Student Draws Controversy with American Flags

That's alright with me

Yuck...

It's an American tragedy nonetheless. Those who say they would step on the flag are those who take this country for granted, think everything they're blessed with is free....and would sell us all out when the going gets tough.

That's kinda a ******ed thing to say because that's not taking the country for granted.

Also try and do that in another country and see what happens.

I don't think Vietnam veterans should have any say in such matters. But a flag should not be walked on,it's one thing to put the flag on the ground. It's another thing to see someone walk on it. The original post said that 5% of people walked on the flag, there's your issue.

I really don't get what the big deal about the flag is. It's a piece of cloth, nothing more, nothing less. People never fought or died for it. They fought and died for the principals of the country, not a piece of cloth that had it's stitching done in Taiwan. And I bet these people getting upset are the same ones who buy flags and then leave them outside to get torn up and tattered...you know, f**king hypocrites.

Agreed.

Flags on the floor. How very interesting and thought-provoking! Apparently, the vast majority of the participants avoided stepping on the flags. Imagine that! This slacker deserves some kind of award, for sparking such interesting discussions!

Personal Question: Would you have walked on the flag on September 12th, 2001?

Would you have taken a bunch of flags and slapped them all over the dirty-ass floor like the ****in' ignorant America-shaming twit that this girl is?

THE ****ING US FLAG CODE said:
§176. Respect for flag
(b) The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise.
(c) The flag should never be carried flat or horizontally, but always aloft and free.

Good mercy. This **** is patriotic the same way megachurches are Christian.

Why shouldn't Vietnam vets have a say in these matters? Are you implying they're all evil because they invaded Vietnam and some of them turned into monsters? I hope you know most of them were there against their will, because the government forced them to fight through the draft.

The American Flag is a symbol that represents many of the institutions and ideals of this country. Intentionally stepping on the flag is directly showing disrespect for this country whose rights, liberties, freedoms, and opportunities you take for granted. Those are opportunities seldom available outside this country and showing a bit of appreciation to those who fought and cherish this country.

Although disrespectful, there shouldn't be any legal boundaries with destroying or doing something with the flag. I don't condone it, but still.

Its a "piece of cloth" that represents many of the institutions that are paramount and respected in this country. What do you guys know about that.

I wonder what you guys would feel if someone walked around with a nazi flag on their truck and paraded it in front of your lawn......would it "just be a piece of cloth" then? hmmm..nothing to worry about here...:whatever:

Of if someone walked around with a traffic cone on their head and put a white blanket over it...would it just "be a costume,...piece of fabric" then..

or if someone took a picture of you, made hundreds of copies with an red X on top of it and plastered it around your school.......would it just be some "sheets of photogenic material"...

of if someone took a picture of your mother and drew some imagery around it and plastered it around school.....its "just a drawing" right...you'd be ok with it....

do you guys understand symbols and what they mean? You do know how they can express ideas, imagery and concepts? And do you understand by walking on the flag, you're disrespecting the country, at best showing indifference to this country? sigh*...

And do you understand that "disrespecting the country" or "showing indifference to this country" is not illegal?

It depends upon whether or not the terrorizers were chasing me. That would be some tough decision-i-matin' there.

:wow: Really?....Please display a post where I said it was illegal....

All I stated was there is significance to stepping on the flag, that you are conveying a message. I never stated anywhere you don't have a right to send others that message.

Nope, I respect the Flag. I know its a piece of cloth, but it's represents freedom and democracy and the will to strive and struggle to become better. It Represents the blood of thoose that fought for Liberty. It is an interesting debate, I wouldn't have walked on it, and if I saw it I would pick them all up. But, that's what I would do.

Do you not understand things?

That's not disrespecting the country... if anything that is showing the real freedoms you have here. You CAN step on the flag and ruin it and everything... and then you would not be thrown in jail or killed...

:whatever:

I think the key thing here is the intent of her putting the flag down. I highly doubt she thought "AAAA f**k the flag I'm putting it on the ground." It wasn't meant to be disrespectful, but as a social experiment to see what people's reactions would be.

Want me to find some US speedo pics for you? :csad:

:oldrazz:

:cwink:

Yeah, desecrating the symbol of this country is not disrespecting the country. Not at all. :whatever: Just because you have a freedom which you take for granted to desecrate the symbol of the country that gives you that freedom does not mean you are showing any respect or appreciation for the consequences or sacrifices that came with giving you those freedoms. No one here is arguing that you should be thrown in jail for disrespecting the country. I agree First Amendment protects your right to desecrate the flag. What I have been saying all along is that symbols mean something, they stand for things, they impress an idea, a concept, a value system.....and desecrating the flag is representation of taking those American values, ideas concepts for granted.

Comprehende?:whatever:

Regardless of whether or not you agree with her choice to do this, she is getting people to discuss this, and debate this so for that I give her major props. That's a sign of a good art project, regardless of whether you like it or not it still makes you think. So in that respect I think she accomplished her goal.

I dont care if someone waves a nazi flag around, or wears a klan outfit. It's there right. And yes, I understand symbols. But as George Carlin so eloquently said, "I leave symbols to the symbol-minded." If there should be anything that we should be putting on a pedastal, it's the constitution. That really represents what the country stands for, not a piece of cloth with some pretty colors. And no, whatever I do to a flag, I'm NOT disrespecting a country, or showing indifference to it. I'm disrespecting what a stupid god damn idea a flag is in the first place. They should really just get rid of them, as they're pointless now that we dont use them to steal countries anymore.

They STAND for an idea... for something...

They actually AREN'T that idea. It is not taking advantage of those concepts because the flag isn't actually anything besides a symbol.

Plus, you mentioned the nazi flag and that means you probably didn't know that the swastika used to mean good luck. So that means the American flag doesn't just stand for those same values across the board because it is just a symbol and has no meaning in the first place except the ones you force onto it.
