Spider-Man (PS4) - Part 2

It does. I am going to have to trust that they have playtested this for hours and this VAST change in traversal mechanics is intuitive.
If insomniac has any sense they will get a load of people off the streets, get them to sign NDAs and get them to playtest the swinging mechanics to gauge if it is intuitive or if the user has to constantly fight the controls.
If the swinging in the game doesn't work then the game won't work. Simple as that.

Absolutely. The combat looks nailed, but unless as you say, getting around and through the maps and buildings, it's all moot.

If it makes sense, it's got to be as fluid as using Batman is/was in Arkham games, but for Spider-man is in this one. Be organic, let the environment dictate the movement, not the other way round.

Basically, getting from A to B should be made using the minimum of button presses. Have a simple system BUT if the 'wants' to make complex combinations, let them. Don't have a complex system. There's a difference.

I'll struggle enough with A-B, will leave the complicated pipe and crane manouveres to others !! :woot:

Everyone raves about the Spider-Man 2 web swinging but I thought it was extremely clunky. I don't get the comparison was SM2 and SM PS4 as the latter looks smooth and fluid.

Ironically, your avatar demonstrates what made the swinging in Spider-man 2 unique among all other games. See how Spidey goes from line to line, grabbing the next line before he releases the previous? Spider-man 2 was the only game to allow you to do this. Every game since has been missing this feature, and so far it looks like this new game will as well.

Swinging in that game is really good, it requires some getting used to, but it's some really fun swinging with well defined controls.

So what's everyone's favourite Spidey game so far? Mine are Spider-Man PS1, SM2, USM, SD and ASM1. Then WoS and SM3 360. ASM2 was a huge disappointment.

My favorites are Spider-Man PS1, SM2: Enter Electro PS1, Spider-Man 2 PS2 and Spider-Man 3 Xbox 360. Only bad thing about SM3 was that many of the boss battles near the end were too hard. I remember really hating Kraven and Kingpin boss battles. Ultimate Spider-Man was also fun.

I recommend playing Spider-Man 2 on PSP. It is basically the first movie game with a new story:

The two PS1 games for me, ok, now, graphically they look well past it, but the gameplay was first class and the approach, the way it was presented and the content you could tell was made with love & knowledge of the character, made by people who cared.

Haven't much played any other past SM2, but the 2018 game is a first day purchase for me.

The two PS1 games and SM-2.

I'm assuming the trigger buttons will be used for webslinging and what not. That's like the most user friendly option.

L2 is slow down button, L2 + R2 is perch point zip

The air dive from L3 is the weirdest choice. There must be a lot of stuff if they couldnt fit it anywhere else. And is anyone else bothered how Spidey goes into that dive motion? His body just flips upside down

Everything else looks top notch and that dive move is like from a GTA mod

PS1 and SM2. What has come since hasn't come close to story and gameplay.

Is it just totally not possible to get the collector's edition at Gamestop with in-store pickup on the release day? I guess not. I checked Best Buy and it looks like I can get in-store pickup for the collector's edition on release day. I kinda want a physical copy and that comes with the steelbook so I might go with that because I'm nuts.

I'd prefer a physical copy but the collector's edition is too much money imo and I don't think the future DLC comes with the standard physical copy so, because I want that DLC as part of my preorder, I'm going with the digital.

Meh. I think it's pretty lazy to be honest. I didn't like either TASM game, the Web Rush mechanic was incredibly lazy - I want to be the one doing the acrobatics manually not having automated animations doing it for for me. And the combat in TASM was one of the better aspects of that game, I agree. But I hated the web swinging in both games, no weight, gravity or pendulum like SM2. Disappointed that this game is basically on the same engine as those games

While the in-game gameplay of Beenox' efforts was not so great, again mostly because of the time constraints and a reduced budget, that doesn't negate that they had the right idea. The web rush gameplay was indeed just a button press and then watch Spidey do his thing however that idea they implemented was exactly the type of mechanic that open world Spider-Man games had been missing or rather what they needed. If Beenox were given more time I can only assume they would have developed that further. Now, Insomniac has recognized the brilliance of that mechanic and are using it but they're also upgrading and making improvements, giving the player more control over how this control is utilized. There is also an upgrade tree for swinging and parkour. And from what I've seen there most certainly is 'weight' to Spidey's movements, physics are involved and webs attach to structures. It's not lazy for Insomniac to take a good idea and advance it, that's called evolution.

As others have pointed out, this game is NOT using the same engine as Beenox. It is Insomniac's engine from Sunset. Watching videos can be deceptive, it's all about feel and for that I would suggest at least giving the game a chance before damning it.

It looks like Insomniac has created what you described. The more complex aspect to the traversal/swinging is left up to the player--if all you want to do is swing, the controls seem fairly simple. But the game looks as though it gives the player the option to create more complex variations and I would guess the upgrades available allow you to increase that depth or whatever. The cool thing though is you don't have to do that if you don't want to.

  1. Spider-Man 3 (Treyarch)
  2. Spider-Man 2 (Treyarch)
  3. Spider-Man + Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro
  4. Ultimate Spider-Man (Treyarch)
  5. Web of Shadows (Gryptonite)
  6. Web of Shadows (Shaba)

Some people here probably remember how I used to hate the open world Web of Shadows game, it grew on me significantly.

Ya know I had a total blast playing Spider-Man 2 on the PS2 back in the day. Put a lot of hours into it. But even to this day, I can't understand why that game didn't have any alternative costumes.

Spider-Man 2 on the ps2 was the best. Oh no, Dr. Connors’ class!

Followed by:

Spider-Man PS1
Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro PS1

Spider-Man 2 (PS2)
Spider-Man (PS1)
Spider-Man 3 (Xbox 360)
Spider-Man: The Movie (PS2)
Spider-Man: Enter Electro (PS1)
Ultimate Spider-Man (PS2)

I haven't played a Spidey game since Spider-Man 3 in 2007 so I'm really looking forward to this one.

I enjoyed Web of Shadows from day 1, the combat really impressed me back then. Plus in that universse, Spidey has orangic webbing, win for me right there.

But again, another game with lack of extra costumes. Or trophy support. If they were to re-release WOS with trophy support, I'd buy it.

Not the Xbox version of the movie? It had Kraven :p

Game Informer mentioned it's a little janky looking how he just snaps into the dive mode, but they said because it's used to gain momentum while swinging, it feels great for Spidey to just plummet at a moments notice. They said it not having any build up or lead into the animation actually helped it in terms of gameplay.

But I agree--it's the least polished animation they've shown.

The L3 dive reminds me of the dive bomb from the Arkham series.
I agree that L3 might be a weird choice, but we also press L3 to sprint in games to go faster, so in that way I can see myself getting used to it.

Just need to tweak that animation before release, make it look even more like the Arkham, specifically Knight, where we could run of the side of a building and instantly go in to that animation, always loved how that looked.

This is quickly becoming my most anticipated game of the year, looking forward to it a lot.

This is killing me (no pun intended)
