Square Enix's Avengers

It's a shame they didn't have enough foresight and planning to capitalize on the popularity of Wandavision by adding Scarlet Witch and Vision as DLC around this time. I get that release schedules change and that there would no way to know for sure of the show's popularity. But, it still would have been great synergy if they had announced Wanda and Vision as the next DLCs coming off the back of the show.

Way back when this project was first rumored, the one Avenger I was most looking forward to was the Scarlet Witch. I was also hoping she would have been in the most recent Marvel vs Capcom game. She's such a cool character with an awesome power set of infinite possibilities. I really wanted to play that character in some form, be it in a fighter or in an action game.

Of course, given the current state of this game, I'd be surprised if they even add any more DLC characters beyond Hawkeye and Spidey on PS4/5. So, the chances of them adding Wanda are looking slimmer and slimmer. :(

If she had been in the initial roster, I probably would have picked up the game (especially on sale) just to play as that character.

I dont see how they could have considering no one knew WandaVision would even be released. Production on that series halted in March bc of the pandemic and didnt resume until Sept when this game was released. Production wrapped up in Nov and we got the announcement for the debut date soon after for Jan 2021. The two Hawkeye DLC were announced around the time that the game came out and they still havent fufilled both of those yet. They never would have been able to do a WandaVision update in time for the show

Upcoming Cosmetic and XP Rework

Uh, it sounds like they're making the game grindier... :funny:
They are atively trying to kill the game. They just made it harder for a newcomer to jump in which is the opposite of what you'd want for a game like this. I was holding off for the PS5 version but Im gonna skip it now

I finished playing the campaign and Kate DLC. I wish I didn't play the Beta of this because it felt like I repeated 1/3 of the game. I enjoyed the early parts of the game that weren't in the Beta. Post-A-day, I liked it when I was going to play another Avenger. However the story campaign of this was like a long 1st act and then two really long missions to wrap up the story. The graphics are mostly good but I didn't like the broken up Avenger story mixed up with the Inhumans and Aim. The characters were flat and most of them needed a better costume. The costumes in the end were terrible, I don't know why they thought that was a good idea to give them Stark-inspired costumes.

I didn't enjoy Kamala as the pov character and I spent most of the game with her. I'm not into legacy characters. I wanted to play the others right away (and not in short segments). I had to wait like 5 days into the game before I get to use Black Widow again. Kamala should have been in a Young Avengers game. She's not someone I think of when it comes to the Avengers. I can't get over how Captain America and Thor only reappeared towards the end. I did some side missions just to play Cap and Thor before the final story mission but not enough. The side missions in this game aren't fun.

My biggest issues with the gameplay is I can't switch characters in the battlefield in an instant, the leveling up system is terrible and those gears are pointless. It takes forever to level up someone. I don't think my selected companions leveled up, I have to play them one by one to level up. I didn't get to see if there are really cool attacks/moves in the skills tree. Even if I did unlock some cool skills I probably didn't notice those because the action here is so chaotic and the camera is shakey. I also didn't want to grind by visiting the regions I've already visited. The enemies are very samey and they resurface so quickly. Sometimes in an open area it was confusing as I knew I already cleared a certain area. The gear system is pointless. I always checked them but I wish they just removed it. The 3 available special skills that you press with r1 and l1 are mostly meh. Most of those special abilities aren't fun and aren't very useful.

I also feel like there are so much clutter in this game. The menu looks crowded. How many of those things in the menu are really useful, not a lot. The character plates and emotes are waste of space. A lot of the collectibles are there for the sake of it and they aren't rewarding. I got all Kamala's comics by accident but I didn't feel any sense of fulfillment. The dozens of alternate costumes required so much amount of something. I'm not gonna pay real money for those.

