Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 2

To be so silent on Peter's place of employment is a pretty big sign to me. Tied to story, part of twost, perhaps a sequel set up etc. Something fishy about the whole thing.

Is it just totally not possible to get the collector's edition at Gamestop with in-store pickup on the release day? I guess not. I checked Best Buy and it looks like I can get in-store pickup for the collector's edition on release day. I kinda want a physical copy and that comes with the steelbook so I might go with that because I'm nuts.

Considering he's working as a scientist...Baxter Building maybe?

That'd be cool, I hope the Baxter Building made it in at the very least. It's such a cornerstone of Marvel's New York. I'd like to see Peter's relationship with the FF get more attention outside the comics, it's a little too Avenger-y focused for me sometimes in the media, but the corporate landscape is hopefully changing so that the FF will get more prominent time in the limelight.

Yes, I can't think of a reason why they would keep that a secret.

I'm gonna guess that he's a lab assistant to Otto Octavius. That could be pretty cool

****, that is a good guess. I didn't even consider something like that.

Someone also said Baxter building and I think that is 10x better than Stark, but the fact that the FF only literally just came back to comics like a week ago--I'd say that's out.

Insomniac also mentioned that, as I suggested: the white parts of his suit are the most protected/reinforced. So I'm assuming wherever he works allows him access to whatever the white material is and thus why he makes a new suit.

So...vibranium? Works at SHIELD, possibly?

It absolutely does and I don't consider that a bad thing at all.

The combat in this game mirrors what Beenox did with the ASM games and that is copying the free form style of the Arkham games. Of course it wasn't as good more like a lite version but many including myself have always argued that style of combat is perfect for Spidey. And it looks like Insomniac has made notable improvements.

Same with the web swinging. It has the look and feel of the Beenox games, web rush mechanic included and again imo this is a good thing. Beenox despite their faults, mostly a low budget and time constraints, they were really on the right track as far as the idea portion of developing how Spider-Man should move around. And again, Insomniac has taken what Beenox started and at least to me looks like they improved it.
Meh. I think it's pretty lazy to be honest. I didn't like either TASM game, the Web Rush mechanic was incredibly lazy - I want to be the one doing the acrobatics manually not having automated animations doing it for for me. And the combat in TASM was one of the better aspects of that game, I agree. But I hated the web swinging in both games, no weight, gravity or pendulum like SM2. Disappointed that this game is basically on the same engine as those games

The part in bold is totally false. Insomniac used their own engine for this game.

The swinging is completely different than Beenox's system just in terms of the number of inputs you are given for movement. They seemed to have separated all of the ideas Beenox had in their web rush into individual commands. You have a way to perch, a way to swing, a way to parkour, a way to web zip, a way to jump, and you use these accordingly to move how you want. Not like TASM where you push web-rush and he does it. Plus there is a whole upgrade system with swing speeds and different movement abilities we haven't seen.

Plus the way the game feels makes a tremendous impact. It's only one account, but Game Informer said the swinging immediately felt better than that of Spider-Man 2. Like just from swing one. Game feel goes a long way.

Give it a chance--looks can be deceiving.

Is it just me or does this game look like a sequel to TASM? The gameplay mechanics seem VERY similar to those games

That's what I thought when I first saw the teaser, even the 8 minutes demo didn't change my mind.
Recent interviews and discussions are summed up well in socool's last post.

About swinging though; I kinda like the TASM 2 system. Not my ideal kind of web swinging, but it's serviceable and nicely entertaining.

Beenox had a lot of right ideas but couldn't execute them perfectly. Insomniac probably has all the right ideas and the talent, time and budget to execute them well. This Alpha footage looks objectively impressive.

Keep in mind the engine is Insomniac's own engine. It's the same as Sunset Overdrive and Ratchet & Clank.

Seriously if anyone has doubts try Sunset Overdrive. God-tier traversal, complex and incredibly satisfying.

They are not using TASM2 engine. I asked about it a long time ago on Twitter and they said that they are using their own engine.

Here is a great Spider-Man 2 making-of video and they talk about the web-swinging:

I really hope they get the swinging right in this. It looks great.

Honestly, what I want most to be replicated from Spider-Man 2 is the kind of dual swinging that game offered.

Seeing that video just brings back the joy of web-swinging, and how they've come along way.

I watch their reveal videos and description videos, and think how long a way we came from this

And how much power the new system has when compared to the previous generation. People having a tea party on a roof in a city bigger than that of Web of Shadows, with much more life and vibrancy to the environment.

New game just looks seamless, it's so beautiful. I want September to be t'row.

I'm in no hurry to skip the rest of spring, I'd love to have Alphonso Mango.

Everyone raves about the Spider-Man 2 web swinging but I thought it was extremely clunky. I don't get the comparison was SM2 and SM PS4 as the latter looks smooth and fluid.

Yup, pretty much every old OW Spider-Man game looks clunky compared to this.

I love the swinging in SM2 (I still say that's my favorite Spidey game) and I was really wowed by how the swinging looks in this game from the new footage, it really leaves an impression unlike when open world footage came out for pretty much every other Spidey game. I remember in the past I'd try to coax myself into saying "maybe swinging will be fun." But here it really looks like they got it, the bits where he's swinging around looks weighty and exhilarating and then he just keeps springing off of the environment all over the place nonstop. It's a real wow.

My favorite Spider-Man game is still the Neversoft game.
Mainly because of the story but above all else the controls were EASY.
I found the Spider-Man 2 controls clunky and unintuitive. I don't want to complete a Mensa exam to get to grips with how to make Spider-Man traverse New York. Add to that, it looks like Spider-Man was having a fit every time you pressed any button between a web swing.

SM PS4, by comparison, looks fluid and most of all, EASY. But the real test is obviously when you play the game.

Now, I take on board, I have the hand to eye co-ordination of a badly slighted sloth and I am a dufus on games on the whole, and please factor this in, but watching the pod cast interview where the controls are explained for the upcoming game, I can see I will struggle with them, they don't sound easy to me BUT that said, the Neversoft games were incredibly fluid and easy, for me, the best Spidey games to date.

Listening to podcast interview I'm alarmed at how involved they want the player to be during the swinging.

I can't talk for anyone else, but the thing I love most about Spider-Man games is just swinging around New York. I do this until I get bored and then I think, '**** it, it's time to do some missions'. It sounds like you have to do combinations to propel yourself forwards. Sounds hard.

I am sure I'll get used to it but the whole L3 button dependency to me, doesn't sound like a rational idea, in the main, it's not an easy / responsive button at the best of times, so relying on it to be core to your movement sounds like a right pain.

It does. I am going to have to trust that they have playtested this for hours and this VAST change in traversal mechanics is intuitive.
If insomniac has any sense they will get a load of people off the streets, get them to sign NDAs and get them to playtest the swinging mechanics to gauge if it is intuitive or if the user has to constantly fight the controls.
If the swinging in the game doesn't work then the game won't work. Simple as that.
