Steven Spielberg's "Ready Player One" - Part 1

Love the movie. Enjoyed the book. Nuff said.

Also, wanted to share this. I already knew with things like PS VR that the technology in Ready Player One, with the Oasis, wasn't out of the realms of reality. Well with this video, going to the Oasis, complete from the visor to the suit to even the track, might be closer into our grasps then we might've thought:

The thing with the visor is that you would also need noise canceling headphones to give you a complete submersible experience.

Watched this again on 4K, still a ton of fun and one I will be watching for years I think. Still haven’t caught all of the references, but caught a few more this time that I didn’t previously.

Also, Olivia Cooke :hmr:

Watched it last night. Nothing out of this world but a good fun film.

I know China has a big gaming community and they were a big part of why RPO overindexed (RPO also played way better in tier I & II cities than the suburbs which prevented the movie from breaking 250m) in the Middle Kingdom but I'm still stunned the CBO numbers.

It's WB's highest grossing movie in China by a long margin (RPO 220m >> K:SI 168m). I frankly didn't see that coming. It was a great surprise.

I definitely think being a gamer would help you enjoy this movie more. As a gamer and big movie fan, I thoroughly enjoy watching it.

BTDubz, I'm glad you loved RPO.

I'm not big on games so I most likely missed out on lots of cool nods. I also didn't get the references during the 2nd mission as I'm not a horror buff. :( :cmad: I plan on watching this again very soon. I re-watched PRU recently and while I still liked it, it wasn't as good as the first time when I watched it in a theater. I think this one will go in the reverse direction where I'll appreciate this even more 2nd time around.

Personally I enjoyed both more upon 2nd viewing at home.

So when is Ernest Cline's sequel book supposed to be released? And will WB greenlight the sequel once it is? I doubt Spielberg will return to direct, but I'm sure the cast is locked in for a sequel.

What's that?

Enjoy this more the more I watch it, it’s great trying to spot things you missed before.

Also, I am curious as to what Americans think of Olivia Cooke’s American accent. As I never would have guessed she was from Oldham in the north of England!

Some hide it better than others, she sounded decent enough. I think sometimes the letter r can be a giveaway with some, lol

Cool, thanks, I thought her accent was brilliant but I have thought that about others and then an American poster tells me otherwise :woot:.

It slipped at least once (“its being broadcast!” is in a straight up English accent) but otherwise I thought it sounded fine.

First thing I saw her in was Bates Motel and naturally thought she was American, it was only in the promo interviews for RPO when she spoke in a very 'Northern' accent I was 'OMG', to me, it's a brilliant accent, I would never have her down as British, nor least from Oldham :woot:

See, I thought that part sounded American :hehe:

Same, couldn’t believe when I looked her up after and found out she was from Oldham, never would have guessed.

I know exactly what you're talking about. It didn't sound English to me, but the way she said "broadcast" sounded too overly pronounced.

One thing I found odd was never seeing TJ Miller’s real world character. I thought there would be a joke cutting to a very timid guy or something.

Now, does anyone know if it was always intended to keep his character a mystery or that they might have cut a shot showing him in the real world because of all the bad stuff that came out about TJ Miller leading up to the film’s release?

Yeah it definitely didn’t sound English to me, but I agree it was over pronounced.

I think it was just to keep some mystery about the character. Didn’t this come out before all of Miller’s problems?

It came out after Miller's sexual abuse allegations but before he was arrested on an Amtrak train. That's probably why he was MIA from promoting the film when it was released. He was still present at SDCC last summer when they had the panel for Ready Player One. I feel like we would have known by now if Miller had a live action role in the film that was cut due to his offscreen mishaps. I still think it was a missed opportunity to show his character in the real world after his Oasis character gets killed just screaming about it in his mom's basement or something.

Ready Player One did not hold up as well as I thought it would. I actually thought it'll get better but I just didn't get the same feeling I had after the first time. The movie was still cool but I genuinely geeked out seeing Mechagodzilla, Gundam and Iron Giant duke it out during the last mission and Iron Giant's sacrifice got me right in the feels but none of that happened 2nd time around.

I think they should've gone with more popular characters in the insane third act of the film.
