Spider-Man: Edge of Time

I TOTALLY agree with these posts. Seriously, after watching the new Arkham City trailer (which is UNBELIEVABLY AMAZING!!! :wow:) the first thought I got then was "Why can't Spidey be treated with such love!!??". I'd so LOVE for a Spidey game to have a really deep, personal and dark story with Norman/Green Goblin (616 version of course) as the main antagonist.

I agree with having 616 GG as the villain, what it all boils down to is Activision being willing enough to create a Spidey game with a darker tone. Another thing too, if GG is the main villain, he should to have a hand in Spidey's other encounters with other villains, meaning GG should be shown influencing some villains to go after Spidey. They could possibly have Spidey attempt to save someone and they die thus turning his friends against him and possibly the people of NY against him.

Maybe Norman should be the head of H.A.M.M.E.R. in a game where he is the big boss and main antagonist, he'll have more authority that way

While we're at it, who would you like to be the writer for a more serious, darker toned and personal Spidey game with Norman Osborn as the main antagonist?

If I take a comic writer I would choose......
Peter David

I don't know about video game writers

I know I'll get burned and bashed for this (probably) but I'd actually be very interested to see what Paul Dini would do to Spidey. I know, all this "Spidey should be like Batman because Batman iz da keewl shiet" is extremely annoying these days, but I still think Paul Dini could come up with some great stuff with villains such as Green Goblin and come up with a great story.

Did you know he's working on the new Ultimate Spider-Man animated series?

Paul Dini is an interesting choice, but he's already pulled from each arm and leg from different directions

I would like to see a collaboration of writers from Marvel come up with a story for a Spidey game. And if the game does take a darker tone, I would like to see the character's costumes take a darker tone, so that means Spidey is red and black, Green Goblin looks more devilish, and his demeanor is more deranged and psycho, not some laughing, cackling, jackass

Yeah I know and it will be interesting to see what he may do with it. But it would be way more interesting to see what he would do to the Amazing version instead.

Yeah, him writing for a Spidey game feels pretty unlikely but one can dream :cwink:

Nah, I'd still prefer the red and blue costume. It would still fit imo.

Either or, and now that I think about it, instead of black, I would go for a darker blue. Hell, the Web of Shadows Spidey character model was one of the better looking ones, so a few adjustments to that one, and it would be perfect for the next game :awesome:

I always thought the Spidey character model in the movie games looked....weird

I thought the model for Amazing in Shattered Dimensions was pretty spot on. Just use that. A game can be serious in tone without having to mute the colors and make it dark. I would like the next Spider-Man game to be colorful, but that doesn't mean it can't have a nuanced story.

And just let Dan Slott write it, he's already got some experience with how writing for a game works and he is the current Spidey-scribe.

They could do it like that, but the main focus from that point on should be keeping it linear, it gives them time to work on the backgrounds and enviroment. Alot of the freeroam Spidey games offered a huge city, but the stuff available for you to do became extremely repetitive. I always envisioned Spidey using his webs, agility, and the envirioment to his advantage. WoS gave Spidey moves that could have possibly fit in a fighting game, but not an action game. They don't have to mute the colors out, but the game's graphics should give off a look that this is a completely different Spidey game. Activision has potential to do alot with Spider-Man but it seems like they keep him in mediocrity, everyone loved the Spider-Man 2 game so much that it seems like it became the basis for a string of freeroam Spidey games. It's time to change it back to being linear and throw in some villains that aren't symbiote powered. His rogues gallery is large enough to have villains that we've never seen before in games.

I agree, dark blue would be the best.

I'd also love if Green Goblin would look like this:

I love that picture btw :)

yeah I wouldn't mind seeing that Goblin. For what it's worth, Activision can see even bigger numbers if they make use of Spidey's rogues gallery instead of sticking to the same villains. Since alot of us compare AA to Spidey games, a darker tone may be what the SM games need in order to draw in more people. I look at it like this, Friend or Foe is aimed towards younger people, Web of Shadows and Shattered Dimensions towards teens, this upcoming game should be aimed towards young adults. I'm not saying they have to make it an M rated game, but we need the tone and overall look of the game too not look bright and friendly. Here's a few ideas on what else could possibly work

-Make the city similar to Liberty City as far as scale, detail, and pedestrians
-Instead of regular ragdoll physics, use Euphoria, just to give the player an idea of how someone would react to being webbed and other types of punishment
-If they take the freeroam route again, vary the mission types, pedestrian missons more so
-Give multiple villains good reasoning for being in the game, not just because they happened to be in the neighborhood
-Leave out superheroes assisting Spidey
-If the game has stealth missions, half should be as Spidey, the other half as Parker
-Stealth should be a mix of Assassin's Creed and Splinter-Cell Conviction
-Combat should be similar to AA, no punch and kick buttons etc. It should just have attack, web, grapple, and jump button
-Green Goblin should be the main villain
-Game takes place in 616 Universe

I like your ideas above. A lot actually. See the best spider-man game for freerom has to be Spider-Man 2. The city was a good size, and the momentum you gained while swing was done well. Also the Black Cat side story was really well done.

The boss fights were really good and the little pizza side mission broke up the story and provided some fun from time to time. However even though the game was good, its suffered from boring random crimes and at the end of 6 months of playing the game over and over, the same thing over and over just didn't sit well.

then again, 6months is a long time lol

Anyway, changing the web swinging would be good. Im talking about many different animations. Not just the same old stuff over and over again. Also spider-man is extremely agile so why not show that in the game by allowing stunts to be preformed.

