Square Enix's Avengers

Its not like all Marvel games have been excellent in the past. Most Marvel games are average, if not below average. So I dont see why Marvel's standards suddenly became so high, that they are gonna scrap a console game that already started marketing.

Back in the day their were a few great Marvel Console games

1. X-Men : Legends (1 & 2)
2. Marvel Ultimate Alliance
3. Spider-Man 2

The mission statement from Jay Ong a few years ago was that the 'new' Marvel Gaming will work with the best AAA developers in the industry and establish a new standard moving forward. What happened in the past is completely irrelevant. Spider-Man started the new era with a bang. This game was supposed to be the next step....Unfortunately it's felt off from the start and been underwhelming to a large number of fans. Many are unhappy with the overall look, character models, gameplay, voice acting, and the fact that the very first AAA Avengers game which has 60 years of history to draw from decided to make a very new character in Kamala Khan a main protagonnist. Let's just call that an insult to many Avengers fans and no doubt this game must have started development in the failed Axel Alonso days where the company was more interested in telling fans what was good for them over entertaining them with the classic characters they love. I might have agreed with the idea, but the execution was off. So this is not a slight to Kamala Khan or her fans, she just doesn't belong as a major character in the first AAA Avengers game. A main charcter down the road fair enough, but it just feels a tad disingenuous right out of the gate. Funny thing is I like her design the best, go figure. Another disappointment added to the mix. I'm with Neptune and many others, I'll spend my money elsewhere. If others like it great, I'll likely get to it eventually, but it's just a failure in concept imho.

We'll see the difference in sales between this and Spider-Man PS4. It should be as big, but I'd be shocked.

I'm excited for this. It obviously won't reach the level of Spider-Man PS4, but I'm not a huge gamer, so spending my money on this isn't a huge deal for me since I only buy a few games a year anyway.

MARVEL'S AVENGERS Producer On Why They Chose Kamala Khan, A.K.A. Ms. Marvel, To Be The Game's Protagonist
Following the release of a few previews devoted to the young hero, Marvel's Avengers producer Rose Hunt has revealed why they ultimately chose to make Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, a huge part of the story.Read more

After plenty of speculation from fans and a few teases in the A-Day prologue, Crystal Dynamics finally confirmed Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, as a playable hero and revealed that she plays an integral role in the main story.

While most fans are just excited to play as the young hero, some have been curious to know why she was chosen for this role. After all, with hundreds of popular characters to choose from it must be difficult to pick just one hero.

Well, during EGX 2019 in London, senior producer Rose Hunt spoke with the folks at IGN and shed some light on why they ultimately went with the relatively new hero, highlighting her relatability as a key factor.

“When Marvel brought [Kamala Khan] up as a possibility for us, we were super excited about her,” Hunt said. “Because she's a fan girl like us. She's a fan of the Avengers like the whole world is, so we thought that she would be a super relatable character to be our protagonist.”

Of course, the fact that Khan reflects many real life fans of the Avengers wasn't the only thing motivating the developer's as they also liked the freedom that came with a hero that's only been around for a few years.

"And another advantage of her is that she doesn't have 80 years of history, like Captain America or some of the other Avengers. And that allows us to actually tell more of an original story with her, because her story has just begun, and we can build on that in very interesting ways."
Marvel's Avengers is scheduled to launch on May 15, 2020 and boasts an impressive voice cast that includes Nolan North as Iron Man, Troy Baker as Bruce Banner, Jeff Schine as Captain America, Laura Bailey as Black Widow, and Travis Willingham as Thor.

Well Mission statements are usually for PR and we know pr usuallydoes a lot of spinning. And no company would admit that their upcoming product is gonna be average or below average.

That being said, Kamala Khan definitely decreased my interest to this. I guess I would just really wait for a price cut before I pick it up.

How/why did she decrease your interest in this?

It seems the roster on this is going to be pretty diverse. Theres room for avengers both young and old. Plus we have hulk, ironman, cap, thor, widow, ant man, and Hawkeye confirmed. Black panther and captain marvel are pretty much a given. I'm also willing to bet we get scarlet witch, vision, maybe quicksilver, and she hulk over time.

I think there's a lot of hypocrisy in this reasoning. By your own admission "Spider-Man started the new era with a bang."

Spider-Man had major changes to the canon not even limited to Miles being in the main universe (with playable stealth levels of Miles in the game) and playable Mary Jane levels with her as a journalist. Peter's been Spider-Man for years with no Green Goblin. The Harry/Venom thing being set up for the sequel.

