Discovery Star Trek: Discovery - Part 1

So I just used my discount month of CBS All Access to catch up on this season and...huh. I REALLY liked the first few episodes, but man, did it go downhill. The burn storyline just got pretty darn boring really fast, no? The only episodes I enjoyed in the latter half were Philippa’s swan song eps. I’ll still watch next season, largely because I have a hard time imagining what Burnham will be like as Captain and wanna see how that goes, but this was overall a big step down from S2, imo.

I’m far more interested in Strange New Worlds at this point.

It must be official... I am no longer a Star Trek fan. Dammit. :argh:

I’ve waded through three seasons of Discovery and been left utterly non-invested the entire run. Maybe with the exception of a couple of Pike episodes.
Picard was simply uninspiring, boring and made shocks just because they could...
Tried Lower Decks and have not laughed at a single thing in any episode I have watched. The one thing I will give it is that it is the only new Trek that feels like a legitimate follow on from the TNG/DS9/VOY era. And it’s a bloody comedy cartoon!

My last chance is for when the Pike/Spock/Number One series comes out. Is it telling I can’t even remember the name?
Hah, I should have read the previous post... Strange New Worlds.

For those that enjoy all the new stuff, good for you. You lot must have young minds with fresh ideas... :cwink:

Edit:
At least I have The Orville... :D

The Pike show will be the Obi Wan of the new Trek shows.

Edit: I hope it will...resistance if made of hope after all but hope clouds judgment. Triple geek combo !

Finally got around to watching Discovery S3 on CBS All Access, and boy was I surprised! I have to say, I enjoyed it far more than I thought I would, it's a big step up from the previous seasons and the future settings feels right. The odd thing here is that I feel the weak points in this season are when they focused more on Burman and when they focused more on the others in the cast it felt significantly stronger. I just feel, personally, that the actress playing Burman is constantly chewing scenery here and it brings everything down. Perhaps it just felt that way because she wasn't the captain and it was odd that so much of the focus on her? We'll see if she proves me wrong in the next season.

Random opinion: These future Starfleet suits are slick I love that the grey has carried over from D9/Voyager days and the single stripe along the side is a very nice touch.

It was also a delight to see a next-gen here, I yelled out "WHAT" when that happened, also, I wish we got some clearer shots of all these new ships.

I know there is be criticism's here for the overall story, but overall I felt as though the Starfleet we see by season's end is the Starfleet we all know and love, and to me that sets up a very promising S4. I think they just need to reel in Burman more, and could they be going done a more episodic feel moving forward? All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this season, it had its weak points, but the strengths outweigh them imo, I don't even think you have to watch the first two seasons to get into Discovery now which is perfect, just avoid all that nonsense altogether.

Finally caught up on season 3 and for me this was the least enjoyable one yet. I am no Trekkie but loved season 1 and enjoyed season 2 a lot as well, this season had some good parts but overall they rarely led anywhere interesting when really this was the first season they had free reign.

Hope things get better next season.

The new uniforms are....not bad but I dont think I'm a fan of the coat like structure of them and them being asymmetrical.

I don't mind the asymmetrical uniforms, but not liking the vibrancy of them so much - especially when we take into account we've only recently had a change from their disco variants anyway at the end of last season, and they've changed them again? Already?

I certainly hope this anomaly isn't just another distressed Kelpian... .. .

I like the vibrant colours but am not a fan of the coat or asymmetrical look. The loose-fitting jacket makes Burnham look a bit pregnant, unless she is really in real life.

Why are they changing their uniforms already anyway? I thought they just got some bland grey ones at the end of last season. They didn't last long. Anyway I prefer the classic primary colours of Star Trek uniforms although I don't see much blue there among the crew. Shouldn't the doctor have blue?

When exactly is this coming back? In December? It says coming soon though and it looks like they've already filmed a fair amount so far. When did they do this since Season 3 only aired recently and seemed to be delayed because of production. When was Season 3 anyway? Was it this at the end of last year?

I read online they updated the uniforms so they wouldn't blend in with the sets so much. They needed that pop of color.

Is there going to be an onscreen explanation for that and how they've switched to new uniforms? Or are they just going to gloss over that? Grey was so bland anyway so I'm glad they got rid of that colour. Star Trek: The Slow Motion Picture also had very bland uniforms but fortunately they went to red and black for The Wrath of Khan.

I wouldn't mind if they went back to red for security and operations though instead of for command. Now the whole concept of disposable red shirts is just something metaphorical instead of literal ever since TNG.

I dont see why they would address it. They spent all of 5 seconds in the last ones and we know the Federation updates uniforms time from time. It was just that time.

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, I think some versions of the medical uniform were white. (I think.) But in subsequent movies and TV, medical were (back to) “science blue.”

Colors Pt. 2 ...

In the DISCO season 3 finale (and the season 4 preview), it appears that the color code swap established by TNG is being maintained. I.e., red = command and gold = operations/engineering.

Meanwhile, over at Strange New Worlds, the TOS color scheme (gold = command, red = operations) is being followed.

I thought she was at some point, though unsure if that's recent.

Only if they were intending to mimic TOS; maybe in the 31st Century, Doctors stay white?

I wouldn't have minded a little more variation though; red or gold for command, orange for engineering, yellow for security or operations, blue for science, purple or green for medical? Not that we'd want to be going through the entire spectrum here.

I'm not sure we needed the red/yellow/blue though. Seems a bit dated. ENT & TOS had one theme, everything from TNG onwards has another?

Apparently she gave birth to a daughter in July 2020. So I guess she was pregnant. Depends when Season 4 was filmed though and how quickly she lost the baby weight.

Enterprise's uniforms were more similar to Discovery's uniforms - all in blue.

It was TOS, TNG, DS9 and VOY that had the red, yellow and blue colour scheme for their uniforms. Then around the 6th season DS9 got the grey uniforms similar to First Contact, but with red, yellow and blue jumpers underneath their jackets.

I am definitely going to miss the primary grey uniforms w/ the accent colors, I know there's the opinion that they are too bland (which is somewhat valid) but they were the uniforms I enjoyed the most. Plus, they were tied to the Star Trek I loved the most growing up, the movies with Picard & Co. and DS9:

So it was a nice homage to those uniforms but done with a more modern aesthetic

Although I do understand the why behind the choice to go back to a more color centric uniform moving forward - Season 3 saw the Federation having lost its way or who they were to the galaxy, at the end of the season we see the Discovery crew bring back what the Federation meant to the galaxy and what they stood for or rather the root of the Federation. So narratively, it makes sense for the Federation to embrace its pop of color more from the TOS and TNG days, a nice touch I'd say.

Uniforms aside, I hate seeing a Burnham romance every single season, it's always cringing and it always seems forced. It reminds me of the last season of Voyager when the writers forced Chakotay and Seven into a romance that also didn't work.

Looking forward to this season, let's hope it doesn't suck.

Actually ENT introduced colours too, though they obviously weren't so obvious.