What I loved about Prototype and Assassin's Creed was the ability to continue moving forward no matter what was in front of you. Especially with Prototype. You just held down the trigger and moved in the direction without hassle.

And spider-man should be the same. A sprint button which allows free-running, web swinging, wall crawling, and sprinting all at once.

I keep picturing a battle in my head. The Green Goblin has just thrown you back and against a building wall and his goons are aiming their guns at you. The goblin takes off and taunts you while flying off. You quickly fire off a few impact shots to distract the first gunmen, and then hold the trigger and run forward. you spring over a turned over truck, leap off it into the sky, fire off a web and build up some serious speed. Spring off that web heading up toward a building roof. flip forward onto the roof and land into a roll which then turns into a forward run and you fire off another web and continue swing. You can see the Goblin in front and you dodge his incoming attacks by holding the web and using the building sides to spring all over the place while continuing to move closer and closer. Eventually you grab hold of the Goblin glider and are about to throw a punch, but the goblin jumps off as the glider flies into an office building. You hold down the trigger, correct yourself and come out of the side, flipping back onto the building and running up toward the Goblin.

I just want a movement style that makes you feel like Spider-Man.

I see what you're saying and that does sound really good. I always picture Spidey's fighting in game similar to one of his fights from the first film, I believe there were 4 muggers in the street, he swung in, kicked the 2 guys that were on both sides of him, jumped up, did some sort of frankensteiner on one guy, another guy pointed a gun at him, he kicked him, bounced off a guys chest doing a backflip and punching 2 guys in the face, then turning and looking at his camera to say "cheese". He should move just like that, there should be some sort of rating system for how quickly you dispatch enemies, kinda like Amazing = you beat them regurlarly, Spectacular = you took very little damage, Ultimate = you took no damage and it results in a snapshot being taken.

I like that rating style. Would be a good way to earn some money in the game. After all, Peter Parker does have to pay for things.

As I mentioned above, I do believe there should be one trigger that does all the amazing stuff Spider-Man can do. He is one of the most agile heroes in Marvel, so for once, why not allow us to see it.

Because it's no fun? I'm not trying to be rude as I thought about the same thing before, but just pressing the win-button would get boring after a couple of hours. Web-swinging is fun because if you mastered it you got an incredible flow, if you just press one button and make it do everything for you you lose that. Sure it may look cool and sure Assassin's Creed does it well but thats just for running and climbing, with the latter still requiring some thought.

To me what they should do is focus on implementing the perch points even more in the game. Between the swinging from S-M2 and web-zipping in SD you get something that pretty close to how Spider-Man moves around. Making the perch points easier to land on when jumping to them is a plus because he always does that.

Now thats just my two scents about the moving around part.

Oh no, I'm not trying to say to remove the web swinging trigger, I love trying to master that art. I'm simply saying they should make the sprint trigger into what I mention above. Keep the web swing trigger because without that, it doesn't make it a spider-man game.

And I see what you mean with SD and web zipping, but I really wasn't fond of how they handled that. It felt like spider-man was locked to those perch points and made him less free to go where I wanted him to go, and made it to easy at points.

yeah, keep the web swing button, and whatever the sprint button is, it can be used to increase the speed of his swing and if he is airborne with no web in hand, it could allow him to do flips and acrobatics until he touches ground again.

Djurdjuvic art is perfect for game models
That is a Djurdjuvic art, or I missed the mark?

I can see making the sprint button into something kinda what you described. Like instead of stopping dead/running into (in classic video game manner) a roof fan, holding the sprint button would make you leap over it, like in AC. Is that what you mean, because in that case it would be useful.

For the things you imagined him doing, while sounding cool it isn't really something that needs to be put on one button. Jumping, web swinging, web zipping and wall crawling is all you need to do that. Maybe not as flashy as you pictured but it but ultimately the same, at least from the sound of it.

I thought the perch point was one of the best things about SD, pretty much everything that looked zippable was, and it made it easy to land where you wanted. That to me felt right, especially considering Spider-Man with ease should be able to land where he wants to, something that earlier games have had some problem with. Now the jumping on the other hand, that was useless in Shattered Dimensions, clunky as all hell.

I almost forgot, they KEY thing that needs to be improved in the next game is that God forsaken camera, I think that has been an issue that has persists in pretty much all of the Spidey games. If I'm in the heat of battle against multiple enemies, the last thing I need is to be virtually disoriented by the camera not being able to keep up with Spider-Man. As I stated earlier, making the game the scale of Liberty City and giving it the detail that Rockstar put into GTA 4 would greatly improve SM. NY in the Spider-Man games always felt a little lifeless IMO, it manage to capture the overall architecture of NY, but it didn't carry over the life or energy that the city brings. Liberty City felt more like NY without actually being NY.

You know, it's been said that Sucker Punch did what free-roam Spider-Man games wish they did when they created inFAMOUS.

They took a free-roam city, added damage and people EVERYWHERE. What you do in that world really DOES matter. It's not just main choices from the game, what you do while you're not on a mission also makes a difference. You could be chasing a gang member or fighting a boss...but if you cause damage and kill people your meter becomes less Heroic and, over time, your abilities begin to change to go with your morality rating.

This is how Web of Shadows should have been or maybe what Shaba Games was trying to go for.

It's actually really disheartening that people on Facebook seem to prefer the WoS voice actor to NPH. They said that WoS was a LOT better than SM:SD even. This really worries me as their ideas are the only ones I've heard there. =/
