Stephen King's Epic "The Dark Tower" - Part 1

Yep. "Watered-down" is a great way to sum up John Carter's problems. Well, that and the fact that Taylor Kitsch SUCKED in the lead role.

/waits for someone to appear and tell me why John Carter was a misunderstood masterpiece because FILM CRITIC HULK liked it, as if that means dick.

Who's film critic hulk?

I think this one might see Roland with his horn. King posted something to his facebook page implying as much. It went on about how the Tower draws near and the Crimson King awaits. There was a picture of the Horn of Eld beneath it.

Stephen King potentially offers major clue about The Dark Tower movie

WARNING: Spoilers for The Dark Tower book series below.

Stephen King’s Dark Tower book series spanned seven novels over the course of 22 years, following the journey of Roland Deschain on his journey to the titular location.
It takes The Gunslinger a long time to finally reach the tower and when he does, he’s confronted with a startling realization: He’s done it all before. Roland has made the trip to the tower countless times, but every time his journey is different and every time he returns his journey resets. As the book closes, Roland finds himself back at the start of the pages of the first novel, though this time he has something in his possession that he didn’t have the first time around: the Horn of Eld. Once he realizes he has it in his possession, the voice of Gan tells Roland, “This is your promise that things may be different, Roland – that there may yet be rest. Even salvation.”
Building off of all that, King took to Twitter early this morning and posted a cryptic message and photo.

Could King be implying that the events of the upcoming The Dark Tower movie will in fact continue where the books left off? Showing us a different version of Roland’s cycle playing out? Perhaps the version where things work in his favor?
The film’s director Nikolaj Arcel and King have previously said that the film would be different from the books, and perhaps they were winking at us this whole time: the movie is both an adaptation and a sequel to the series. This all remains to be seen however, and likely won’t be confirmed for some time if it’s true, but sound off with your own thoughts on our theory below!
The Dark Tower movie is currently in production in South Africa and will feature Idris Elba as Roland Deschain (The Gunslinger), Matthew McConaughey as Randall Flagg (The Man in Black), Abbey Lee as the film’s female lead, Tirana, Tom Taylor as young Jake Chambers and Fran Kranz as Pimli, the right hand man of Flagg. It is scheduled for release on February 17, 2017.

I would tag it, eek - but that's exactly what I was talking about.

Man that's a big spoiler…cover this!

It says warning spoilers right at the top, in bold.

Anyway, I figured as much, hopefully the characters still stay true to themselves.

That'd be an, interesting way to go. It could be really cool, or really bad (depending on how they do it). And it would seem to explain some of the changes that are clearly being made.

This is officially good news.

I am an avid fan and a passionate advocate of the first four books in the cycle, but find the latter three to be disappointing due to things like [BLACKOUT]King inserting himself into the story in a rather cack-handed manner, that whole hide tanning section we coul dhave done without, the Harry Potter, Marvel and Star wars references - and the ending with The Crimson 'EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE' King. God bloody awful. I didn't like the wrap around ending at the time either, but have softened a lot on it over the years and kinda dig it now.[/BLACKOUT]

I hope that this new live action version will fix some of those problems.

I also have a man crush on Idris Elba.

My take on something in your tags

I believe that the Crimson King's degenerate state is meant to reflect the unfortunate end of someone with an obsession like Roland's. Similarly, in Mordred I saw much of the Roland we met at the beginning of the quest. I felt it was fitting that something like Mordred was the Beast that guarded the Tower. I don't think there's room in this quest for King to make an appearance. If it is only three movies, then we have to at least cover the Wolves, the attack on Devar-Toi, and the last leg of the quest through End-World.

If we're looking at the movies in terms of big set pieces, I see it shaking down like this:

Movie 1 - ??? Something akin to Lud, maybe, if the movie starts in the middle of things like King said.
Movie 2 - The Wolves
Movie 3 - Devar-Toi

Have spoiler tagged everything in case anyone hasn't read books:

Agreed on Crimson King's degeneration, I just wish King had done it in a better manner. All I picture CK as at the end there is a cross between an anorexic Santa Claus and Rincewind.
I do hope Flagg gets a better send off as well. It'll be interesting to see if we still get a Stand remake at some point. Stephen King was doing shared universes long, long before anybody else!
I will be so sad if the first two books are glossed over :( I want my 'go then, there are other worlds than these' and the parlay with the man in black, and the doors on the beach etc. etc.
I'm not sure how the hell you start in Lud without spending time explaining the drawing of the three. They'll have to do it flashback if nothing else.
I really hope they get Blaine right!

I'm not sure I buy this whole last time around thang. So unless you're read the books, you won't know what's come before or are there going to be flash blacks ad nauseam? I need more info

The books didn't have any flashbacks, except to tell us about Roland's training, his encounters in Mejis, and the Priest's Tale. I wouldn't expect the movie to burden itself with too many flashbacks.

Or they just bring up the whole "Roland has done this before" thing in dialogue, ala Star Wars.

If this is meant to be a sequel, does that mean the cycle turned Roland black?

FilmCritHulk is actually extremely critical of John Carter on a basic story telling level so I'm not even sure what the hell you're talking about. He wrote thousands of words about how it's a mess of a movie.

Film Critic Hulk can sometimes have great articles.

Hulk recently wrote an interesting article about Civil War. I don't agree with him so much, but he definitely at least brings up valid points from a different perspective.

Actually he wrote a piece on how problematic the script for that film is. I think it's one of his best articles.
