Steven Spielberg's West Side Story adaptation

If he had been the one to direct Les Mis, yes, I would agree with the assessment that he had an Oscar win in mind. But West Side Story? I don't see lightning striking twice with that story. It might have been Oscar-worthy in 1961, but these days, I'm not so sure...

If they gave Maria AIDS and made Tony a persecuted Jew during World War II, maybe. :o

It's gonna get nominated on the fact that its West Side Story and Spielberg.

Even if its just.... good, not great, it'll get a nomination.

It would have to be complete **** or popular shlock for the Academy not to recognize it with a nomination.

Eh, technically he already did this with the Goodfeathers.

I think the fact that West Side story is an adaptation of a play, that was a reimagining of Shakspere transformed into a musical, kinda makes anger over a remake pointless.

Exactly

I'd like to point out that 4 of the top 5 threads in the Misc. Films forum right now are musicals. Pretty cool.

I don't know why I'm using this gif in particular, but it feels right.

You two are bullies. I am getting a mod. :waa:

Yeah, there was Man of La Mancha version starring Peter O'Toole that was a resounding flop.

There is that question though, why not remake a musical that didn't get a decent treatment the first time around but would still make good movies if done right? Like MoLM, or Camelot...

As for WSS, I wonder if it got made, if Spielberg would keep the song order we're used to in the movie version, or put the songs in the same order they are on stage? On stage, 'Gee Officer Krupke' comes right after the fatal rumble, but in the movie it happens before the rumble (which makes a lot more sense).

A Spielberg remake of a film based on a play based on Shakespeare... seems unnecessary but whatever. Maybe if it happens it'll actually be good.

If Spielberg wants to remake something whose going to actually tell him no? The only people that think he's lost his flair are extreme nerds. Everyone else still loves his work.

The mix of material and director sounds great to me. I'm a huge fan of the Wise film but would be interested in seeing what the master could do taking a whack at this. And I just want to say let's remember something... WSS was a movie, based on a play based on a classic by Shakespeare.
