Square Enix's Avengers

Haven't played this yet. I heard the story has potentially written out the Inhuman Royal family.

The terrigen crystals are man made and not from the Inhumans. Is this true?

That doesn't mean the Royal family couldn't still appear, but the person that informed me of this made it seem like they were trying to block the idea of the Royals, Attilan etc.

I mean, its a mutant story swapped out with Inhumans.

I need them to announce Scarlet Witch or someone that isn't an archer or a close combat Avenger.

Had fun finally getting to play Thor. I’d like a solo game for him.

yeah his part in the prologue was good like when he said for I am mighty before picking up a car that was pinning down a person. and I LOVE using his hammer how you can throw it and call it back etc (plus I loved how the controller vibrated when you used it).

Okay the escape with Cap America was cool.

I have a question for those on PS4 playing multiplayer. Are you having issues with match making? Because I was drawn to looking at the Steam numbers for PC, and they aren't good. I am just curious if Spider-man has drawn that many people away, or if the game is in trouble.

I didn't buy the game, but I did try the beta and it was a pain to get connected to others. I read that others were having match making problems at the time. Maybe that carried forward into the release version? Your best bet is to find a buddy or two to invite.

I use AI, so don't know.

Number of players dipping below 1K on Steam is definitely not good for this type of game. Even Euro Truck Simulator 2 has over 26K concurrent players at this moment! :funny:

I don't think not being able to play Spidey was/is a major factor but the fact the game is just meh to many players? They probably got bored with the gameplay loop in multiplayer and once they've gone through the decent SP campaign, well there's not much point playing... Let's see if they'll come back when the Hawkeye/Kate DLC releases.

I do wonder about the sale numbers which CD/Squeenix haven't release any yet (AFAIK).

I feel like this game came and went even though it was #2 for Uk's physical sales, in the week Mafia remake charted at #3.

I think the lesson here is not everybody wants multiplayer and that online multiplayer doesn't automatically sell. I wish they just focused on the single player campaign as that one came across as the better part of the game in the reviews despite being quite short.

I also think the lack of a clear road map for this is a problem. Watch Dogs Legion's post launch content already has a date, well the first one. This one has been released for more than a month, and still no actual date for Hawkeye's debut. How is everyone who already bought this game going to keep with every major update. Personally if I bought this back in September it would have been uninstalled by now so it won't automatically get the updates. I'm skeptical that they keep this up for years. They should have just planned a six month post launch road map and released everything in that period. And move on to a sequel that is way better.

Yoong Yea covers this a bit and goes over the lack of end game content. Sadly it does seem like the game essentially launched as a beta with little to encourage players to keep playing.

At this rate will they even make it to a year down the road with more content to offer?

Probably not.

The only thing I could suggest is Abandon Hellicarrier and move forward with the sequel that has at least ten playable Avengers with a single player campaign longer than ten hours. That could be cheaper than maintaining and developing side multiplayer content for years.

I said before that its rare that post launch content get more attention that the launch game content.... so yikes, even if they release Dr. Strange, Black Panther and Capitan Marvel in the next update, this game already peaked in terms of public interest. And this low number of online players this early , is a big concern.

They should have had it set at the Avengers Tower and not just done AIM. It was frustrating going up against the same bots and nobodies. They could have used any D List villains and sprinkled them through the campaign.

I think it will be a matter of wait and see what happens when they add raids and new characters. Maybe they can save some face, but I don't see Avengers being a large community even if it brings some players back.

Yeah. That was a big part of why I didn't buy the game. I felt like I played most of it in the beta. Just seems like a bizarre choice to launch with only three Marvel villains and for the main bad guy to unironically be Modok. Unless this is just chapter 1 of an overarcing story and each additional character will provide substantial updates, then my criticism is that they really should have communicated that to players.

Also, like I've said before, the story isn't a natural starting point for the Avengers. It's more a story you tell several games in because it feels like the end of the team and a rebirth of a new one. It ruins any chance of telling an actual Avengers Disassembled adaptation that leads into New Avengers because that would feel like a rehash.

The style of game is flawed, especially for a casuals game. I side eyed this game from the start, and they never changed my mind. The "beta" was an awful idea. It revealed just how shallow the game is.

The biggest problem here is seems to be the publisher. Instead of a big single player game, that could have been stellar, they forced the developer to split the baby, leading it a good but underserved SP, and a completely crap MP. They could add another 50 Avengers, and it won't change that the gameplay loop is bad. Fighting a bunch of drones in slightly different boxes for blah loot is not a game people are going to stick with.
