Stephen King's Epic "The Dark Tower" - Part 1

Quite a cool poster. Would have loved more inclusion of a Western feel, as the entire series of books have that tone, but I guess the movie is going for something different. Very striking nonetheless.

They are probably low men/can-toi. You can see one across the street from Walter, all wrapped up in black with sallow skin.

Agreed, they have that rubbery face-mask look.

I think if they'd gone with a western feel, unless they went really out there, it might have come off as a bit generic. Not that this isn't somewhat, but you can it's going to be a different kind of movie.

Yeah I understand, it may have ended up looking like an actual Western - which it isn't.

I'm looking forward to seeing the trailer to try and gauge better what kind of tone they are going with exactly.

Maybe they're trying to avoid having too much of a western feel for the simple reason western-movies aren't that popular nowadays. Which might be also why they didn't go with a straight adaptation of the first novel. If I remember it correctly the first book was the one with the strongest western feel to it. That and perhaps the flashback part of the fourth novel about the young Roland.

Is the first one really super western? Its starts like that, but quickly makes it clear it isn't. It would be like calling Star Wars a western, if you removed everything that clearly made it sci-fi as well.

Tonally, it very much is. It has a ton of Western elements.

But they're not selling just The Gunslinger here, which is a much smaller storyline than it eventually becomes...they're selling The Dark Tower, and the concept of the universe itself.

I suspect that's the reason they drew from more books than just The Gunslinger for the first film. They want people to buy into the broader concept early on.

The Gunslinger is the Dark Tower, its is where the concept of the universe is introduced. But even still, Westworld has proven that Western sci-fi, if good, totally in.

I suspect they decided to make their own adaptation because they think it will sell better. I don't know, but this feels too much like messing with something that was pretty perfect to be begin with. Adapting the first 3 books almost whole-cloth would result in something rather great imo.

For me, this is starting to feel like how for years the idea of adapting the LotR was to not adapt the LotR. It was to make it some mishmash of the 3 (6) books, as opposed to something that represented the general structure of the books. 2 movies instead of 3, shorter movies, etc.

I think this movie is supposed to be set in the same continuity as the books but it takes place after the last book in the series.

I know. And that just... yeah. There is a lot of having your cake and eating it as well with that concept.

Agreed, it's a stupid concept to me also. I really enjoyed the books, but am not looking forward to this movie adaptation at all. A trailer may change that, but they have already changed too much for me.

Personal preference here, but I thought the Western 'feel' of the books was intrinsic to the character of the gunslinger, and the success of the story overall. He represented a character type we all identify with; the strong, noble, skilled and deadly gunslinger as seen in many classic Westerns, and often made iconic by the likes of Clint Eastwood. Cliched it may be, but I always felt his integrity, values, style and even dress sense - dropped into a universe of parallel worlds, strange creatures and a huge quest - were what made the books unique and quite memorable. And when he is transported to modern day Earth, he stands out like a sore thumb.

He is simultaneously a caricature of an old and ancient world - where good and evil are very simple black and white concepts - but also a symbol of goodness that people in the modern world would aspire to be, muddled as we are by all the grey areas we face nowadays.

If they lose that Western feel and make this a more modern telling, I think some of the magic of the original story will be lost in that translation. But I'll reserve judgement till I see it.

100% agree with this.

I'd have been thrilled to watch Viggo Mortensen playing Roland. Nevertheless, eagerly looking forward to watch it on screen. Loved the poster, which King shared on his Twitter recently.

Can't say I'm thrilled with Flagg's look. Isn't he supposed to have long hair, or is that just in The Stand?

I prefer they go with a hairstyle that fits the actor. Short hair works better on Matt. His long hair through the years has ranged from

"Surfer Dude"

"L'oréal"

"BFE Trailer Park Dude"

I guess they could have went with a surfer dude style dyed black, but I think for this character in the visual medium played by Mathew its better that they gave him short hair.

They just showed the trailer and 5 minutes of the Dark Tower at CinemaCon, hopefully this means we will get a trailer soon.

They did have a trailer leak last year. Wonder if its the same one.

I dunno I think it may be different. Just a feeling but we shall see. Would be nice to see 5 minutes of the film too.

Been looking at some reactions on Twitter, and a lot of them appear to be mixed at best. Still planning on seeing the film, though!

Yeah I expect it to be the same trailer just with the sfx now completed

Or not?

Now word on when The Dark Tower trailer hits online. There were still some unfinished effects in there, so may be a short wait.

This movie... I dunno. I have never been more conflicted about a film. I really like the actors involved in other projects, but I hate the idea of them being involved here. I hope its good, but I think it will be garbage. Staying off the hype train on this one.
