Oh I definitely, I haven't seen the film so I can't really argue against or for assessment.

I am also not the biggest fan of his need to attack others opinions, while claiming he is entitled to his own. He didn't like it, okay. But everyone else who does is suddenly gutless?

It sounds like the one reservation people have with TFA is the same they had with "Creed": it's a retread, but a great one. "Creed" has a 93% on RT.

I predict we'll hear over the next few years from cynics that TFA was "fan service". I don't think that's a bad thing, especially since SW fans haven't been served anything worthwhile in 30 years.

It's like the theory I had: JJ was brought on to do a "bridge" film. One people wanted, but not necessarily needed. One the warmed people back into SW. And that's fine, in the end. Since it's well done, and the characters, tone, humor are done justice, it'll indeed go down like Creed (dare I say, Skyfall, too?)

Looks like Rian's gonna deliver the big stuff. JJ did the "pilot" and set the mood, bringing the audiences in and making them comfortable, Rian will hopefully destroy our minds and write the big finale, which will be relative easy work for CTrev to not completely f**k up.

The thing is that trying to reinvent the Star Wars wheel is such a near impossible task that fan service is the smartest move by LucasFilm (at least until the trilogy finds it's own footing).

Comparisons to ESB is going to be the knee jerk criticism since his film is the second in the trilogy.

97 again, now that Mendelson weighed in. Looks like all the negative reviews (will) all have one thing in common: That's it a requel. Which is more than fair enough. But none so far have talked about bad acting, direction, etc etc.

Wow, as I'm waking up with my coffee at 10A EST it's at 98%. That is awesome, awesome news.

(Still avoiding reading any reviews/spoilers, I'll see it this coming weekend probably.)

A rising tide lifts all boats, so it bodes well for all the fantasy adventure blockbusters to follow in 2016. It's a fantastic launch to a slew of other films over the next twelve months in this vein.

What an amazing year 2016 should be. Deadpool in February is already a safe bet to be a smash, I think. Batman v Superman and Captain America: Civil War this spring. (I doubt either of these will top TFA at the box office, but if BvS is truly an epic masterpiece, this launch for the JL just might.) And then in the summer we've got Star Trek: Beyond and Suicide Squad. And in the fall Gambit, Dr. Strange, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

It's oddly simultaneously disappointing and relieving that the one major thing I was concerned about seems to be the one major across the board criticism. Dissappointing to not have the film blow past that expectation, but relieving that everything else seems so good that it's easily forgivable.

I'm kind of dreading my good friend's reaction though. He's one of the hardcore "it better not be a remake of IV!!" people.

In all seriousness, they're obviously entitled to their opinion, and I do genuinely respect that. But something like this now conjures an image of Max Landis on Collider Heroes yesterday in my head. *shiver*
