Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One" - Part 1

That climax battle is the stuff of dreams for fanboys everywhere! As a newer gen Gundam fan, I was never really into the OG Mobile Suit Gundam series (too oldschool for me), with my fav being series being Gundam 00, but this made me want to pick up a PG RX-78-2.

For all you folks who are now Olivia Cooke fans, check out Thoroughbreds. While not amazing, it is a very sharp and clever little pseudo-thriller that came out I want to say in February. Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl is also excellent, mind you she mostly plays (dying) manic pixie dream girl in that.

It's okay,I have now seen her 'best bits' through the magic of the Internet :cwink:.

Wtf?? Ya'll are openly posting the surprise cameos !!!!!!!!! Don't spoil the movie for those who haven't seen it yet. :cmad: :argh:

The whole Iron Giant, [BLACKOUT]Mechagodzilla & Gundam[/BLACKOUT] fight sequence is fangasm overload. It absolutely blew my mind.

.

There's still plenty.

Possible plot hole

Are there no safe zones in the Oasis? IOI just showed up at the dance club and started shooting everyone. If they could do that why wouldn't they just normally shoot all the gunters to cull the competition?

If this was still a few days after release, I'd get it but it's been out for almost two weeks. People who haven't seen it yet should know the risk when they come into the thread.

I think a thumb rule of at-least 2 weeks of posting spoilers under spoiler tags should be made mandatory. Since we don't have spoiler specific threads for non CBMs, we could try to hold off on posting plot points/cameos that were not shown in trailers/tv spots.

I could be wrong but

Aren't IOI using the players who are in debt and turning them into SIXERS?? So shouldn't IOI run the risk of running out of Sixers if they kill all the gamers/gunters.

Almost to 400m WW. Rather impressive.

Saw this the other day, it's a pretty fun spectacle movie. I never read the book, so I don't know how this compares. The plot and characters are rather thin, but the visual spectacle is pretty cool. I only saw this in 2D, but this would probably be worth seeing in 3D.

7.5/10

I saw it yesterday and I think it's a bit of a modern classic, it made me feel like Spielberg's movies did as a kid, it wasn't just the nostalgia factor, but the whole adventure vibe of it felt like the modern day equivelant of the movies I grew up on, while being completely relevant to the present and a really immersive slice of sci fi with some clever concepts within it's premise, I loved it.

It's crying out for some Blu Ray pause button action. :D

I am really hoping to see this soon ASAP. Dying to see it. Just been so busy with work. Maybe this weekend.

I kind of agree. I don't love it as much as his best films or some of the best '80s adventures it evokes (BTTF for example). But it is really good. I guess time will tell whether kids today growing up loving it as much as I grew up loving, say, Jurassic Park or Indiana Jones. But I hope so, because it has some of that old school wonder that has really died out in modern blockbusters.

The Liberty Island race alone deserves a vfx award.

If I ever talked to Spielberg, I'd want to know what he knew about Gundam before he made Ready Player One :D

Yeah same, its deeper than people give it credit for as well as it has some interesting things to say about modern society with people interacting more online instead of the real world.

Well,if it's any indication, both of my nephew's proclaimed it their new favourite movie ever upon walking out of the cinema after seeing it. They are 7 and 10.

On the other end of the spectrum in my showing I saw an elderly couple walk out about 30 mins in and not come back. And my Dad and Aunty found it hard to follow, but neither has ever played a video game in their life, so I think that was a huge factor.

I think unless you are a big movie and game fan though half of the cameos, etc would go over your head. I was the only one to notice Artemis using the pulse rifle from Aliens in the movie out of my group for example.

Saw it, liked it. I wasn't floored by anything, but I wasn't expecting it to be. I loved seeing the Ninja Turtles, but all the pop nostalgia felt gratuitous, and I may have been a bit overstimulated. The message, which kind of got spoiled for me, that it's not about nostalgia kind of left me feeling like all the nostalgia was a sideshow, though I couldn't help but get excited about the Ninja Turtles, even Bay's crazy designs.

The thing that really struck me was that this is a movie that only Spielberg could have made. There's a lot of easter eggs that could only happen from a personal call from Stephen Spielberg. And there's a cynicism that should pervade 80s references that only a legit 80s director can sidestep while still reveling fully in stuff like Gundam vs Mechagodzilla.

Funny enough, this was the kind of movie that really would have benefited from going in cold, the way we did for 80s movies in their home decade. If this movie had been allowed to be surprising, I'm sure I would have loved it.

That said, I'd love to see more of I-Rok, or characters like I-Rok.

hoping to see this with my brother in a few days with his work schedule and mine we have been wanting to see it together as we are both big Spielberg fans.

In honour of the decade! :woot:

That will be interesting to see, although I don't think it has had the impact in popularity or box office of the likes of 'Back to the Future' and 'Jurassic Park', but I can see it growing further on Blu Ray.

Yeah, like the ending which showed Olivia Cooke on your lap in the real world >>> Videogames. :D