So how were you able to look past the changes in making a modern adaptation for Spider-Man as quality but then start talking about how this game is a "failure in concept" because a newer but massively popular character is one of the characters in it? Were you writing essays about how Into the Spider-Verse was an "insult" to fans because Miles was the main character and Peter was comic relief/a chubby slob? Were you penning essays about skipping out on the MCU because they dared to not make Hank and Janet founding Avengers and for the hundreds of other changes to canon it's made?

Y'all are massively overanalyzing "main character." Do you think they made the trouble of programming six playable characters all different to have the majority of levels be one character? She's the "main character" in the sense that she's the audience perspective into this world. It'd sound exposition-y as hell to have people explain to Hulk or Hawkeye how this world works when they've been a major player in it already. She's the main character in the sense that Rogue was the main character in X-Men 1.

Honestly, an "insult"? That's astonishingly entitled. Like you said, it's the first AAA Avengers game. As in we aren't owed one, if they decided not to make it then we might not have any Avengers game period (Marvel would have looked to fund another game, but another studio might have wanted to do a specific hero like how Insomniac basically got offered whatever was interesting but they wanted to do Spider-Man.) Your idea of an "insult" to fans isn't that characters' powers, motivations, personality or anything like that is bastardized, your idea of an insult to fans is that a character who in the comics came along after the Avengers have been established for years is...in the game coming along after the Avengers have been established for years. It's not even like they're making Kamala a founding Avenger in the game, she's the kid that shows up years down the line.

Yeah, Kamala is a newer character. But she's been around for years now and just as much as Miles resonated with fans. Miles and Spider-Gwen are pretty much just as new as Kamala and they were front and center in Into the Spider-Verse. It only took Venom a few years to be just as much of a presence in Spider-Man media as all the villains that had been there for decades. Cyborg got freaking retconned into being a founding Justice League member.

On another note, I think it's entirely possible that the game ends up pretty good and that they just made a mistake in showing the tutorial level as the first big gameplay peek. Tutorials are designed to hold your hand through basic concepts and what each button does. I get that their intent was to give us a taste of all those characters, but honestly they'd have been better off showing a few minutes from a late-game Thor or Iron Man level.

It's just strange that your'e skipping this game for not following 616 continuity to the T but Spider-Man and presumably the Arkham games get a pass.

(For the record, I loved Into the Spider-Verse and the Spider-Man PS4 game)

Kamala looks good, and Thor's hair helped a bit, now if they can just fix those costumes

It looks like I'll like the character upgrade stuff, but I'm in the disappointed camp for Ms. Marvel is serving as the "main" character.

I get what they're going for. But there are more historically Avengers-tied characters that could fill that role. She's a relative newcomer to the Avengers scene, and this really is the first AAA Avengers-specific game.

That said, X-Men Legends did the same thing with Magma, someone I also didn't give a **** about. Once you got through the tutorial with her, you never had to see her again. If that's the way they use Kamala here, I'm cool.

I do think that overall, people are just disappointed they didn't get the movie actors to be a part of this. And that's where a lot of the negativity seems to be coming from. I think the game is going to be just fine.

Idk, I don't think many people wanted the movie actors in there
But I will say that Nolan North and Troy Baker have become so ubiquitous in gaming that its becoming an issue for me, every time I see Tony speak in the game I'll be thinking "C'mon Drake, why you got that silly little goatee?"

Nothing to fix the default costumes are what they are. There will be lots of variants and new costumes you can apply if you don’t like the default ones.

That's basically what all the negative headlines said when we first saw this, isn't it? People calling it the bootleg Avengers because they couldn't get the name brand actors?

Nah, it was more because they looked (and Cap and Thor still do) like bad cosplayers, that's what they meant by "Budget/Bootleg Avengers"

nobody expected it to use the actors and movie costumes, just to look on the same level as SpideyPS4... Pete in that game looked nothing like Tom Holland, but he still looked like Spider-Man

Admittedly, its a very tough line to walk, I don't envy the artists working on any comic-related game, but Insomniac pulled it off, so did Rocksteady with Batman

Ah, gotchya. Yeah, the costumes leave something to be desired. But there are enough variants that I'm sure it'll be fine.

Just wish the base costumes were better. That happened in the Spider-Man game; the unlockable costumes were great. But I kept going back to the game's default because of how good it was.

So I’m gonna assume that we’re gonna get skins from the Black Widow film. Just like Marvel Spider-Man had all of Tom Holland’s suits available.

I’d like to see the white Snowsuit from the film.

Same thought I had. I could do without that aspect of it (as much of a fan of Kamala's as I am), but as long as there's a good amount of freedom in selecting characters for gameplay, it shouldn't be an issue.

The gear upgrade/RPS aspect might hold some promise.
