State of Decay

I've managed to keep all my characters alive thus far, there were a few close calls. I fast opened a drawer that bought down a horde on me but otherwise I've been pretty good about not taking on large numbers of zombies - at least not without NPC's to back me up.

How does that work? Like will the horde end up breaking into the house? How large are the hordes?

I was out with another character and when I got back and tried to switch back to Maya, my main, I was informed she is missing.

Hordes seem like 10-15 zombies, and yeah they will smash through the windows and such. Room to room fighting can get nasty quick so its better to face them out in the open.

State of Decay Still En Route To PC, Though Who Knows When

I first watched Chris playing the enjoyable-looking (and hugely popular) Xbox 360 zombie survival game State of Decay, I've wanted to dive in and play it. But I've also wanted to wait for it to come to PC. Good news, then: The game is certainly going to arrive on Steam, though it's still not clear when.

As spotted by PCGamesN, one of State of Decay's main makers Jeff Strain had this response for Xbox Wire when asked, "What's next for State of Decay?"

We're currently working on a PC version for release on Steam. Fortunately it's been in development alongside the Xbox 360 version since Day 1, so we just need to integrate with the Steam platform and add native support for keyboard and mouse control. We'll also continue to issue Title Updates at a fast pace to refine game balance and fix bugs.

(And I gotta say: PC version info sneaking onto an official Xbox news site? Ha.)

This comes a week and a half after Undead Labs community director Sanya Weathers told Rock, Paper Shotgun “We are still working on the PC version, and I don’t have a really good estimate for completion. Too much depends on third parties. It isn’t going to be soon by any meaningful use of the word ‘soon’."

So, the game is definitely, really and truly coming to PC. Yay! And it sounds like it's going to take a little while. Boo!

Between this and the upcoming standalone version of DayZ, PC gamers are gonna have are going to have more than enough zombie games to play. Wait, what am I talking about? There's no such thing as "enough" zombie games.

Finally got my hands on it!

Man, I'm not too far in (I don't think) and I'm not sure I'm doing a very good job, but holy crap this game can be tense! I wasn't expecting it to be so...panic inducing. Trying to get a car door open and tear ass out of somewhere is scary as hell.

Agreed. I think this is the closest a game has come to making you feel like you are in the zombie apocolypse. I was out looking for supplies and while i was in the house i noticed a horde was headed right towards me. So i just stopped everything i was doing, went to the window and just watched as they walked past. I thought that was so cool.

Yeah! I'd agree on it being the closest to what we imagine as 'the real thing'. Going out at night is terrifying. I tried to do some last minute scavenging as the sun went down, crept up close to a nearby house, saw it was full of zombies and turned the hell around to go home.

Not quite up to speed on the whole managing/scavenging business just yet, but I figure that's something that will become clearer over time. Mostly I've just done a few of the early missions, so I'll probably look into scavenging a lot more when I play next. The impression I get is that you can't get very far without scavenging, and the church fences really need more barbed wire.

Yea thats how i went about it. Kind of just learned as i went along. Basically you just need set items to run your compound. Anytime you are out scavenging and come across those items you can carry in a ruck sack, do so.

What does it mean when some of your survivors are missing? How do i get them back?

I haven't had anyone go missing yet...I assume it means they're boned.

I noticed when you have a ruck sack on, it gives you the option to drop it. Why would you need to drop it? Does it slow you down? Unless there's some disadvantage to having it on, I can't imagine why you'd want to drop it before returning home.

It drains your stamina really fast if you sprint with a rucksack. I've never dropped one though.

I heard you can drop the sack onto flatbed trucks in order to bring multiple sacks back. I haven't tried it yet but that seems like it could make scrounging much more efficient.

Oh man thatd be so damn awesome. I havent seen a flat bed truck tho, just the standard ones.

Bah, I'm an idiot, I meant the blue pickup.

Oh well bad ass.

Any more solid word on if co-op could be added to this game? I actually dont see how theyd do it, considering that resources are such a vital part of the game, unless they allowed the co op partner to have stuff they find transfer to their game. I also think theyd have to increase the horde size as i assume two players could take down a horde fairly easily.

I think I remember reading that a sandbox mode was going to be added just for messing about.

I would definitely like co-op but I'd love to see some kind of extreme survival mode to go along with it that made things that much harder to account for the increase in manpower.

I am playing this right now, and it is either really hard or I am just terrible at it (much more likely).

The 8 people I have, who have yet to improve the first house you get (the church) beyond boarded up windows and a sniper are all going hungry, most are tired and the over moral is fear. There are at least 3 major infestations very close by and Maya, who seems to be the most capable person I have so far, is stuck on a cellphone tower with two hoards below and the infestation she was supposed to clear out. She's low on ammo to boot.

BUT...it's still a butt load of fun. The struggle for survival, the fear and worry and low moral and lack of food and weapons really hammers home the whole 'zombie apocalypse' feel. In most open world games you can usually find some cheap way out, or at the very least just run away. This...this I am truly boned.

Lol, that's life in the zombie apocalypse man.

You need to make improvements to ur base or relocate. Go into the notebook and scroll to the layout of your compound and make upgrades there. You'll prob need building materials and certain levels of influence. Which u can get by going on scavenging runs. Same goes for food, ammo and gas. Have Lilly locate areas that have these items and go on a supply run

Good news! Things have improved marginally, but I'm feeling more confident now. Maya sadly committed suicide, leaping from the cellphone tower and subsequently being torn apart by the zombies below. Desperate after her death, another survivor (the guy you start as, whose name escapes me) went on a run to a town in the north and managed to find some materials. After that searched a nearby store and gas station.

So I have a workshop now and enough food for the next three days. Moral is still pretty low, one person's hurt and the infestations and hoards are very much a dangerous issue, but at least we're not starving anymore. Onward and upward!

So, has the second update gone live yet? I haven't played in a little over a week, waiting for it. Hopefully, to avoid any of the glitches that I'm worried about. Like one of playable survivors going missing.

And just out of curiosity, have any of you guys found a survivor with a cowboy hat? There was a guy with a cowboy hat in the launch trailer, but I have no idea if that's just a randomly generated one or is someone you run across in the main line story.

Yea i did, i believe hes just a fellow neighbor and survivor, no one playable i dont believe.

Yeah, Doc Hanson is the only I've seen with a cowboy hat too. But, the dude in the trailer looked younger than him. And seemed like he was playable, atleast in the trailer.

I have heard that most of the survivors are randomly generated, so I'm starting to think finding a playable survivor with a cowboy hat is just one of those randomly generated things I've yet to come across.

I got that guy in my group, but I had to keep asking Lilly to find me people before he popped up and it was after I had relocated my base.

Really?

Then, I shall do the same until he appears. If I'm going to **** my pants in the Zombie Apocalypse, I want to do it with a cowboy hat on.