This game kinda reminds me of X-Men Legends but this one isn't fun at all. I can't even compare this to Spider-Man 2018 because that game did so many things right. I played the Beta last year, the only comic book villain that I didn't encounter before is Modok. I didn't know Monica came from the comics. The villain roster of this is dull. I wish Hank Pym had a better role and he looked like a random npc. I'd be surprised if he eventually becomes playable. There's also platforming here that kinda felt out of place and they were kinda annoying. I feel like this game tried to do many things but everything just felt short.

The only thing that I quite like is the Kate dlc, but thats because I liked playing Kate the most out of the 7, as she was very easy to use. But I still fought mostly the same enemies. The Hawkeye dlc is now intriguing to me.

I'm not gonna suggest Square eniX to abandon this game. Free dlcs are nice. However I prefer if I'm looking forward to a new Avengers game now or a X-Men game. Maybe they could make some difference. But even if they add twenty more playable characters and add intriguing campaign missions, the game mechanics are still the same. I'm quite disappointed with the main campaign. I was thinking of giving it a 5 out of 10 as there's so much potential for an Avengers game. But the Kate dlc gave me some hope.

So, this game, that was already sorely lacking in terms of content, seriously launched without the ability to replay the campaign, and has now taken over half a year to fix that? I am so glad I skipped this game.

Not that this game deserves any credit for doing something good. But adding new game+ after release has been the norm for several years. Use to be a default feature, but developers are lazy now.

So you can't start a new save if you want to play the campaign again? No additional save slots?

I thought the issue was you just couldn't replay the campaign no matter what. You'd have to use a different profile to do it. Games add New Game+, but that is to carry over your current character. I played through God of War twice before the New Game+ hit.

Also, I don't think it's developers being lazy. It's a time thing. Releases are all time tight these days. Not a lot of breathing room to deal with the bells and whistles.

I forgot to mention in my review, but is there a map button for this? I always feel likegoing in circles and a map could have been useful.

Two other things I liked are, the home screen with the characters standing look nice, very Ultimate Alliance. I also like the loading screens especially they are going to add the dlc characters in those loading. I'm intrigued if Black Panther and Spidey will have their own room in the helicarrier. There's only 1 unopened room. And it would have been nice to also walk around outside the helicarrier.

Okay, I played this some more and damn... I finished those "iconic" side missions but the continuations of those are locked? So I can't get the Thor/Loki ending just yet so I'm guessing I need to do the other side quests that I haven't checked yet.

And I can't visit 1 certain location because my level/power aren't enough. And the other side quests are like that too.

Quite annoying.

My cynical "I have no evidence" random guess would be "Someone's bad idea from marketing". After all, if most of the MTX-encouraging grind is in the postgame multiplayer element, then you want people playing that, *not* the single player story campaign. So why not just prevent people from replaying the campaign, that way they have to play the thing which gives the studio money. Win!

My money would be on not wanting people to max their level out on the single player, and thus be able to skip the horrid grind. So, pretty similar. :D

Good news. I haven’t played since it released. Downloaded the free upgrade today. Looking forward to finishing the main story. Doing the Kate Bishop and Hawkeye stuff. Excited for Black Panther and hopefully with the roadmap now, things are going in the right direction.

I still want them to fix the leveling and looting etc. They just made it much harder apparently to do that stuff. They need more variety as well with more playable characters and especially more villains. There’s so much potential. So I hope they start to trend towards making improvements now and tapping into the potential that’s there.

As much as I appreciate the effort.... later this year screams Q4 to me?

I'd feel excited if there are more new characters in the roadmap bcos aside from the Hawkeye/BP dlc. The rest are just other ways to grind in the game.

Wrap it up, it's done. They are going to have one new character before the end of summer... maybe.

I don't blame the developer. I blame the publisher. This game came out at least a year early. Some of the stuff they are adding is the kind of end game content that is the bare minimum and should have been there at launch.

Given the state of release, it was absolutely released to make a quarterly deadline. And I understand that Covid development was a *****. Frankly, Crystal Dynamics should be grateful for CDPR for taking the heat off them. But the also really, really needed to hit the breaks on the new content promises.
