Discovery Star Trek: Discovery - Part 1

I think the early directives for Star Trek was for it to be "prestige" TV, in order to bring in the audiences to Paramount+. Discovery season 1 and 2 and Picard season 1 definitely were affected by that.

It may not have been for me, but I respect this show for testing out the waters for modern Trek.

Not a fan of Picard and Discovery, but I know they have their fans. And it ultimately got us Strange New Worlds, which is the best Trek series in years, so enjoy what you like.

Oh no, I’m devo about this. The shorter seasons feel like the characters were just starting to be developed. But at least they get to finish it

Instead of sending them to the future they should've sent them to the mirrorverse and make an impact there.

Them trying to make Burnham into the most important character in ST history was just forced.

They basically wanted the audience to believe she is Space Jesus. They wanted you to believe she could solve every single problem. They wanted you to think she is the most important character in the history of Star Trek. She is a second-rate commander who should have never been promoted to Captain. The wokeness... the over-the-top sensitivity... the way this show messed with canon... the terrible scripts and dialogue... If you are a fan of STD, that's cool. I hope this brought you to discover other Star Trek shows and films. I think this is the worst Star Trek ever produced and I truly believe this shows why Alex Kurtzman should be replaced by Terry Matalas ASAP.

To be honest, the only other character on STD that I think is worse than Michael Burnham is Sylvia Tilly. Put Tilly on the Cario under Captain Edward Jellico and she would last maybe a day until he would transfer her off.

It's not wokeness as there's nothing with being woke. It's just bad writing.

People ocmplaining Star Trek is woke is always amusing.
The funniest part is them complaining that NEW Trek shows are woke....guess they never heard about Kirk and Uhura sharing the first interracial kiss on American TV, or how many southern stations refused to show some episodes of original Trek because they featured black actors in non-subserviant roles, of how Martin Luther King praised the show for its depiction of black people in ways no other show of that time was doing. Yeah....funny how Trek only became woke recently.

I was glancing through the stats of the past Trek shows. Back in the day, a common episode count was 26 per season. :wow: (The lowest was season one of VOY at 16; and season one of TOS was 29! :wow::wow::wow:) So even if DISCO had managed seven seasons, it’d be with the more modest/streaming model episode count (10-13ish) — an apples-to-oranges comparison.

I'm not a Discovery fan, but complaining about a Star Trek series as not following in the footsteps of past Trek because of "wokeness" or "sensitivity" is
2b7c5c56-633a-442d-9019-75c4020794b8_text.gif

You know we are talking about a franchise that is about an aspirational, optimistic future where humans live in a diverse socialist utopia where money and capitalism have been abolished? Where ships in the 24th century have ship's counselors because feelings, sensitivity, and mental health are important and prioritized?

Trek has always been and always should be "woke" and "sensitive". I want it no other way. It is a big part about what I like about it.

Matalas is a better writer than Kurtzman for sure, but neither of them is doing anything close to what Trek deserves. I like Picard a fair bit (season one mostly) but its third season is the safest, laziest thing you could possibly do with Trek at this point - it's a lot of fun, but there's nothing particularly creative or challenging or unique about it.

I just started watching season 1 of this never saw the show had NO idea about what happens to Michael so early in the series wow.

I'm definitely in the minority that Discovery got better once it moved over to the future. The minute you write something like a spore drive, you should've placed your stories in the future, end of discussion. For them to think we would buy into the entire crew of the Enterprise never speaking about the crew of Discovery as if they never existed is just mindblowing, especially when the biggest secret in Trek, section 31, was so blatantly not a secret here lmao. Once they get there, everything works better for me and I love the aesthetic of future ships & starbases. Plus those gray suits.. my heart fall in love. Martin-Green can be quite the screen chewer, not gonna lie there, but when they focus on spreading the love amongst the main cast is when they are at their best. I appreciate them helping to push Trek forward just a bit and out of the Next Generation/Voyager/Deep Space Nine Era, and give us a peak at what the future of the Federation can look like, although I have to admit I am loving Lower Decks & Prodigy taking place in that previous era (just a bit after it) because I need to see what my favorites from DS9 and Voyager are up to. The question here is.. now that we're losing 2 live-action series (Picard & Discovery) what do you folks want to see them focus on next in live-action? My vote is anything that isn't a prequel, pretty please.

I agree it got better once they went to the future but that does not mean it was what it should have been either. Their biggest failure was setting up "The Burn" and then spending an entire season on it trying to figure it out only for it to be the dumbest resolution they could blindly throw darts at.

Outside of that, rebuilding the Federation was fine. In fact it could have been the focal point of the season instead of that mess. There are plenty of ways to have found the Federation in disrepair but this was the least interesting one.

Oh, that's completely valid - The burn was weak. It was an interesting concept but poorly executed and that's putting it mildly. Plus, it was a missed opportunity not having episodic adventures when their mission was repairing the Federation and getting other races/species to rejoin/join, I would have loved to see how the Klingons were doing or see more of the Cardassians & Bajorans given the admiral was a mix of them both and what we know of the conflict between both. Still, going that far into the future kept me intrigued throughout, so I was a big ole fan of the future jump because I was not digging the prequel stuff they were messing with in the earlier seasons.

I It was bad enough it started by changing the past, but then went into the far future and changed that too.

Huh? I don't know everything about Trek by any means, but there was no history to the 32nd century before this show, to my knowledge. So how can "changing" something that was created on this show be a problem?

It means that when the show started it was a precursor to the classic shows. Now it has also become a look at where we might go. So it selfishly has taken up 2 spots in the timeline. All the old shows now have this as their possible future. Which before season 3 they did not. So that is a change on how we look at the future of Star Trek going forward.

But with time travel who really knows. It could all just have been an alternate reality. I have said before that there has been so much time travel in all of Star Trek you probably don't really have a Prime timeline anymore, just a bunch of various similar ones. So the people we think we know from other shows might just be varied in the slightest way that they are actually not the same people. We just don't know how time travel affected the timelines.

So the cut begin!!!

Can’t lie and say I’m gutted or going to miss the Show, I enjoyed the first Two Seasons, the jump to the future was fun but the “Burn” storyline and reveal of what caused it was pants…

Haven’t watched Season 4 since it left Netflix UK, I heard good things but overall haven’t felt the need or want to watch Season 4…

I still think setting it Pre TOS was a mistake, the change to the Klingons and the Starfleet Ship designs never sat well with me and my OCD canon brain, but saying that I wouldn’t of got Captain Pike and Strange New Worlds so guess I’ll take the good with the bad.

On a side note for a prequel Show, it be the first Star Trek Show since Star Trek: Enterprise and TOS that hasn’t got 7 Seasons!!! Maybe this proof that prequel Shows aren’t needed? Unless your name Pike and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds!!!

Going to miss Star Trek: Discovery?
