Stephen King's Epic "The Dark Tower" - Part 2

This looks way more generic than I was expecting.

..and they'll explain all of those liberties away with the excuse that Roland carries the horn of eld this time around. Which, is both very clever, and total ********, at the same exact time.

...mind you, there's an awful lot about The Dark Tower storyline that needs changing for the movies, because some of it is just plain terrible. The self indulgent meta-wank Stephen King puts into the story rightly needs to be excised. The entire climax needs changing (no, not that bit... I mean everything that comes before it: "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"/ The sneetches / Patrick and his magic eraser... all just terrible). I'd be quite happy if they cut the character of Mordred completely, not least because of the way he dispatches a certain character like a little *****. Bloody 19 everywhere, to the point where it loses all meaning and just becomes an irritant...

I'm not keen on the way they've approached this from what I've seen in the trailer, but if they eventually get a chance to rectify all of those poor creative choices, then I'll think very highly of the film-makers.

Oh wow so he's got the horn this time! That's intriguing. Although I bet this time he forgot his wallet or something lol

Love the shot of the Overlook Hotel.

I'll be honest, little Easter egg sh** like this just makes me roll my eyes. It's like Sony is saying, "LOOGIT! Yeah we're butchering the source material but we have a picture of the hotel from the Shining and a sign that says Pennywise so it shows we care about the fans!" Never mind that while The Dark Tower has ties to a lot of King's other works, those two books aren't referenced in the series, if I recall. Well, maybe the turtle thing from It counts. But regardless, this just feels like a cheap wink to the audience in an attempt to win over some fans. It reminds me of that hamfisted line in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen when Sean Connery says something like, "Can you believe Phinneas Fogg? Around the world! In 80 days!" Cue eye roll.

Whats the 19 thing?

Ugh. It's part of the Stephen King meta-wankfest that infects the latter three books. He was 19 when he started writing the first book, he was run over and nearly killed in 1999 on June 19th. So he decided to weave it into the books, [BLACKOUT]because he becomes a character in the books himself[/BLACKOUT].

just curious, but did the books feature the modern "real" world ( with the characters going back and forth ) as shown in the trailer?

I'll be honest, the 19 stuff never bothered me, and I didn't even mind [BLACKOUT]King appearing in the novels himself, because he at least had the good sense to make fun of himself. Although I could certainly do without the Snitches from Harry Potter and the Doombots on horseback.[/BLACKOUT]

Still, all of that will probably end up being WAY better than this generic looking crap.

[BLACKOUT]Most of book 2 happens in New York.[/BLACKOUT]

Maybe for him, there were were meatier themes in the Dark Tower.

Well the Man in Black and the Dark Tower series certainly offers more to chew on than anything an MCU film can offer. And the Dark Tower is much more interesting than the MCU. So I undestand completely why he chose the Dark Tower series and the MIB character over GOTG 2 and the MCU. Unfortunately it seems a lot of quality was lost in the adaption process.

I'll take your word for it. I'm not familiar with the books at all but that trailer made this look like a colossal turd. Sony's marketing is all kinds of terrible so maybe the movie has a chance and they just botched this first look, but I doubt it.

So McConaughey passed on Guardians 2 for this?
you think he made the choice based on watching the trailer? :cwink:

He did it based on reading the script(not every actor understands and knows how to read a script and imagine what the movie would be like) and meetings.

Hard to imagine him reading for anyone other than Ego, but also equally hard to imagine anyone but Kurt nailing the part.

This has generic watered down CW-level Divergent/Mortal Instruments written all over it. It looks cheap.

Yep. Which is exactly why I don't understand the argument that if it looked more like a Western it would be considered generic. This looks about as generic as you can get now.

Yeah. Weird West is as about as far from generic western as you can get.

Do we even know he's carrying the horn or is it mere speculation at this point?

There's been some pretty major hints in the marketing and tweets put out. To the point that I would be very surprised if it wasn't in his possession.

To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if they forgot to include it at all but still passed off all the differences between this and the novels as it being a sequel.

But that being said, I believe there were some set photos that showed him carrying it.
