Mystery/Thriller Squid Game

Excellent season with lots of deaths, suspense & emotional punches made impactful by some absolutely first-rate acting. Nevertheless, I'm still bothered by the lack of closure.

The deaths of Park Yong-sik (007) & his mother Jang Geum-ja (149) were tough to watch because they were such well-crafted characters. Same with Cho-Hyun-ju.

I can’t praise the acting enough. Squid Game has similarities to GoT with regards to acting & the suspenseful deaths of rich, story-filled characters.

On the negatives:
  • I find it very hard to believe many people still opted to continue before the participants narrowed down to the “trash”. Majority seemed to be simply desperate people with morals still intact before we got to the true scums.
  • No clear explanation of the origins. Perhaps they want to leave this to the imagination of the viewers, but a 20, 30m deep-dive into the basics of the origins & management would've been great.
  • Terrible acting by the VIPs, thankfully their screen-time was limited so it wasn't an issue.

It wasn't a perfect ending but I mostly loved this season and honestly it's easily my favorite of the three seasons eventhough this wasn't a real Season 3 but more of a part 2 or a continuation of Season 2.

The CGI baby was distracting at first but I began to get use to it and the finale was a bit underwhelming and unsatisfying but man did I get pretty emotional during the deaths of Cho Hyun-ju, Jang Geum-ja, Kang Sae-byeok and Seong Gi-hun which was the most surprising IMO but it definitely felt earned.

I also wanted way more of a payoff with Lee Byung-hun's character and that whole relationship with his brother but I get a feeling he will definitely show up again in either a spinoff show or a movie if Netflix continues to milk this franchise going forward.

Also, the Cate Blanchett cameo was pretty interesting and makes me wonder if she will show up in the Fincher version.

Season 1 remains my favourite. Actually the acting has been consistently great throughout the entire run.

I'm not gonna lie, after such a fantastic first season, these last two were just awful. It's pretty clear the creator had no new ideas beyond that initial season, or even any plan of what might happen going forward. So many new concepts and character dynamics were explored in s1, while 2 & 3 showcased some of the worst streaming bloat I've seen in awhile. The onslaught of new characters were never afforded many opportunities for character development, so when they died I found it difficult to care. And the returning cast barely had anything to do, and if anything they regressed. I don't blame the actors, though, as they all did the best they could with what they were given (aside from the VIPs).

The characters also had to act in the dumbest possible ways to ensure that the plot kept advancing. Whenever the opportunity presented itself to make the worst possible choice, the characters never failed to take it. It was hard to sympathize with people that were both stupid and cruel. Introducing something like voting was not only nonsensical (if a majority voted to leave then the show would be over), but an active time waster. The show seemed more interested in coasting on the tropes of s1 instead of introducing anything new. Explaining the games and depicting as much torture porn as possible seemed to be the sole motivation this time around.

Nothing was really gained with these new episodes, it would've been better to leave it as a miniseries.

Finished it and... That was pretty bad! episode 3 and 6 were OK, but the rest... pretty awful.
I found the writing of this "season"(I'll call it part 2 of season 2) really bad. This last 6 episodes were way too rediculous. I also think the show lost all its credibility(in the world they build for the show) in this 6 episodes(well mostly at the last 3 episodes). I think the biggest mistake they did for season 2 was bring in a pregnant player, and they really lost all of their credibility, when
the baby player enter the games.
The VIP was a big waste of time Not just for their acting but also for the bad writing of the characters. I was really disapointed from where this season went to.
If the knew from the start where 456 gonna end, they should have killed him off earlier and let someone else become the main character.

While seasons 2 and 3 weren't as good as the first, I was still entertained enough to keep binging. My jaw dropped at the Cate Blanchett cameo in the final episode.

Also I had to look this up and learning that the VIPs don't actually talk like that in real life is reassuring.

Netflix is going to keep making Squid Game spin-offs until people soundly say no mas.

They literally made an actual game-show spin-off of the original series. That's how crazy this phenomenon is. A game show with actual contestants inspired by Squid Game came out before the second and third seasons.

The creator probably wanted to make them sound that way on purpose.

Even if it was done to make the VIPs seem inhuman or otherworldly, it's still blatantly distracting.

I think it's what you suggested, wanting them to sound inhuman and otherworldly. Their wealth has made them so detached that they view these desperate people as an alien culture observing humans. I don't care for it either, mind you. But I suspect the creator didn't want to humanize the VIPs.

Now that's just my hypothesis. It could just be what the actor for one of the VIPs stated, and an issue of how they English-speaking actors reading dialogue translated to English from another language, so it sounds awkward.
