Funny thing to me though, Is some think Ryu is the best(and to an extent it's true if you consider his Dark Powers) but Ken beat Ryu at the end of Street Fighter Alpha 2 AND he beat him in Street Fighter 2. Ken said he wouldnt marry Eliza unless he beat Ryu...guess what he married Eliza. So foregone conclusion, Ken beat Ryu. lol

Just thought I'd bring that up since it's partially me being biased towards Ken since childhood.

Ken has always concerned himself with being as good if not better than Ryu. That's the standard he set for himself and I was never surprised when he beat Ryu at all.

Ryu is about constantly improving and looking for bigger and stronger challenges.

"A perfect warrior does not grow."

Satsui no Hado seduced him the moment he cldn't bear to lose a fight which is what led to the Metsu Shoryuken that almost killed Sagat.

Ryu never feels he's good enough. He always wants to be better. If Ken hadn't beat him, Ryu would probably stay stagnant. It's that drive which spurs him and his restless fighting spirit.

He's the archetypal stoic wandering warrior.

Which is an excellent point, sometimes I wish popular perception reflected that because it emphasizes the importance those two play in each other's lives and makes Ryu and Ken settling the score in Street Fighter 4 and 3rd Strike mean that much more...If only the latter wasn't focused on lame ass Alex lol.

The canon is pretty clear as far as Ryu and Ken are concerned. They are eternal rivals to the end. They are the foundation of the franchise, integral pillars of the fighting game genre.

Of course people will always have their favourites and Ryu has pretty much solidified his status as an icon with his healthy staple of appearances in games over the years.

So when you mention Street fighter, most will more likely immediately see the image of Ryu in their minds.
