(Sigh)

Why do I get the feeling that this is going to turn out like a really grim version of the Smurfs movie?

Yeah, but look at how hot their Gargamel is tho. :o

I'll obviously wait to see the movie, but I think Idris Elba is one of the most unexpectedly awesome casting decisions for a big time character since Heath as the Joker.

As for the Man in Black's costume design, it depends in what way he appears this way. Does seem a bit flamboyant for most of the circumstances we see him in the books, but it could totally work in the right context.

They are posting pictures of the mansion from The Wastelands online. Apparently Jake shows up in MidWorld for the first time through the mansion instead of being killed by Jack Mort.

That doesn't make sense though,
since the set pics of Roland and Jake together on the NYC streets show Jake walking and suddenly see Roland standing in fron of him and he jumps forward and hugs him, in such a way it seems he has missed him

Here are some very interesting news. On July 22 Beryl Evans will attend Comic Con and sign her book Charlie the Cho Cho.

Evans who? You might ask.

Well, Beryl Evans is a fictional author from The Dark Tower who wrote the book Charlie the Cho Cho and now she is at Comic Con signing her book.

What does this mean?

Well, that is hard to say but I would guess that there will be some kind of Dark Tower event at Comic Con this year. Exactly what we don’t know yet though.

Beryl Evans is the name of the author who wrote Charlie the Choo-Choo. In Wolves of the Calla, Beryl Evans' name is changed to Claudia y Inez Bachman when Eddie Dean and Jake Chambers go todash and visit The Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind.

Sounds like "The Wastelands" is the one really being developed here.

From everything I've read, it sounds like the story is more of a sequel to the original series than an actual adaptation. Maybe that's a good call, I don't know. It may be a difficult story to truly adapt to film. But I feel like, if you're going to do The Dark Tower, either do it the right way or don't do it at all. I don't see a reason to craft a new story using some of the characters (and apparently leaving other important ones out) unless you don't have enough confidence in yourself to do the real story justice. And if that's the case, you shouldn't be the one making the movie.

Exactly, I have seen a few web sites say this is a sequel to the books because in set pictures Roland has [BLACKOUT]the horn eld, which he got at the end of the last book when he started his journey again[/BLACKOUT].

Personally, I think that's a ridiculous way to do the movie, how the hell are people who haven't read the books supposed to know what is going on? As you say, adapt the books right, or don't adapt them at all. This is a ridiculous approach IMO.

Yeah, it's just dumb. I understand this kind of approach when it's a story people already know really well (Tim Burton did this with his Alice movie and from what I understand, this is how the new Tarzan movie was done). But only people who have read TDT know the story. It just feels like they didn't know how to make a real adaptation work, but, lucky for them, King ended the story in such a way that they could say their half-baked adaptation is actually a sequel to the books. Feels like a massive cop out.

Definitely, I only finished the last book this year, and so my excitement for the movie went up, it's right back down again after seeing what they are doing. I think they are doing it not to upset fans, but I think this will do it more than an adaptation of the books would.

Yeah. I mean, IMO, Eddie and Susannah are just important as Roland. I wasn't really into the story until they showed up. To not even have them there is just... Wrong. Now, I know one could argue that if this was a faithful adaptation, they wouldn't show up until the second movie anyway, but it isn't, so we may never see them. Especially since they're making background characters into lead characters.

If Eddie and Susannah aren't in the film and they don't have a good reason for not being there, I simply won't watch the film.

Yep, if this flops we may not see such great moments as Roland and Eddie meeting, or Roland 'curing' and creating Susannah, it's a joke really, I have lost pretty much all interest in this.

Yeah, the way Roland helps Odetta/Detta and creates Susannah is one of the most powerful moments in the entire series. It's absolutely amazing and it sucks that we may never get that in a movie. And even if we do, it likely won't feel the same because a big part of that story consists of Roland exploring New York through the eyes of another person. But if we get to that point, it will be after Roland has already visited New York as himself, apparently.

Did I miss something? Are Eddie and Susannah in this movie?

Its a shame to not see Susannah in the movie as it would have given a black actress a chance to be in a major franchise movie, in which we have had very few.

I was really looking forward to Roland's fish out of water scenes, like his astonishment when he tries to buy ammo for his gun.

Exactly, seeing that play out on the big screen would have awesome, now we won't get anything anywhere near as good, they probably already know each other in this version :whatever:.

One thing is for sure, if they turn Susannah white, there's going to be outrage as there are many black actresses who would love to have a significant role in a major film franchise as this one could be. There are I think only four black actresses in major franchises right now: Zoe Saldana, Lupita Nyong'o (although she's playing an alien and is CGI), Naomie Harris and coming soon Tessa Thompson. Susannah could be great for someone who is need of a career boost, like Megan Good or someone on the rise like Gugu Mbatha Raw or Teyonah Parris.

No way they cast a white actress as Susannah, no way.

I remember back when Ron Howard was on the project there was a rumor that Jennifer Carpenter was being considered for Susannah. I have no idea if that was true though.

One thing that did bother me about that version though was how, in the concept art, they showed Susannah walking. All things considered though, that version still seemed to be closer to the source material than whatever the hell we're getting.

To be fair that could have been a Detta Walker scene before Mort pushes her.

No, it was a group shot of Roland, Eddie, Jake and Susannah. I think it was either when they reached Lud or the Dogan.
