling people are going to jump to the conclusion that i am pro slavery I'll take this time to point out that everything about slavery disgusts me. I do not support it.
Again, though. The Civil War was not about slavery.

Jeez. Typing posts on my phone is a pain in the ass.

I honestly think this country would be better off as two or three seperate entities, especially since political opinion tends to be determined by geographical areas.

Hey, kinda funny you ignored the part of them suppressing the freedom of speech to abolitionists.

The flag doesn't represent racism so much as it represents secession...which is treason. And treason is also bad. So I don't get it when people say it represents their heritage, 'cause that part of history isn't exactly something one should be proud of.

I'd say it's more relative. If it's the kind of treason that is a threat to national security, that's not neutral. And it's not neutral in the eyes of the government, since it's a crime and whatnot. But yes, there have been many, many instances in history where acts of treason were justified.

But the Confederacy was on the wrong end of the state's rights spectrum.

By that same notion, the American Flag is a symbol of treason to the England, since we did rebel and declare our independence (same as succeeding from a country). At the time, any colonists that were captured and convicted of fighting against England were called treasons and sentenced to death. So is the American Flag and the leaving of the England empire something to be proud of?

See my above post. Also, no. Southerners should not be proud of their secession from the Union. Why should they be?

According to the US Code

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

Doesn't sound that neutral to me.

As for the US flag being a symbol of treason to England, only if the US lost the Revolutionary War.
