Spike Lee To Direct 'Oldboy' remake

Seemed like, going by the trailer, that it'll be hard for Brolin and his daughter to not know each other, least that's how it made it seem. They made it seem like her and everybody else remember this guy. I get the sense that this in no way will be able to work like the original. Our cultures are just too different. I've said before I've never actually seen it but I know what happens and one thing I can't imagine any American doing is cutting out there own tongue out of penance or shame or dishonor or whatever it is. I dunno, it definitely looks damn good. Just don't see how some of the stuff will work yet

25th hour is one of the best American films of that decade. That's what's infuriating. A director like Spike Lee doesn't need to resort to this.
I like the 25th hour but that's a little hyperbowl. Its only a version of Superfly.

i seriously got to watch the original before watching this new version. i did like what i saw in the trailer and this is coming from someone who is not a fan of most of Spike Lee's work.

It has great cast, it seems it's in capable hands and I'm interested what Lee can bring to the table but I'm skeptical based on the twist (which was original) is intact, I'll keep an open mind and even if I don't like it, no biggie as I can appreciate that it'll make people (hopefully) check out Park's adaptation.

It's all about you 'muricans huh.

Well it'll be for just about everywhere that speaks English which is quite a bit. I personally don't like watching foreign films, not saying they're bad by any stretch of the imagination. I know they can be quite good but I just prefer not to read a movie full of subtitles or see bad dubbing. That's why I'm jacked for this, I've heard Oldboy is phenomenal and this looks to be a very high quality remake.

Getting really sick of the film geeks who try to make this movie as the most perfect and best movie of all time.

Seriously get over yourselves. It's not even a original story, it's a adaptation of a manga who actually wrote the story. The only thing that makes the original so overly rated, is the incest. Without the incest, it would be just another typical revenge thriller to me. I never knew people who go so crazy over of incest. What? Is it the shock factor? The boldness to include in a movie. I've seen much more ****ed up movies. Hell watching Antichrist has more shock, and boldness in it.

I'm just not getting it, it's annoying

The original is one of the best movies ever made...adaption or not.

It's an absolutely exceptionally well made, wonderfully absurd, emotional revenge film that paints an equally horrible picture of both the protagonist and antagonist. It cares about its characters and their motivations, and the performances by the actors are absolutely incredible. Also it has one of my favourite ever scores.

To boil this film down to its twist is shallow and silly. It has too much going for it for that.

If she has one American parent and one Asian parent she may not look Asian.
I don't think they would have him sleep with his daughter in a American version it would be too much!even though he didn't know it was his daughter from the trailer it looks like there is a sex scene with brolin and olsen.

So why even come into an Oldboy thread.

I haven't read all of the manga but it seems like it follows it pretty loosely. I thought it was more like West of Zanzibar.

I love Oldboy but nobody and I mean NOBODY does revenge like those old Chaney movies.

Because I'm a huge Manga head and I loved the Oldboy manga.

So why aren't you complaining in all the other forums how all the movies suck compared to their comic book works and that they don't need to be made?

The trailer made me very intrigued. I guess I should watch the original film first.

Did I ever said the movie sucked. All I'm saying is when good movies come to surface, people get these pretentious attitudes towards it. Yes it's a great film but lets not treat as if it's anything more than a great film. Like the world will end if someone else touches the material it was based off. A lot of people don't realize that a lot of great masterpieces are in fact book adaptations or other different mediums.

I love the OldBoy movie for it's his visuals and style and of course the acting, tho I'm not huge on subtitle movies, the text can sometime interfere with the overall visual. Common hierarchy of type, creates a strain on my eyes. So that's why I'm very interested in a English interpretation.

But most don't see that, all they see is how great the original is and treat it as some precious landmark that shouldn't be touched. Or they just simply hate Spike Lee. I controversy, especially in entertainment, never fails to entertain.

that's nice of you to spoil the story for those who didn't read the manwa, nor have seen the movie.

The film came out in 2003. There comes a point when it just shouldn't matter. Though I agree it is poor form to say it in this thread chances are Spike Lee did something different.

it matters for people who didn't see the original back then, and are anticipating the remake. I've seen the korean movie, so I don't care, but we shouldn't forget about those who haven't seen it.

i blame David Chan from Slashfilm about this spoiler hysteria. 5 year old movie? yes. 10 years? NO.

i can spoil Fight Club with a smile on my face. if you are older than 15 years and in 2013 you still have not watchted FC i will hunt you down. i dont care if you are blind.

I am sorry for not having seen every film that's more than 10 years old :whatever: And why does it being foreign make it somehow okay to spoil?

for the record I have seen both oldboy and fight club and most other films known for their twists, but plenty of people haven't for one reason or another and to rob them of the opportunity to experience the films without knowing the plot beforehand is NOT cool:jedi
